Remove the CD or DVD drive. Remove the memory module(s). Remove the modem. Remove the Mini PCI card. Remove the keyboard. Remove the EMI shield. Remove the display assembly. Remove the palm rest. Remove the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. Remove the microprocessor. Remove the speakers. Remove the system board.
You have performed the steps in "Turning Off Your Computer" and "Before Working Inside Your Computer." YouhavereadthesafetyinformationinyourDellOwner's Manual. A component can be replaced by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.

The procedures in this document may require the following tools:

Shut down the operating system: a. b. Save and close any open files, exit any open programs, click the Start button, and then click Turn Off Computer. In the Turn off computer window, click Turn off.
The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process finishes. 2. Ensure that the computer and any attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices do not automatically turn off when you shut down your operating system, press and hold the power button for 4 seconds.
NOTICE: To avoid damaging the computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer.

Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched. Turn off your computer. If the computer is connected to a docking device (docked), undock it. See the documentation that came with your docking device for instructions.
NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug it from the network wall jack.

Disconnect any telephone or telecommunication lines from the computer. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets, and then press the power button to ground the system board.
NOTICE: To connect a network cable, first plug the cable into the network wall jack and then plug it into the computer.

Remove any installed PC Cards from the PC Card slot. Close the display and turn the computer upside down on a flat work surface.
NOTICE: To avoid damaging the system board, you must remove the main battery before you service the computer.

Slide and hold the battery-bay latch release on the bottom of the computer, and then remove the battery from the bay.

Computer Orientation
Screw Identification
When you are removing and replacing components, photocopy "Screw Identification" as a tool to lay out and keep track of the screws. The placemat provides the number of screws and their sizes.

Insert the BIOS update program floppy disk or CD, and turn on the computer.
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS. When the flash update is complete, the computer will automatically reboot. 3. 4. 5. 6. Press <F2> during POST to enter the system setup program. Press <Alt> and <F> to reset the computer defaults. Press <Esc>, select Save changes and reboot, and press <Enter> to save configuration changes. Remove the flash BIOS update program floppy disk or CD from the drive and restart the computer.
Microprocessor Module

Follow the instructions in "Before Working Inside Your Computer." Remove the keyboard. Remove the EMI shield. Remove the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly.
NOTICE: When removing the microprocessor module, pull the module straight up. Be careful not to bend the pins on the microprocessor module.

To loosen the ZIF socket, use a small, flat-blade screwdriver and rotate the ZIF-socket cam screw counterclockwise until it comes to the cam stop.
The ZIF-socket cam screw secures the microprocessor to the system board. Take note of the arrow on the ZIF-socket cam screw.

NOTICE: Ensure that the cam lock is in the fully open position before seating the microprocessor module. Seating the microprocessor module properly in the ZIF socket does not require force. NOTICE: A microprocessor module that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the microprocessor and ZIF socket. 1. Align the pin-1 corner of the microprocessor module so that it points to the triangle on the system board, and insert the microprocessor module into the ZIF socket.
When the microprocessor module is correctly seated, all four corners are aligned at the same height. If one or more corners of the module are higher than the others, the module is not seated correctly. NOTICE: Hold the microprocessor down while turning the cam screw to prevent intermittent contact between the cam screw and microprocessor.

Tighten the ZIF socket by turning the cam screw clockwise to secure the microprocessor module to the system board. Wipe the thermal grease off of the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly with a clean paper towel. Squeeze all of the contents of the thermal grease packet (provided with the kit) on to the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. Replace the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. Replace the EMI shield. Replace the keyboard. Update the BIOS using a flash BIOS update program CD.

Open the display assembly approximately 180 degrees, and support the display assembly so that it does not open past this position. Pull straight up on the pull-tab that is attached to the display-feed flex cable to disconnect the cable from the system board. Remove the two M2.5 x 5-mm screws from each hinge bracket.

Display Bezel

You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Follow the instructions in "Before Working Inside Your Computer." Remove the keyboard. Remove the display assembly. Use a plastic scribe to pry the two screw covers and three display bumpers out of the screw holes located on the front of the bezel. Remove the five M2.5 x 5-mm screws located on the front of the bezel.
NOTICE: Carefully separate the bezel from the top cover to avoid damage to the bezel.

Starting at the bottom of the display panel, use your fingers to separate the bezel from the top cover and lift the inside edge of the bezel away from the top cover.
Display Panel

Connect the top flex-cable connector to the display panel connector. Connect the bottom flex-cable connector to the inverter connector. Lay the display panel in the top cover. Route the display-feed flex cable so that it rests in the notch located in the bottom edge of the top cover. Replace the four M2 x 3-mm screws that secure the display panel to the top cover. Replace the display bezel.

Save the original packaging for storing or shipping the hard drive.
NOTICE: Use firm and even pressure to slide the drive into place. If you use excessive force, you may damage the connector.

Insert the drive into the bay, and push the hard drive until it is fully seated in the bay. Replace and tighten the two M2.5 x 5-mm screws. Use the Operating System CD to install the operating system for your computer. Use the Drivers and Utilities CD to install the drivers and utilities for your computer.

NOTICE: The keycaps on the keyboard are fragile, easily dislodged, and time-consuming to replace. Be careful when removing and handling the keyboard. 5. 6. 7. Lift the top of the keyboard out of the computer base, and pull the keyboard out at an angle (towards the display). Grasp the keyboard flex cable near the connector, and pull up on the flex cable to disconnect it from the interface connector on the system board. Remove the keyboard from the computer base.

Replace the four M2 x 3-mm keyboard screws. To replace the hinge cover, first insert the left side of the hinge cover into the notches. Snap down the hinge cover, and ensure that it is flush with the palm rest. Insert the four securing tabs on the keyboard into their respective slots in the palm rest, and lower the keyboard into the computer base.

Remove the keyboard. Remove the EMI shield. Remove the display assembly. Turn the computer over and remove the twelve M2.5 x 8-mm screws (not labeled). Remove the M2.5 x 4-mm screw from the battery bay.

Turn the computer back over and remove the two M2.5 x 5-mm screws from the top of the palm rest.

NOTICE: Carefully separate the palm rest from the base plastics to avoid damage to the palm rest.

Starting at the back center of the palm rest, use your fingers to separate the palm rest from the base plastics by lifting the inside edge of the palm rest.

NOTICE: Before you replace the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly, wipe the thermal grease off of the assembly with a clean paper towel. Squeeze all of the contents of the thermal grease packet (provided with the kit) on to the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. NOTICE: Before turning on the computer, replace all screws and ensure that no stray screws remain inside the computer. Failure to do so may result in damage to the computer. NOTE: After replacing the system board, enter the computer Service Tag sequence into the BIOS of the replacement system board. Replace the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. Replace the palm rest. Replace the display assembly. Replace the EMI shield. Replace the keyboard. Replace the Mini PCI card, modem, and memory module(s) that you removed from the old system board. Replace the CD or DVD drive. Replace the hard drive. Insert the battery into the battery bay. Connect the AC adapter to the computer and to an electrical outlet.

Turn on the computer. Insert the CD that accompanied the replacement system board into the appropriate drive, and turn on the computer. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Connect the fan power cable to the system board. Tighten the four captive screws, labeled "1" through "4," in consecutive order. Replace the EMI shield. Replace the keyboard.

Memory

Follow the instructions in "Before Working Inside Your Computer." Turn the computer over, loosen the captive screw (labeled "M") in the memory module cover, and lift the cover away from the computer.

Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot. Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45-degree angle, and rotate the module down until it clicks into place. If you do not feel the click, remove the module and reinstall it.

NOTICE: If the memory module cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer.

Insert the battery into the battery bay, or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical outlet. Turn on the computer.
As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information. To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer, click the Start button, click Help and Support, and then click Computer Information.
CD or DVD Drive

Modem

You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface. 1. 2. Follow the instructions in "Before Working Inside Your Computer." Turn the computer over, loosen the captive screw (labeled "C") in the modem/Mini PCI card cover, and lift the cover away from the computer.
1 captive screw 2 modem/Mini PCI card cover 3. 4. Remove the two M2 x 3-mm screws securing the modem to the system board, and set them aside. Pull straight up on the attached pull-tab to lift the modem out of its connector on the system board and disconnect the modem cable.

Align the modem with the screw holes, and press the modem into the connector on the system board. Install the two M2 x 3-mm screws to secure the modem to the system board.

Align the Mini PCI card with the connector at a 45-degree angle, and press the Mini PCI card into the connector until it clicks.
