Fjd$50 Million Development For Wyndham Denarau Island

In addressing the audience, Prime Minister Bainimarama made special mention of Wyndhams significant contribution to the Nadi community and Fijian economy since the resort was first developed in 2000. Today marks a landmark event for Fijis tourism industry, said Prime Minister Bainimarama. In 2000, Wyndham created one of the worlds premier resort destinations. Today, with the unveiling of this marvelous development, they have taken the overall guest experience to new heights, while attracting generations of visitors to Fiji for decades to come, he said. Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama also commended Wyndhams commitment to sustainability through Wyndham Green, the companys global environmental program. Many environmentally sustainable features were incorporated into the redevelopment, including the use of local timbers, natural light and cross flow ventilation, energy saving lighting and water saving devices, plus energy efficient cooling systems. The refurbishment and expansion of the 201 apartment Wyndham Resort Denarau Island (formally the WorldMark Denarau Island Resort) have been extensive. Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific has spent over FJD$50 million (AUD$30 million) in developments at the resort over the last two years including the Phase III development. Based on design concepts by Australian architects Guymer Bailey, the design, construction, architecture, and fit-out with furniture, fixtures and equipment of the resort redevelopment were undertaken by Fijian firm Architects Pacific under the direction of Pacific Building Solutions with mostly local Fijian consultants, subcontractors and suppliers employed in the redevelopment. Vacation owners and resort guests can now enjoy new accommodation choices of one, two, and three-bedroom deluxe apartments, contemporary in design, incorporating Fijian elements throughout the interiors, plus the three-

bedroom ocean view grand suites and three and four-bedroom luxurious presidential villas with private plunge pools overlooking the ocean. Further enhancements also include an expansive pool area refurbishment with a poolside bar and caf, Karma Maravu Adults Retreat Pool and Bar; the expansion and redevelopment of the resort reception and lobby and kids club plus the relocation and construction of the new Mamacita Mexican Restaurant. Wyndham Resort Denarau Island is also now home to Fijis first Karma Beach Bar Karma Beach Fiji a newly constructed restaurant cafe and bar boasting a white sandy private beach. Having more than doubled its resort portfolio in just 10 years, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacifics explosive global growth is showing no signs of slowing down. This weeks achievements further strengthen Wyndham as the leader in the hospitality and vacation ownership industries, offering guests and vacation club owners exceptional levels of service and memorable experiences in exciting destinations around the globe. Our commitment to providing firstclass accommodation and facilities to WorldMark South Pacific Club by Wyndham owners and guests is reflected in the significant development of this property, one of the first resorts in the Clubs portfolio, which now encompasses 24 resorts throughout the Asia Pacific region, said Mr. Robinson. We are proud to welcome our owners and guests to the best address on the island, offering warm friendly service and brilliant accommodation choices both befitting of the destination and true to the Wyndham legacy, he said. Located on picturesque beachfront, Wyndham Resort Denarau Island is situated a short drive from Nadi Town, with easy access to a range of retail and restaurant outlets and a variety of cruises that provide island-hopping tours and other tropical water activities. With friendly, welcoming staff, it is the perfect base to experience Fiji.

Fiji Airways Introduces 3Rd Weekly Hong Kong Service

Fiji Islands Hotel and Tourism Association has welcomed the announcement by Fiji Airways to increase their flight frequency to Hong Kong. While previously, the national carrier flew twice weekly- Thursdays and Saturdays to Hong Kong, from January, flights to Hong Kong will also be every Monday. Association president Dixon Seeto said this was a worthy move on the part of the national carrier. I think as an area with emerging markets, what Fiji Airways is doing is the right thing which will tap into the traffic in that area- from China, India and that sub-continent, he said. Frequency builds traffic because it provides convenience and people will have more choice. Our tourism stakeholders will definitely benefit from this. The third service will be progressively rolled out, starting with two extra Monday services in December (9 and 16) and then consistently every Monday from January 6, next year. Commenting on the extra frequency,

Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Stefan Pichler said the direct service would offer increased opportunities for customs in emerging markets. Additionally, the convenient arrival and departure times allow our customers to transit Hong Kong to the Middle East, Europe or Africa, Mr Pichler said. With our third A330 aircraft to be delivered in November, we will continue to refine our long haul network schedule and enable more direct flights as well as connections all over the world. In December, the third weekly Nadi Hong Kong service will operate on the 9th and the 16th. The flight will depart Nadi in the evening, arriving early in Hong Kong on Tuesday morning. From January, the flight schedule for all three services will be as per the timetable. Flights between Nadi and Hong Kong are serviced exclusively by Fiji Airways brand newA330 aircraft, offering enhanced Economy and Business Class service for customers.

Israel Offers Help

Israel has offered to send a team of observers to next years general elections. The Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has confirmed this. When he was asked to respond to an European Union statement that they would only come in to observe the elections if invited, he said: My Government does not want a repeat of 2006 when, despite glaring anomalies and fraud, the European Union observer group still declared the elections credible. We cannot agree to such flawed missions, he said. He said Fiji needed to have integrity across the entire gambit of the Fijian electoral process which means also having an observer group that has integrity. Can they come as observers? the media asked him. He said: If they want to come as observers they will have to write to us and well make a decision. Many, he said, had offered to be observers in the elections. During a state visit to Papua New Guinea in April this year, he had discussions with the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Peter ONeill, on having Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) observers for the elections. He had also invited PNG and the Group MSG countries to prepare an observer mission. The MSG leaders meeting at Escapade Resort, Noumea, New Caledonia agreed to an MSG Election Observer Mission for the Fiji elections. He said Government would make sure that the 2014 elections was fair, credible and transparent. If they (EU) want to come as observers they will have to write to us and well make a decision.

The prosecution in a fraud case has been given one last chance before a bench warrant is issued by the Suva Magistrates Court for a man charged with one count of obtaining money. Magistrate Hettiwattege Somaratne told police prosecutions that they would need to execute the bench warrant on the accused, Alvin Prasad. Otherwise, he said, the charges would be separated. Prasad is charged along with Mohammed Yunus Hussein who made an appearance with his legal aid lawyer Lavenia Raisua. Ms Raisua told the court that her client had been attending court since 2009 and the case has been dragging on for a while because Prasad was not present in court sittings.

It is alleged the two between October 1, 2007, and March 9, 2008, with intent to defraud obtained $40,698 from a Iqbal Hassan by falsely pretending that they were in a position to provide skilled migration visas for Mr Hassan and his family to Australia. FIJIAN students completing legal studies at the USP's Port Vila faculty were reminded of their duties and responsibilities as the future of Fiji in an audience with the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau on Tuesday night. Ratu Epeli, who had earlier met the Vanuatu head of state to provide an update on Fiji's path to elections, said Fiji's 2013 Constitution provided youths with an opportunity to make Fiji a successful country. "The assenting of the Constitution means youth of Fiji have a much higher calling," Ratu Epeli said, quoted in a statement issued from the Ministry of Information. "The Constitution is all about youth. "The Constitution has now provided a level playing field for all Fijians and everyone will now get an equal opportunity on what is available. It will

come down on individuals." He told the students it would be the first time for most of them to vote but advised them to temper their voting decisions with a clear thought. "Most of you will be voting for the first time but don't just be excited about getting to vote. "It is those responsibilities that come with decision making which is more important. "So my message to you is get registered but exercise your rights with responsibility. "You are the future of Fiji and your decisions are very important to Fiji and its running so make sure that you set your priorities right and graduate with high marks." He said Fiji's 2013 Constitution provided Fiji's youth the opportunity to make Fiji a successful country.

THE High Court in Suva heard from the brother of the accused person standing trial on the alleged rape of a woman in March last year. In his evidence, the witness said on March 8 last year, he picked up the accused from Nausori Town after attending to a car breakdown. The witness, who was driving his brother's taxi, said when he picked up the accused, the accused asked him to drive him to an ATM at Valelevu. As the witness began to reverse, the accused noticed a girl walking by on the road and asked his brother to stop so he could pick her up. The accused got out of the taxi, chatted with her and both the accused and the girl got into the backseat of the witness' taxi. The witness recalled taking his brother and the girl to the Total petrol station

in Laucala Beach to get fuel, while the accused got out to use the ATM. The girl, who remained in the taxi, said the smell of fuel made her feel sick and so the witness drove out of the station so she would not feel sick. He recalled her throwing up because he observed that she was drunk and the smell of the fuel did not help. The accused then returned and asked the witness to drive them to a hotel in Suva, which he did and both of them got out and walked into the room holding hands. The brother recalled that although he was tired of waiting around for the accused to pay for the taxi fare, he did not notice anything out of the ordinary and the accused and the girl did not have any fights or arguments. The trial continues.

IN a bid to raise awareness on improving nutrition in children and battling malnutrition in Fiji, Save the Children Fiji (SC Fiji) held a Race for Survival. Children from six primary schools joined a number of other countries who were also part of the race initiated by Save the Children International. Speaking at the event, SC Fiji's new CEO Raijeli Nicole said the race was

about shedding light on the idea of children racing for their survival. "Today, children from at least 100 countries from as far as China, Bangladesh, Philippines, Kenya, England, Nepal and as close as Australia and New Zealand are running a relay race to say 'No child is born to die. And no mother should die giving birth'," Mrs Nicole said to guests and participants.

Family Farewells Little Angel

MERESEINI Bainivalu, the baby who caught the nation's heart after she was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year, passed away last week. But rather than mourning the loss of their child, Kelepi and Ofa Bainivalu are thankful that they got to spend a special time with her. They had returned from India, where doctors advised them there was nothing that could be done to save their little angel. "He said it was best for us to go back to Fiji, and he said we should spend as much time with her, and that she was special as she had brought us this far from Fiji," said Mr Bainivalu. "It was really special. I even participated in the Fiji Day Parade for the first time," Mr Bainivalu, a military-able seaman, said. "Usually we don't attend the Fiji Day celebration, usually we see it as a public holiday and an extra day to stay home, but we went down and celebrated as a family," Mrs Bainivalu added. One-year-old Mereseini passed away last Sunday in the hospital where she had been admitted for pneumonia. "I was rocking her to sleep and as she slept, I saw that she wasn't moving, her chest wasn't moving," her mother said. Her father said she passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Taxpayers owe the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority millions in Fringe Benefit Tax, a recent tax audit has revealed. FRCA chief executive Jitoko Tikolevu said it has come to the attention of the Authority that a majority of employers who are lodging VAT Returns do not make the mandatory FBT adjustments. He said these are very serious omissions and are to be immediately corrected. All employers must register for Fringe Benefit if they provide fringe benefits. Any non-cash benefits provided by the employer are subjected to 20 per cent FBT. We urge taxpayers to comply and we have offered a grace period to ensure they do. We have reduced tax rates significantly in recent years, we have improved our processes to facilitate businesses and it is only right that our taxpayers exercise good faith and comply with the laws. FRCA will offer a grace period until November 11, 2013 for taxpayers to comply. Full statutory penalties will be applied to all employers who do not pay up and penalties include fines and imprisonment. Meanwhile, the Authority collected $8.2 million from Fringe Benefit in first half of this year, an increase from the $2.9million recorded for the same period last year. Sangam Makes A Difference

Sangam Fiji Foundation in conjunction with Vodafone Fiji Foundation took another mile stone by joining Vodafone Fijis world of Difference programme and helping needy and vulnerable students in rural areas. An agricultural symposium has been conducted in Sangam schools to educate and empower students on the importance of backyard gardening using holistic methods. The main objective of this project is to empower and educate students in backyard gardening using resources available around us, such as tires, gallons, plastic bottles, cups, etcetera, TISI Sangam youth officer Jitendra Naidu said. More emphasis should be given to agriculture (backyard gardening) and other organisations should also join in hands and educate and empower people in rural areas for fresh produce, Mr Naidu added. Sangam Fiji Foundation also distributed stationeries to disadvantaged students in rural areas.

B737s Fleet Refurbished

FIJI Airways has completed the repainting and refurbishment of its B737s fleet. Managing director and CEO Stefan Pichler said two A330s were already painted in the new brand colours from the Airbus manufacturing facility in Toulouse. Mr Pichler said the repainting and refurbishment of four B737 aircraft had been done at maintenance check, normal change cycles and other down times. This, he said, minimised the cost of the aircraft being out of schedule. He said the third A330 Airbus would arrive in the country next month. In terms of their relationship with partowner Qantas, he said, they had an existing interlining and codes sharing partnership, which worked well. "We will review it together to see if we can further improve it. With the hopeful extended relationship, this will give us better market access to Australia and therefore more revenue." Meanwhile, Mr Pichler told The Australian that regardless of ownership issues, the commercial relationship between the two airlines was working well. "I think our relationship with Qantas is of future benefit they make money out of it; we make money out of it. I think we can extend it." Meanwhile, Mr Pichler announced the appointment of Fijian lawyer Cecille Sanchez as the airline's new general counsel. Ms Sanchez replaced Jay Shree Raniga, who had moved on to pursue further studies in the US. Ms Sanchez was appointed after an exhaustive search process.

A total of 36,272 people comprising 8 of senior citizens and persons with disabilities are benefiting from the Fiji governments bus fare subsidy program. Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni says to date, there are 35,074 elderly, (60 years and over), along with 1,198 persons with disability who are benefiting from the bus fare subsidy. If we look at the census, in Fiji we have about 62,000 people who are 60 years and above in age. Until now we have only just over 50 percent of that number who are benefiting from the bus fare scheme. There are about 36,272 beneficiaries of the bus fare subsidy and majority of these are senior citizens, she said. The Department of Social Welfare processes all the applications for bus

fare subsidy, those who want to apply have to provide their passport photos and birth certificate and we process the Identification Card (ID) cards. For elderly they carry a yellow ID card and permanently disabled have a red ID card. She added that with the inclusion of electronic ticketing, recipients are 8 given free cards and the same condition applies whereby those 60 years and above pay half the bus fare while 8 persons with disabilities can travel for free. The bus fare scheme is an agreement between the government and the Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) that was signed in 2011 and it allows elderly persons with age of 60 years and above to pay half the fare while disabled persons are eligible for free bus fares.

BSP Fiji rural/maritime customers now have easier access to banking services more than ever through an agreement with Post Fiji Limited. The agreement will see customers gaining access of their electronic funds transfer at point of sale (EFTPOS) machines. BSP country manager Kevin McCarthy said these had been placed already in 17 post offices while another 31 will be installed before year end at the 58 outlets of the Post Fiji. Our customers mostly have passbook accounts so were going on a major drive now to encourage those customers to convert to card-based accounts, Mr McCarthy said. The Post Office will be able to issue cards, reset PIN (Personal Identification Number) because previously the customer has had to come to the mainland for that to happen. The customer can do very easy and convenient service from a passbook to a card-based customer account. BSP has about 15,000 customers in the

Milestone achievement Post Fiji chairman Lawrence Tikaram said this was a milestone achievement for them with more interactive reach with customers. Today is a signing agreement for a step forward from Post Fiji with customers of BSP to service consumers, Mr Tikaram said. It provides people the opportunity to engage in financial services more efficiently and also at a lower cost to the consumer The savings here that as two synergies come together, we always find our strengths, well continue to increase and hopefully those strengths will pass onto the consumer and benefit them. Meanwhile the BSP Branch Pacific House is undergoing refurbishment to become a sales and business centre and is expected to open by the end of November.

IT is certain that the issue of breast cancer is complex and the characteristic of cancer is often determined by treatment. The World Foundation for Natural Science strongly believes that breast cancer healing lies in prevention. World Foundation for Natural Science representative Lorraine Halliwell said since her arrival, she had been reading a lot about breast cancer and how different organisations were working together to create awareness. Ms Halliwell said cancer was a fearful thing but it was really just a wake-up call for people, particularly women, to look at changing their direction in life. She said looking at hazards of microwave radiation, the female breast was not only very sensitive to artificial substances and toxin but to a high degree in technological radiation. Ms Halliwell said because of its exposed position and because of the delicate and branched thoracic ducts, the breasts acted as a sensitive antenna, even for technological radiation. "As we are permanently surrounded by technologically-created microwaves emanating from mobile phones, mobile phone towers, cordless telephones, WIFI stations, hot spots and microwave

ovens there is a massive increase of breast cancer risk," she said. "Metal holders which are sewn in most bras also act as additional antennae for technological radiation and this is why we emphatically suggest that only brassieres without metal holders should be worn." She said there were studies that confirmed that negative emotions such as fear, guilty feelings or hidden anger suppressed women's immune system. "Permanent stress is just as problematic as it can affect the hormone production in the adrenal glands, which also facilitates estrogen dominance. "In order to remain healthy, many women have to learn to find a balance between giving and receiving and they must learn to not constantly suppress their own needs." She said there was an important potential for breast cancer prevention in the proper handling of stressful situations and processing of burdening emotions. She added some of the things that women could do to prevent breast cancer was to avoid hormone active drugs, they should wear non-constricting bras that were made of organic cottons and should eat nutritious organic food.

As D-Day for closure of mills approaches and the organisations within the sugar industry are seeking extension dates. The Sugar Industry Tribunal had released the season concluding dates for the four sugar mills around the country last week. Penang Mill stopped crushing last Sunday, Labasa and Lautoka Mills are scheduled to stop October 27 while Rarawai Mill will conclude its crushing on October 29 as per the tribunals order.

Sugarcane Farmers Urge Council To Push For Closing Extension

Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive, Sundresh Chetty said a number of requests on this issue had been brought forward. The council will work closely with Fiji Sugar Corporation to see how best this issue can be addressed, Mr Chetty said. We are monitoring the situation closely due to the change in weather because growers and lorry drivers are facing difficulties in transporting fresh harvested cane to the mills. Around 170,000 tonnes of harvestable cane are still on the fields to be crushed which could be about two weeks of crushing time. The Council aims to maximise the sugar production which is beneficial for both the farmers and Fiji in terms of revenue. Corporation to confirm The Fiji Sugar Corporation says it will look at various factors before making a confirmation regarding concerns raised on extension of mill closure. Corporation executive chairman, Abdul Khan said: Definitely we will

The launch of the inaugural trip for a tourist cruise ship to the Lau group demonstrate the positive growth of Fiji's tourism industry. This was highlighted by the Minister for Works, Transport and Public Utilities Mr Timoci Lesi Natuva as he officiated on behalf of Government at the inaugural launch . "This new development will boost our thriving tourism industry by attracting more tourists into our shores." The Minister highlighted the contribution from the tourism sector to Fiji adding that it is "Fiji's fastest growing industry in terms of employment creation and

look into this issue, however rather than requesting for extension of dates, farmers need to ensure the consistency of supply to the mills. Firstly it is very costly to stop start the sugar mills and what we want to do is to avoid or eliminate this cost. Secondly if we do not get efficient extraction, Tonne Cane to Tonne Sugar (TCTS) increases whereby the farmers and the relevant stakeholders lose out. foreign exchange earnings". Today's launch will see the vessel set sail for the first time to the Lau Group and in particular to Vanuabalavu, Fulaga Island, Kabara, Totoya and Wailagilagi. This, the Minister said would influence and boost employment for locals living in these communities. "It provides an opportunity for small village businesses such as the sale of art and craft products such as wood carvings, baskets and necklaces by villagers." Tourists who were the first to sail were treated to a performance by the police jazz band.

Bold actions and strengthened partnership for development are urgently required to address the problems of the Least Development Countries (LDCs), says Fijis Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Peter Thomson. Speaking in Fiji's capacity as Chair of the 133-member Group of 77 and China, Ambassador Thomson told the UN's Second Committee that agreed Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) commitments must be met if the LDCs are to progress. He said other commitments that should be fulfilled in a timely manner are implementation of duty-free and quotafree marketing access on a lasting basis for all of the LDCs. Thomson reported that there has been some modest progress in the two years since the Istanbul Programme of Action was put in place for LDCs. However he said LDCs continue

to face pervasive poverty, serious structural impediments to growth, low levels of human development, and high exposure to shocks and disasters. He said that the deterioration of the global economic environment had been transmitted to LDCs in the form of declining Foreign Direct Investment and ODA flows. He added that all LDCs are lagging behind in the critical areas of science, technology and innovation and that these play an important role in development and in this context, the Group of 77 supported the establishment, during the current session of the UN General Assembly, of a proposed technology bank for LDCs. There are forty-nine countries on the UN's LDC list. These include the Pacific Small Island Developing States of Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

THE Fiji Commerce Commission is warning traders and retailers to adhere to the new price limit for fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). And consumers have been encouraged to notify the commission if they discover that a trader has been overcharging. The warning follows complaints from consumers about the high cost of kerosene before the recent increase at most retail shops in the Central Division. This means consumers have to pay $1.90 for a liter of kerosene and traders must keep to the new prices that came into effect from midnight October 5. "The prices set out are the maximum retail or wholesale prices, as the case may be, at which the goods specified in it may be sold within the cities of Suva, Lautoka and Lami. Prices will vary outside these areas," said commission CEO Bobby Maharaj. Speaking at the fuel price announcement last week, commission chairman Dr Mahendra Reddy said the price would also be different for outer islands because

winning formula and the Groups financial performance was a result of strong growth in operating revenues plus prudent cost management and efficient utilization of strong cash flows, which reduced financing costs. Allowing employees to be invested in the success of the enterprise through performance-based bonuses is a big part of that, he said. These employees have produced results, and they deserve to be rewarded. FPCL Chairman Tevita Kuruvakadua said Fiji Ports Group owes its success in 2012 to the hard work and skilful performance of management and employees at all levels and they deserve to be recognized with a bonus. of costs associated with transportation. Mr Maharaj said anyone found guilty of the offence would be liable under the Commerce (Price Control) (Petroleum Prices) Order 2013, which was made pursuant to Section 44 of the Commerce Commission Decree 2010. He said any trader selling above the prices set by the commission created an offence under section 52 of decree. He said the section says "no person or body corporate shall sell or buy or agree or offer to sell or buy goods at a greater price than the maximum price fixed and declared by an order made under the provisions of subsection (1) of section 44". This, Mr Maharaj said, meant anyone selling above the prices authorised by the commission through the order created an offence of "overcharging". "If a trader is caught overcharging, they can either be fined on the spot or prosecuted," he said. He said stakeholders could obtain the regulated prices from the commission.

Fijians rely on the civil service not just to keep the country running, but also to help the national leadership anticipate needs and chart the future, says Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. Speaking at the Service Excellence Awards for civil servants in Lami, Bainimarama said career public servants owe their loyalty to all Fijians and must work faithfully under the national leadership. The leadership sets priorities and major direction, but the people depend on the civil service to execute programs, he said. You are the continuity in government, the institutional memory, and the technical experts. The people need you, and they have a right to expect that you will dedicate yourselves to their welfare. I understand that the civil service is adopting standards and values for project and program management, and I applaud you for that. But, good government will never

be achieved solely by acquiring and refining management skills. Strong positive values, innate good qualities that are personally driven, and simple good character are essential qualities for a public servant. We are a small nation with great ambitions, and our civil service needs to demonstrate these kinds of values and qualities every day if we are to realize our ambitions for development, honest government, and true equality, he said. And I also give these words of advice to all those who will hire new employees in the public service: Dont just look for skills and experience. Look for good character as well. Skills and experience can be learned, but good character is priceless. He added that our new Constitution demands that age, gender, ethnicity and religion must not be barriers to employment and the Civic Service must also ensure that individuals are hired and promoted on merit.

THE Fiji National Provident Fund recorded an increase in the number of eligible members who had fully withdrawn their savings during the 2013 financial year. And according to CEO Aisake Taito, 10,551 members opted for the full withdrawal totaling $109.3million compared with 5350 members who had withdrawn $117.54m last year. "Members are eligible to withdraw their funds once they are 55 years old. They have the option of joining the pension scheme or taking a lump sum or a combination of pension products and lump sum payment," he said. "In total, 57,822 withdrawal applications were received during the year. These applications included those applying for pre-retirement withdrawals and those opting to withdraw fully from the fund." In terms of migration, he said, members who planned to leave Fiji to settle permanently overseas could withdraw their FNPF savings. For the 2013 financial year, he said $34.3m was paid out to 1920 members withdrawing under the scheme. "Of these, $6.5m was paid to noncitizen members who left Fiji. The total withdrawn for migration in 2012 was $44.3m," he said. Under housing withdrawals, Mr Taito said $47.8m was paid out in 2013 to 4869 members compared with the 3914 members assisted for $40.2m in 2012. Of these, he said, $7.3m were for those applying under the village housing scheme. "In terms of pre-retirement, members can access their funds only for housing, education, medical, unemployment and funeral assistance," he said. "Members who have rejoined the fund after withdrawing on retirement grounds are allowed partial withdrawal of their funds once every six months." He said a total of $52.7m was paid out on those grounds for 34,470 members compared with $45.5m for 39,636 members in 2012.

The Nadroga Navosa Provincial Council hopes to channel half of the money expected from its annual fundraising drive towards education. The council expects to collect $240,000 at the two-day Adi Salusalu carnival that begins this Friday. Assistant roko tui Nadroga Rusiate Raidaveta said the council was optimistic of achieving its target. He said educational assistance included allowances for tertiary students and high school students, tuition fees for private students and the payment of the council houses in Suva that houses its tertiary students. "Education remains a priority for the council which is the reason we are budgeting $140,000 for education," Mr Raidaveta said. "We have witnessed the importance of education and we want to

continue developing, supporting and encouraging our students to strive for excellence in education. "Education brings about development in the province and we want our students to be well educated." The council's main fundraising drive is from the $20 levy required from all those over 18 years registered in the Vola ni Kawa Bula under the Ba province. From this levy, $10 is set aside for the education scheme and the remaining $10 added to the provincial collection. Mr Raidaveta said the council had also budgeted $100,000 for the renovation of the provincial office and incentives for the village headmen and district representations. The carnival will be opened by the headmen and district representatives.

Cruise Liner Stops Over

TOURISTS from a visiting cruise liner were all smiles at the weekend when they dropped into Suva for shopping before sailing off again. Docked at the Suva Wharf, the Oosterdam cruise liner, which carried hundreds of tourists, came into port early Saturday morning and left again hours later, giving tourists ample time to wander the streets of Suva. Auckland tourist Bob Woodward was delighted to be in the country with his wife and two daughters. "Fiji is beautiful. We've always wanted to

come here, so to finally be here is a great feeling," Mr Woodward said. "Suva has a lot of tall buildings and beautiful sights and my wife particularly likes the vegetable and handicraft markets across from the dock." Market vendor Miriama Taukei said the ships were always a good way to meet new people and make that extra dollar. Fijian citizens living in New Zealand can now register to vote in democracy-restoring elections in their homeland next year. Military strongman Voreqe Bainimarama seized power in a coup in 2006. Fiji's government ministry says every citizen over the age of 18 can register provided they can show a valid Fijian passport. Attorney general Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum urged Fijians to vote in what he said would be the first "truly democratic parliamentary election in Fiji's history". "It will be a historic occasion and I know that many Fijians living abroad are delighted that they no longer have to be actually present in Fiji to have their say," he said. The electronic voter-registration centres noe open in Auckland will be in Hunters Plaza in Papatoetoe and Lotus Plaza and Supermarket in Mt Roskill. Other Auckland venues will be opened during the rest of the week. Registration in Wellington will take place at the Fiji High Commission in Pipitea Street.

'Vampire' Dad Eats Daughter's Flesh And Drinks Her Blood

India Principal Charged With Murder Over 23 School Meal Deaths

Indian police have charged a school principal and her husband with murder over the deaths of 23 children who were poisoned by a school meal contaminated with pesticide. The children, aged 4 to 12, fell ill within minutes of eating the lunch of lentils, potatoes and rice cooked at their primary school in a poverty-stricken village in eastern Bihar state in July. The superintendent of police in Saran district, Varun Kumar Sinha, said head teacher Meena Devi and her husband Arjun Rai faced at least five charges including murder and attempt to murder. Police believe the poisoning was done deliberately by the couple, who bought pesticide two days ahead of the tragedy and then stored the lethal chemical in the same room as cooking items. "Police have filed a charge sheet in the court and appealed to the court for the speedy trial in the case," Mr Sinha said. The case shone a light on the often unhygienic and dangerous preparation of food for free midday school meals, a government program intended to combat chronic malnutrition among Indian children.

A student in the US state of Nevada opened fire at a school, killing a staff member and wounding two other students, before taking his own life. The shooter, reported to be 13 or 14 years old, opened fire near a basketball court at the school in the city of Sparks. "The one deceased is a staff member of the school," Washoe County School District police chief Mike Mieras said. "The other deceased individual appears to be a student/suspect in this case," he said. A spokeswoman from Renown Regional Hospital said two students were listed in a critical condition. Police chief Mieras said one of the students had gone through surgery and the other was "doing well". A teenage witness described seeing a fellow student, wearing school uniform, shoot a teacher in the chest. "We were by the basketball court, and

we heard a loud pop, and everybody was screaming," Kyle Nucum, 13, told the Reno Gazette Journal, saying a teacher went to investigate. "I thought it was a firecracker at first," he said. "The student was pointing a gun at the teacher, after the teacher told him to put it down... and then the student fired a shot at the teacher and the teacher fell and everybody ran away. "We ran across the field to get somewhere safe, and while we were running we heard about four or five more shots." US senate majority leader Harry Reid, who represents Nevada, said on his Twitter feed: "My thoughts are with teachers, parents and students at Sparks Middle School who experienced a traumatic morning. Nevada mourns with them."

NEW Zealand police have described an incident where a man tried to hitch a ride home in a police car as "a bit like "dumb and dumber".
Senior Sergeant Malcolm Johnston says police in the rural Canterbury town of Rangiora initially drove past the man as he whistled and tried to hail a ride, but stopped when he walked on to the road and held up his middle finger at them. The newspaper reported that when officers approached the man they smelt cannabis and found a small amount of the drug on him. They also discovered he was wanted for $2800 in unpaid fines. "The moral of the story is that if you haven't paid your fines and you're walking around carrying drugs, don't hail a police car like a taxi ... and don't give them the fingers," Sen Sgt Johnston said.

Malala Yousafzai All Smiles As She Tight Security At India 'Treasure Meets Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip Hunt' Site
Police in northern India have secured the site of an archaeological dig after hundreds of people gathered there amid reports it held buried treasure. The crowds gathered as media reports say that a Hindu seer dreamt 1,000 tonnes of gold was buried under the ruins of a 19th Century fort. Shobhan Sarkar said the gold belonged to King Rao Ram Baksh Singh. Archaeology officials say the dig is not linked to the dream, but a routine attempt to look for cultural artefacts. Government archaeologists began excavating the remains of an old fort in Daundia Khera village in Uttar Pradesh state last Friday morning. The police have been deployed in strength to keep away curious villagers and barricades have been set up to prevent onlookers from entering the excavation site. Geologists who have surveyed the site

Malala Yousafzai was reduced to fits of laughter by Queen Elizabeth's husband, Prince Philip, as she met the royal couple at Buckingham Palace. The 16-year-old, who was shot by the Taliban for championing girls' rights to education, met the Queen at a reception for youth, education and the Commonwealth. The activist survived being shot in the head on her school bus on October 9 last year and was sent for treatment to Britain where she now lives. Malala, accompanied by her father, gave the queen a copy of her autobiography, I Am Malala. "It is a great honour for me to be here, and I wanted to present you with this book," she told the Queen. Accepting the gift, the 87-year-old monarch replied: "That's very kind of you." Malala told the Queen that she was passionate about every child around the world having a right to an education. "Especially in this country as well," she added. "I have heard about many

children that can't go to school, and I want to continue our work." Prince Philip, 92, joked that in Britain, people wanted their children to go to school to get them out of the house - a comment that left Malala covering her face in a fit of giggles. The reception, in the palace's White Drawing Room, was attended by 350 guests from academic institutions around the world. After the attack, Malala was flown to Britain for specialist care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, central England, named after the present monarch's late mother. She has continued her education in the city while being feted in the West, addressing the United Nations and meeting US president Barack Obama. Malala was passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize last week, despite being considered a hot favourite for the award. At an event in Edinburgh last Saturday, Malala is set to be reunited with the two school friends who were injured alongside her.

say there is a possibility that the site contains some metal. Mr Sarkar said the king appeared in his dream and told him to take care of the gold found under the ruins of his fort. Reports say the sage was not taken seriously at first, but this changed after the seer relayed his dream to an Indian government minister who visited him last month. Even before any excavations began, there were several claimants to any treasure found at that location. "If gold is really found there, we should get our share," Associated Press quoted one of the king's descendants, Navchandi Veer Pratap Singh, as saying. Uttar Pradesh state authorities, as well as local officials, also said they had a right to the wealth and that the "treasure trove should be used for the development of the state", as reported.

A man allegedly opened fire in a Las Vegas nightclub after being denied a refund, killing a patron who tried to intervene, police say. A security guard and a manager Drai's After Hours, a club at Bally's HotelCasino were injured and taken to hospital, police Sgt John Sheahan said. The shooting happened at the club on the Las Vegas Strip shortly before 06:00 local time (13:00 GMT). The suspect is also in hospital with unspecified injuries. Police believe he acted alone. "The person is in custody," Sgt Sheahan said. "The weapon is in custody." Officials said the suspect paid an unspecified cover charge to enter Drai's then demanded his money back before shooting a manager. The gunman was then subdued by patrons, one of whom was killed in the struggle.

Ronnie And Connie Mccall Accused Of Selling Daughters Into Child Porn Ring
AN American couple has been accused of selling three of their daughters to a child pornography ring, as reported. The girls, aged 12, 15 and 17, were sold and forced to perform sexual acts against their will. The horrific allegations only surfaced after Connie Sue McCall, 40, and her husband Ronnie Lee McCall, 61, were investigated by authorities for child neglect. One of the girls had head and body lice, flea bites, ring worm and rotten teeth. A fourth daughter, aged five was taken into care after it was discovered most of her teeth were rotten. "The amount of tooth decay, you can imagine, was extremely painful. She had black teeth, and holes in all the teeth, just really inexcusable," Debbie Dunn of the Johnson City Police Department told WATE-TV. The true horror of the children's situation only came to light after they were questioned about their parents' neglect, said District Attorney Tony Clark.

Another security guard was injured. Although violent crime in Las Vegas fell by 13% last year, and was down 11% for the first part of 2013, a recent rash of incidents has hit the headlines. A deadly shooting and car chase on the Strip in February killed three. A murder trial in that case, with the defendant facing the death penalty, is scheduled to begin in December.

"There was money that changed hands between the individuals that were taking pictures and the parents," he said. "The children said that they had been taken to various locations and performing sex acts with an adult. "When you have parents allegedly making money off their kids through pornography and exploitation, even after 20 years, it's one of the worst cases I've ever seen." The girls also claim their parents were regularly high on bath salts. The man accused of having sex with the underage girls is reported to have committed suicide.

Roma Couple Remanded In Custody After Facing Greek Court Over Mystery Girl Maria

Obama Catches Fainting Woman

A Greek Roma couple has been remanded in custody on charges of child abduction after a young girl in their care, was found to be unrelated to them. Christos Salis, 39, and Eleftheria Dimopoulou, 40, told a court in the central Greek city of Larrisa that the little girl called Maria had been given to them by a Bulgarian woman who could not care for her. Police removed the girl from the couple's custody during a raid on their camp last week after her blonde hair and pale skin aroused suspicions. The couple's lawyer says they are trying to track down the biological mother of the child privately. Salis told the court that if he were released on bail he could track down the Bulgarian mother within days. The court rejected the application. "They had hoped for a different result, but we always respect the decision of the Greek justice system," the couple's lawyer Kostas Katsavos told journalists. Outside the court members of the Roma community also gathered to show solidarity. The case has highlighted the marginalisation of the Roma people in Greece, some of whom say they fear a backlash against their community. Meanwhile, Maria is said to be doing well in the care of a children's charity. It is now thought the girl is aged between five and six, and not four as originally thought. Her plight has attracted worldwide attention, with Greek authorities receiving more than 8,000 phone calls about the girl from as far away as Australia, Texas and Sweden. It has also raised hope for parents of other missing children, including the parents of British girl Madeleine McCann, who last week launched a fresh appeal to find their daughter.

Canadian-Led Drug Ring Busted

Australian police say they've busted a Canadian-led international syndicate that imported nearly two tonnes of drug-making materials worth almost $300 million to the country. The media reports eight Canadians and two Australians are in custody. Police said the weekend arrests followed the seizure last month in Melbourne of 650 kilograms of pseudoephedrine that had been hidden in vanilla powder jars. They said the chemical came from India and is used to produce crystal meth. Three of the Canadians -- Catherine McNaughton, 30, Edmond Proko, 46, and James Kelsey, 27 - appeared in a Melbourne court charged with drug trafficking. They're due back in court in January. The 18-month investigation known as Operation Diamondback involved Australian federal and state law enforcement agencies.

Bitter Melon
(Bitter Gourd)
Nutrition Information And Facts Bitter melon is one of the best vegetable-fruit that helps improve diabetic and toxemia conditions. The bitter melon (also known as bitter gourd) looks like a cucumber but with ugly gourd-like bumps all over it. As the name implies, this vegetable is a melon that is bitter. There are two varieties of this vegetable: One grows to about 20 cm long, is oblong and pale green in color. The other is the smaller variety, less than 10 cm long, oval and has a darker green color. Both varieties have seeds that are white when unripe and that turn red when they are ripe. The vegetable-fruit turn reddish-orange when ripe and becomes even more bitter. Bitter gourd thrives in hot and humid climates, so are commonly found in Asian countries and South America. Westerners may not be so used to bitter melons, so may find them more difficult to consume. But if you can generally take bitter taste, you may be able to take this too. Try it, at least for all its healthful virtues! Nutritional Benefits Bitter gourds are very low in calories but dense with precious nutrients. It is an excellent source of vitamins B1, B2, and B3, C, magnesium, folic acid, zinc, phosphorus, manganese, and has high dietary fiber. A body found in the Fraser River Wednesday morning has been identified as Joginder Mander, a man who went missing earlier this month. Mander, 64, had last been seen on Oct. 7 in Guildford. Shortly after his disappearance, his family initiated a manhunt. On Wednesday at about 7 a.m., police pulled his body from the Fraser River. Surrey RCMP confirm they received a call from staff on the Barnston Island Ferry, who reported a body was washed ashore on the north side of the Fraser River. Foul play is not suspected. It is the second body found in just over a week in the Fraser. The first, found mid-October, has not been identified yet.

Canada and the European Union have struck a free trade agreement aimed at boosting growth and employment. The deal will lower tariffs, streamline regulation, and cut red tape. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso agreed the deal at a meeting in Brussels last Friday. Mr Barroso said they had reached a "breakthrough in negotiations" to achieve "a great agreement for both the European Union and Canada". The deal still requires approval by parliaments and EU member states. Once approved, the agreement aims to make it easier for companies in Canada and the 28-member EU bloc to invest in and sell to each other.

Canada And European Union Agree Free-Trade Deal

The European Union is Canada's second-largest trading partner behind the US. Mr Harper said the agreement was "the biggest (trade) deal our country has ever made". It will give Canada access to a market of some 500 million people in the EU, making it bigger even than the country's North American Free Trade Agreement signed with the US and Mexico. The European Commission expects the deal to increase bilateral trade in goods and services by a fifth to 25.7bn euros ($35bn; 21.7bn) a year. The commission is negotiating trade pacts with more than 80 countries on behalf of the bloc's members following the collapse of the Doha global trade talks.

Jason Kenney Urges Provinces, Employers To Step Up And Improve Apprenticeship Programs
Employment Minister Jason Kenney is picking on the provinces and the private sector for failing to nurture the growing demand for skilled tradespeople across Canada and for being overly protectionist when it comes to apprenticeships. In an interview with Postmedia News Wednesday, a day before a keynote address to the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship in Ottawa, Kenney said the provinces need to restore trade and vocational programs in high schools. While a potentially costly endeavor since many schools got rid of specialized equipment when programs were disbanded, Kenney said employers may have a role to play in helping schools re-acquire the tools needed to train potential future employees. A lot of private sector companies do just that for the community college sector, he said. Community colleges all across Canada are getting sponsorships from typically larger companies to get them the equipment they need to train kids in these programs. Im sure some of these companies would be prepared to help with costs in high school, as well. Provinces like Ontario also need to take a page from the west, he said, and dump antiquated ratio systems that limit the number of apprentices who can work, relative to the number of ticketed journeymen. [There] appears to be a legacy of protectionist attitude towards the trades, he said, noting Ontario requires four journeymen for every one apprentice in some trades. We should be encouraging more tradespeople to get onto work sites and not fewer, especially given the shortages were seeing in some occupations. Noting Alberta and British Columbia have significantly liberalized their apprenticeship rules, he called on Ontario to follow their lead. Kenney also said more needs to be done to facilitate the completion of apprenticeships. More than 400,000 Canadians are registered in apprenticeship programs, he said, but only a small fraction complete them and become fully certified. Barriers include the lack of income apprentices face during periods of classroom training, he said, adding employers should step up and provide financial assistance to cover the gaps. Noting apprentices dont generally qualify for government student loan programs, Kenney said that too is something both the federal and provincial governments needs to reconsider. In speaking with the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship, Kenney said he will encourage the organization to modernize its Red Seal Program created in the 1950s. It sets inter-provincial standards in 55 different trades, and journeymen with the endorsement enjoy greater workplace mobility. Kenney said the program should be expanded to include more trades. We have a very dynamic labour market. Theres people trained in one province who end up working in other provinces, he said. This is not the 1950s anymore and we should do everything we possibility can to pave the way for greater labour mobility across the country. Kenney said he hopes to address many of these issues when he meets with his provincial counterparts next month in Toronto.

Flu shots are now available at doctors offices, pharmacies, walk-in clinics and specialized public health flu clinics. In a typical flu season, thousands of people develop serious illness or even die from the flu or its complications, such as pneumonia, said chief medical health officer, Dr. Paul Van Buynder. The influenza vaccine is the best protection against influenza illness and its complications and is a safe and effective way to help people stay healthy, prevent illness, and even save lives. There are between 4,000 and 8,000 deaths from influenza and its complications each year in Canada. Fraser Health recommends flu shots for everyone. They are free in B.C. for a long list of people: children from six months to five years of age; people 65 years and older; pregnant women;

Aboriginal people; people with chronic health conditions; and those with compromised immune systems. The vaccine is also important for anyone who lives or works with a person who is at higher risk of problems from the flu. To protect patients in health care facilities, last year British Columbias health authorities adopted a policy requiring all doctors, staff, students and volunteers to get immunized or to wear a mask while at work during influenza season. To further protect patients, were also asking people visiting our facilities to do the same. Masks will be available at nursing stations and/ or outpatient reception desks. People planning to visit loved ones in a health care facility or who will take family members to outpatient appointments are also eligible for a free flu shot. New this year is the availability of a nasal spray vaccine, Flumist. It is free for eligible children aged two to 17 years old. It is a live vaccine that provides better protection in younger children than the regular flu shot. As it is sprayed into the nose, it has the added advantage of being needle-free. Online Voting Gets Thumbs Down From Elections BC

Risk of fraud and security challenges too great An independent panel struck by Elections BC last year to review the possibility of internet voting is recommending against the move. In a preliminary report released on Wednesday, the five-member Independent Panel on Internet Voting says that "the most significant potential benefit of internet voting is increased accessibility and convenience for B.C. voters." But it also concludes there are also significant downsides. "It is important to understand that although the internet is used for an increasing number of interactions... with their own risks, voting over the internet has a set of unique challenges that inevitably introduce a number of additional risks," the report states. According to Elections BC's Chief Electoral Officer Keith Archer, preliminary findings do not suggest that internet voting would increase voter turnout, a suggestion often put forward by supporters of the move to online. "It's sometimes thought that internet voting is going to increase the voting turnout amongst young voters, and again the evidence doesn't bear that out. The data revealed that the voters most likely to use the internet voting option are middle aged and older voters," he says. The report concludes that voting online should not be universally implemented any time soon, though in specific cases right now it could be limited to voters with accessibility issues. It also states that there should be a "province-wide coordinated approach" to implement a new system. The public can submit feedback on the preliminary report until Dec. 4, and the final report is anticipated to reach the legislative assembly by spring 2014.

Delta Man Nabbed In U.S. On Gun Smuggling Charge

A Delta man faces up to almost four years in a U.S. prison after pleading guilty to attempting to smuggle a gun across the border into Canada. Court documents indicate Ravinder Singh Toor, 21, of Delta headed across the Pacific Highway border crossing on May 29 of this year, saying he was just heading down to do some shopping at Bellis Fair mall. Prior to his attempt to cross, B.C.'s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) warned border guards Toor may try to enter the U.S. He had been under investigation in this province for alleged arms smuggling and drug trafficking. After he entered the U.S., border patrol alerted the U.S. Homeland Security, which began to follow Toor. According to charging papers, Toor dropped off his sister and cousin at the mall, then drove to an auto shop. He came out of the shop carrying a small black gun case. He later drove to an electronics shop and came out with a "VCR-type device." Then he walked into a UPS store to mail the package to an address on 120 Street in Surrey. Homeland Security investigators found a Glock handgun and empty magazines. Toor admitted he obtained a weapon in the United States. His guilty plea, to a single count of smuggling firearms, was accepted Monday in U.S. District Court in Seattle. Prosecutors suggested a sentence of up to three years and 10 months. He has not been formally sentenced.

Getting started 1. Baby massage is soothing, enjoyable and a great way to connect with your baby. You can do it after a bath or when baby is clothed or in his cot. Before you begin, show baby your hands so he can 'consent' to the massage (he'll turn his head or roll away if he's not interested). 2. To get started, smooth a few drops of edible oil such as olive or sweet almond oil into your warm hands and begin massaging the soles of babys feet. Use firm, gentle, slow strokes from the heel towards the toes. 3. Continue with long smooth strokes up babys legs. Massage from the ankle up to the thigh and over the hip. You can try massaging both legs at once or just one at time. Massaging the upper body 1. Start the upper body massage with your hands on baby's shoulders and make gentle strokes in towards the chest. 2. Massage the arms by stroking from the shoulders down towards the wrists. Try not to get oil on baby's hands but if that happens, wipe his fingers clean before he sucks them. 3. If your babys tummy feels soft Massaging the upper body

If baby is still relaxed once you've finished massaging the front of his body, you can turn him onto his tummy and use long, smooth strokes from head to toe. 3. Use respectful touch and stop the massage if baby is not enjoying himself or showing any signs of being uncomfortable. Its also best to avoid a massage if you are very tense, or if baby is agitated or upset.

Bathing a newborn Preparing the bath 1. When bathing a newborn, start by preparing the bath area. Collect all the bath items you need and position them near the bath. Have an unfolded towel handy in preparation for drying your baby. 2. Make sure the room is at a comfortable temperature and fill the bath with about 5 cm of warm water. Test the water temperature with your wrist or elbow it should be approximately 36 C and should NOT feel hot on your skin. 3. Once the bath is ready, undress your baby. If you have to leave the bath area, wrap baby in a towel and take him / her with you. Its usually not necessary to use soap it can make your newborn slippery and hard to hold. However, if you do decide to use soap, consider an alternative such as sorbolene lotion which wont irritate babys skin. Make sure your newborn is secured in a bouncer or cot before disposing of the bathwater.

Heart Healthy Exercise Tips

Activities as Exercise Can Help Your Heart
To get heart-healthy benefits, you need to get your heart rate up and there are dozens of activities you can do to help your heart. Whether it is a structured exercise program or just part of your daily routine, all physical activity adds up. Its easy to follow these exercise tips at home, at work, and at play to increase the amount of physical activity in your life. Tips to help you start a heart healthy exercise plan. 1. Aerobic exercises done 30 minutes a day is excellent for increasing your heart rate. Climbing the stairs, a brisk walk, orbital exercise machine or treadmill, anything to get your heart rate up. Wii has several fun games such as Wii Sports or Wii Fit Step Aerobics and its great exercise you can do with your kids. Make it a family affair 2. Any moderate-intensity exercise like swimming, jogging, Pilates and yoga is good. Exercising your heart muscle means exercising your body. You dont need a gym, just a bit of motivation and a good pair of walking shoes. 3. If you dont have time then fit shorter but more frequent periods of time, like 5-10 minutes several times a day throughout your day. Take the stairs, park your car further away from the door, and definitely count in those house chores such as mowing the lawn, vacuuming, or a short brisk walk around the block at lunch or for a break. 4. If you already do a vigorous aerobic routine or enrolled in an exercise class, then three days a week for 20 minutes a day is good. 5. For adults that are 65 and older or anyone with chronic conditions or limited mobility, you need the same amount of exercise as younger people the activity can be less intense. Use good judgment and follow your doctors advice. 6. Strength training is a great complement to aerobic training and helps to prevent age-related bone and muscle-mass losses. Keep in mind that strength training doesn't increase heart rate but does increase stamina. Use it to target areas where muscle-tone is needed and dont forget the other muscle groups. 7. With any plan, start strength training slowly and build up to heavier weights and repetitions especially if you are new or out of shape. The old adage "no pain, no gain" is more often inappropriate and can be dangerous. 8. Practice balance exercises to help prevent falls and injuries. Balance techniques are used frequently as exercises in yoga or more simple forms of balancing exercises such as walking heal-to-toe, standing on one foot, or standing up and sitting down without using your hands. 9. Stretching exercises done twice a week helps keep flexibility, which is very important. Consider 10 minutes of stretching twice a week to improve your flexibility With any exercise program, its good to start slowly by warming up, then increasing the pace. A good cooling down afterwards is also equally important. With any new exercise plan, check with your doctor if you are at risk and follow the advice of qualified professionals.

A bloated stomach can invite many health-related problems. Cutting down on salt intake and focusing on potassium-rich fiber can help in getting a flat stomach, says an expert. A new book by a gastroenterologist and founder of the Digestive Centre for Women in Washington D.C., suggests that women have a tendency to bloat more than men mainly because they have longer intestines. There are major differences between the male and female digestive tracts. So, to shrink the stomach size, a few precautions must be taken. - Cut down salt: Too much salt in the diet contributes to edema and bloating. Stick to the recommended 1500 mg of salt intake a day. Don't put salt on the table to add to your dinner and limit the amount whilst cooking. Avoiding ready meals is a must too as these are loaded with salt for flavour. - Eat more fiber: Eating a combination of soluble and insoluble fiber is an effective way to stay fit and avoid the bloated feeling that comes with constipation. Foods that are rich in fiber include oranges, mushrooms,

Some previous studies led to a concern that vitamin D supplementation could increase an individual's risk of developing kidney stones. However, a recent study has found no statistically relevant association between the two. The study, led by Cedric F. Eating potassium-rich foods like bananas and sweet potatoes can help minimise your middle waist. Not drinking enough water can also aggravate your sodium and potassium levels. - Avoid digestive stress: Stay away from foods that are difficult to digest like sugary or fatty foods. Focus instead on simple meals what are made with whole foods and steamed vegetables to heal digestive system. - Ditch artificial sweeteners: Found in flavoured water, diet, low-carbs and sugar-free foods, artificial sweeteners aren't completely digested by body. "Mounting evidence indicates that a Vitamin D serum level in the therapeutic range of 40 to 50 ng per ml is needed for substantial reduction in risk of many diseases, including breast and colorectal cancer," Garland said. He added that this serum level is generally only achieved by taking vitamin supplements. The researcher said that the results may lessen concerns by individuals about taking vitamin D supplements, as no link was shown between such supplementation and an increased risk for kidney stones.

How To Induce Healthy Eating Habits In Children

All of us are aware of the importance of moral values and ethical/civic codes in our children and actively seek to do so. We also take great pains to make sure that our children eat right, because their eating habits can affect their health in the long term. Mistakes to avoid for Healthy Eating: There is no doubt that good health begins right from the moment we are conceived in our mothers womb. Eating habits and choices that we develop in our childhood help maintain our health into adulthood and beyond. It therefore becomes extremely important for parents to inculcate the right eating habits in children as this will define their health. As stated by James Baldwin, children have never been very good at listening to elders but they have never failed to imitate them. So, its very essential for parents to take charge and create the right environment for kids. Parents can adopt the following steps: Make meal times pleasant by involving the entire family, at least for one meal of the day. Encourage your child to eat slowly. It takes the brain 20 minutes to register that the stomach is full. Also, the tastes are savoured more completely when one eats slowly. Never eat in a rush in front of your kids. Sit down, set aside a few minutes for mealtimes and your child will imitate you. One tends to overeat and eat whatever is available when hungry for long. Insulin levels drop and the are not taken in by adverts. Instead, try and reason with the child and help them choose a healthier product. This logical reasoning will help your kids make healthy food choices. Kids today spend hours watching TV and playing various games on the internet, making them couch potatoes. They also tend to eat a lot of junk food, and the digestive system, finds it hard to process the large quantity of food eaten, which may lead to weight gain. So, limit the amount of time your child spends watching television and make time for eating healthy nutritious meals. Variety is the spice of life. Try new recipes and involve your child in the cooking process. This is also an excellent way to educate them about the different nutrients and their importance. Encourage your kids to get involved in some physical activity at least for one hour a day. Take them to the park or involve them in some outdoor activity like a brisk walk or jog. Enroll them in a dance class or a sport they like. This habit of physical activity will continue to a large extent into adulthood, which will help them de-stress and it will also ensure good health. Dont overindulge in any particular food. Remember moderation is the key to a healthful life. So give your child take a treat, once in a week or even a day, as long as it is in moderation. This will ensure that they develop a healthy and fun relationship with food.

body needs glucose fast, so one tends to eat whatever is available. The best way to deal with this is to keep eating smaller meals every 2-3 hours. Foster this practice by keeping healthy snacks around like nuts and seeds, fresh fruits, whole wheat crackers, etc. A good strategy would be to involve the kids in grocery shopping, so they can choose snacks that appeal to them. That is also a good time for you to teach them how to read the labels and make a healthy choice. Dont take the fun out of childhood. Treats are one of the best parts of being a kid. We need to instill good healthy eating habits in kids, but at the same time a timely treat once in a while will not harm the child, as long as you follow the same rule.

Do not force or push the child to eat a lot if he decides to eat less once in a while. Of course, eating very little will make one deficient in important nutrients/vitamins needed for the bodys functions. But with your support/education your child can decide how much he needs to eat and when. Trust his/her judgement. Include a variety of fresh vegetables in different colours, fruits of all kinds, dairy and dairy products, cereals and pulses and your child will never be deficient. This habit of not overeating will go a long way, even into adulthood. We see kids getting influenced by the media. There is an avalanche of advertisements that influence kids choices. Parents need to see that kids

There are facts about juices that are commonly known such as drink vegetable juices as opposed to fruit juices, ensure that you use a mixer and not a juicer so that you get the fiber from the veggies. Other known facts are don't strain the juice, but have it with the pulp and almost always, include doodhi in your juicy diet. However, few know that one must opt for green juices as opposed to just vegetable juice. So what makes the green juice a better option? This is because without the fiber, fruit juice is basically sugar, which will add to your weight. So take juice fruits as a treat but try and eat them whole as far as possible. While the fiber content takes a beating, juices do deliver a powerful array of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that are absorbed immediately into the blood stream. However, avoid combining vegetables with fruits, as they require different enzymes for digestion. The only exception is an apple, which has a more neutral effect.

Benefits of green juices Green juices are power-packed with nutrition. Green vegetables have the ability to transform sunshine into the food that all creatures consume. True to their nature, greens produce chlorophyll, which oxygenate your body. This enables us to release stored toxins in the body. Your hemoglobin (that has a similar molecular structure as that of your red blood cells) will get elevated, improving the blood circulation as a result and giving your body a boost of energy. A green juice will cleanse your digestive system, lungs, liver (which will rev up, if sluggish causing you to retain weight) and uterus. So if you are a smoker, this is an excellent supplement to your diet. Fact file Magnesium is essential for efficient calcium utilisation. The chlorophyll molecule has magnesium at its centre and its impact on the body's magnesium levels is highly significant. When you include green juices in your daily diet, it helps them absorb calcium better.

Benefits Of Green Juices

All green plants have Vitamins A and C, which are important co-factors for calcium absorption. Chlorophyll foods also act as a form of 'stored sunshine', to regulate calcium and Vitamin D deficiency. So if you get no sunshine, then increase the greens in your diet. Methods to follow -Always rotate your greens, don't use one green all the time. Plants carry a trace of alkaloids (which in small doses is okay) and you don't want the same alkaloids to build up in your system. -If you have a strong digestive system, blend greens in a mixer and if not, juice them. -Even though you eat a green vegetable every day, your body will assimilate many more nutrients from blended greens rather than the ones chewed. It's always beneficial to add spirulina and wheat grass powder, as it increases the chlorophyll quotient in the juice. -If taste is important to you, mix dates in your juice. However, watch out if you have yeast, candida, diabetes or

hypoglycemia. -They are best consumed fresh, but you can keep them only for a day at the most in the fridge. Add some lime to preserve them. -Green juices should be ingested on an empty stomach, so have it first thing in the morning or in between meals. A recipe to start with -3-4 leaves of spinach and rotate it with bok choy on other days -A fistful of parsley -A fistful of celery -3 inches of carrots -3 inches of doodhi or zucchini (optional) -4 broccoli florets - a tomato -1 green apple (optional) Blend all the above in a blender with cup water, do not strain, squeeze a lime into it and add some cumin (jeera) powder. You could thin it down with some warm water. While drinking it, roll it in the mouth before taking it down (this aids in digesting the juice).

Temporary WorkersWork In Canada

Temporary workersWork in Canada
You may not need a work permit to work temporarily in Canada. What you should know If you want to work in Canada, you must understand the following important information: Your employer may need to get a labour market opinion (LMO) from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC). An LMO confirms that there is no Canadian or permanent resident available, and the employer can fill the job with a foreign worker. Some jobs do not require an LMO. Find out if you need one. You must meet the general requirements for entering the country, for staying in Canada and for getting a work permit. This means you may also need a temporary resident visa. A work permit is not an immigration document. It does not allow you to live in Canada permanently. To live in Canada permanently, you must qualify under an immigration category, such as a skilled worker. Livein caregivers who meet certain requirements can apply to stay in Canada permanently. Your spouse or common-law partner and your dependent children may apply to come to Canada with you. Apply for a work permit Find out if you are eligible to apply for a work permit. You normally have to apply for a work permit from outside Canada. Sometimes, you can apply as you enter Canada or from inside Canada, but many of the requirements are the same. The requirements and processing times depend on the kind of work you will do when you come to Canada. If your family members want to work in Canada If you are authorized to work in Canada, your accompanying family members may also be able to work in this country by virtue of the permit you were issued. No other authorization is required. If they intend to work while in Canada, your accompanying family members should find out if they are eligible for an open work permit. Open work permits allow them to work in any job with any employer. An open work permit also means that they may be hired without the employer having to obtain an LMO (the normal authorization required). Certain jobs may require medical checks or licensing from professional organizations. Accompanying family members work permits will be valid for no longer than the duration of your own work permit. Typically, your spouses eligibility for an open work permit depends on the skill level of your job. If the job you are doing is listed as a National Occupational Classification (NOC) 0, A or B, your spouse or commonlaw partner could be eligible for an open work permit. You must also be authorized to work in Canada for a period of at least six months. If you are working in an occupation that requires a lower level of formal training, your spouse may also be eligible for an open work permit through an active pilot project. In addition, your dependent children may be eligible for an open work permit through an active pilot project. Accompanying family members must always apply for their own work permits. They should apply for one at the same time as you, before entering Canada. Should the decision to work occur only after their arrival in Canada, they can apply once they are in this country. If you are the holder of a PostGraduation Work Permit, which is a type of open work permit, your spouse will need to attach a copy of your work permit to his or her application for an open work permit. Your spouse will also need to provide information about your employment by attaching supporting documents, including the following: A letter from your current employer confirming employment or a copy of your employment offer or contract; AND A copy of one of your pay slips.

Lata Mangeshkar Rushed To A Function Against Doctors' Orders

Manna Dey Passes Away At 94

Star-spangled events are becoming more and more exorcises in glamorous head counts than genuine endeavours to celebrate the magic of cinema. An event in honour of Yash Chopra on Saturday in suburban Mumbai turned out to be quite a nightmare for the Nightingale who was to receive the first Yash Chopra Memorial Award. Because of ill health, Lataji was inclined to cancel her scheduled presence at the function. However, the organizers were not the least empathetic to the Living Legend's health status. Says a source close to Lataji angrily, "She was unwell and she informed the organizers that she couldn't attend as the doctors had warned her against public appearances. However the organizers would hear none of it. They reminded her that they had pumped in a lot of money in the event and that her receiving the award in Yashji's memory was the fulcrum of the razzmatazz. Tell me, is the money spent on organizing the event important or Lataji's health

and well being. It is ironical that we claim to honour our icons but actually use them just for photo-options and television cameras." More embarrassment awaited Lataji when star after star was summoned on the stage to shower praise on her in her presence. Says the source, "Some of these gracious stars who spoke about her barely knew her personally." When asked about the ordeal by encomium, Lataji brushed away the health concerns saying, "It was an award in the name of Yashji, so very special. As you know, Yashji loved me like his own sister. He always said, 'Jab tak main hoon Lata mere film on mein gaayegi.' But our rapport went far beyond the professional. He was always there for me whenever I needed him. Yashji is one of the kindest most gracious human beings I've met.I am close to his entire family. Pam Bhabhi (Mrs. Yash Chopra) is as dear to me as Yashji was. I miss him constantly."

The world of Bollywood was a state of utter shock when it woke up Thursday with the news that stated the sad demise of the legendary singer Manna Dey. The 94 year old singer who passed away at 3.50am at Bengaluru had been ailing for some time. Recently he was admitted to a local hospital in Bengaluru following respiratory ailment and renal failure. He was on ventilator support for some time. Looking back at history, not many know that Manna Dey was christened by his parents as Probodh Chandra Dey. Reports have it that his tryst with singing started when he was still in school, wherein during the lunch

breaks, he used to beat the tables of the classroom and sing aloud to entertain his fellow friends. Manna Dey, who started his career in playback singing with the film Tamanna in 1943, has to his credit of singing both for a Bengali and a Marathi film of the same name and storyline - Amar Bhupali. Till date, he had lent his mellifluous voice to more than 4000 songs, majority of them have been chartbusters. In the year 2007, he was conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the country's highest honour in cinema. His body would be kept for final farewell at Ravindra Kala Kshetra.

Govinda Turns Ranbir Kapoor's Salman Khan To Act And Produce Father In 'Jagga Jasoos' Mahesh Manjrekars Next!
Salman Khan: A true blessing in disguise for the needy!, and one can blindly trust Salman Khan if they are friends with the Dabangg actor. Salman Khan yet again proved that he has a soft side and he can go to any extent to help his friends in need. When Mahesh Manjrekar came to him with a script which he wanted Salman Khan to portray on the big screen, Salman not only agreed to act in the movie, but he also told his good friend Mahesh that he would like to produce it too. Salman Khan had earlier worked with Mahesh Manjrekar in the movies like Wanted, Ready and Bodyguard. And if rumours are to be believed, Salman Khan gave a go-ahead to Manjrekars pet project, after making him wait for over 2 years. According to what we have heard, Sallu will not just act in Mahesh Manjrekars film, but will also be producing the movie under his banner Salman Khan Productions. A while ago, we even heard that Govinda will play the lead role in the movie. But later, we found out that Govinda is not a part of the film, and instead the movie will be and outan-out Salman Khan flick. Mahesh Manjrekar not only considers Salman as his only friend in the industry, but also is an admirer of the superstar.

With agreeing to play the role of a father on screen, it seems Govinda is all set to play his second innings in Bollywood. The actor who went dormant for some time, is back with a bang. And this time he will bring his humorous timings to the best. Govinda is playing the role of Ranbirs father in an upcoming movie titled Jagga Jasoos. A friend of Govinda said, The two had a long meeting last week. Anurag explained the character to Chi Chi (as Govinda is fondly called) in detail. Chi Chi loved the subject and has consented to do the project in principle. The film is co produced by Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor. Recently the two of them have started a production company known as Picture Shuru Productions and Jagga Jasoos will be their maiden venture. The film will also be jointly produced by Disney. The source also said, Chi Chi is not playing a serious character. The role will tap his excellent comic timing. When Govinda was asked about this project, he told that he had verbally agreed to be a part of this movie; however he was yet to sign a written

agreement. After a lot of speculation, Govinda has given a green signal to this movie. Jagga Jasoos is a Hindi comedy cum mystery movie. The film is directed by Anurag Basu. The lead casts of the movie are Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. Ranbir will be playing the role of a 17 years old high school teenager. Jagga Jassos will go on floor by the end of October and will release next year. The music of the movie is composed by Pritam. Recently Govinda was also approached to play the role of an antagonist in an upcoming movie by Shaad Ali. The movie will star Ranveer Singh and Parineeti Chopra. It is also known that recently Govinda has undergone hair weaving. Hmm, guess he wants to look a young father exuding his charm to the audience. When Ranbir was asked about him stepping in the production world, he said, My grandfather directed, acted and produced films when he was 21 years old. So there is no age bar for me to produce or not to produce movies. I am already 30 and I am producing a film with Anurag Basu called Jagga Jasoos.

Since then the two developed a friendly bond. Later, Anil also threw a party when Cruise visited India in 2011 for the promotion of his film (MI-4). Talking about the special tip he got from Cruise, Anil said: 'He (Cruise) told me, 'if you want to do the

running shots very well, you need to train your legs.' 'He has a special treadmill for that. In the same way, the running shots of mine that you (reporters) see in the show, I have trained my legs for that,' added the 53-year-old. Directed by Abhinay Deo, '24' airs on Colors channel. In the show, Anil plays the lead role of Jai Singh Rathod, the chief of an antiterrorist unit.

Actor Anil Kapoor, who underwent rigorous physical training for his debut production "24", says he took tips from Hollywood actor Tom Cruise especially for the sequences that required him to run 'To be honest with you, yes, (I took tips from Tom Cruise). Flat Belly Diet Plan

Celebrity trainer James Duigan's Clean & Lean diet plan can help you lose all the unwanted flab. The diet involves cutting out 'toxic' foods that encourage the body to store fat - including alcohol, sugar and processed foods. Meals on James's diet plan are full of fish, lean meat - including turkey and chicken - and fresh, preferably organic vegetables. James says, "My diet works on the principle that your body's natural state is lean and fit, not sluggish and fat. But processed foods and drinks and excess sugar pollute the body, causing fat to cling to the hips, thighs, bum and tummy. However, as soon as you stop doing the wrong thing, your body responds very quickly, and you'll get lean fast. But you have to believe you can do it. It doesn't matter how often you have failed in the past. What matters now is focusing on what you want and taking action." Food rules Make these changes to your diet to lose weight and get a flat tummy fast! 1. Cut the C.R.A.P: Avoid the four main food groups that cause fat to cling to our bodies: caffeine, refined sugar, alcohol and processed foods. 2. But allow yourself a weekly cheat meal: Once a week, enjoy an indulgent meal of whatever you fancy, from creamy pasta to a slice of chocolate cake with cream. As long as you're eating clean, healthy food the rest of the time, an occasional high-fat treat

actually speeds up your metabolism. 3. Take fish oil supplements: They burn fat and supply essential fatty acids. 4. Always have breakfast: Eat within one hour of waking up. If you don't have time for a proper breakfast, just grab a piece of fruit and a few nuts. 5. Don't eat after 8pm: Eating a large meal in the evening when your body is slowing down or sleeping is a bad idea for your digestion and weight. Five food swaps for flat Abs Bad croissants - Full of fat, sugar and no goodness. Milk - Most non-organic milk is filled with hormones Standard yoghurt - Most are full of sugar Margarine - Full of chemicals Beer - High sugar and calories Better wholemeal bread: Fibre is good for digestion Organic milk: Its chemical-free Organic yoghurt: It's free from pesticides Olive oil spread: Full of essential fatty acids Organic cider: Less alcohol and calories. Best spelt bread: No tummy-bloating gluten Organic almond milk: Doesn't contain lactose that can cause bloating Organic full-fat yoghurt: Makes you feel full and is less sugary than low-fat options Organic butter: Natural and additive free Good red wine: Grape skin contains

time to get everything ready. Plus, you won't feel so stressed or rushed, which means you'll be less likely to succumb to a mid-afternoon chocolate bar. Day 1 Breakfast: Omelette made with three egg whites and filled with 75g chopped mixed peppers and a handful of spinach Mid-morning snack: 100g chicken with red pepper, sliced Lunch: One grilled chicken breast, mixed salad leaves, red peppers, green beans and tbsp olive oil Mid-afternoon snack: 100g turkey breast with cucumber, sliced Dinner: 100g grilled chicken breast with steamed broccoli Day 2 Breakfast: Baked chicken breast with a handful of stir-fried kale Mid-morning snack: 100g turkey breast and green pepper, sliced Lunch: Baked haddock fillet with mixed green salad, with tbsp olive oil Mid-afternoon snack: 100g turkey breast with 75g steamed broccoli Dinner: One salmon steak with chopped dill and steamed green beans Day 3 Breakfast: 100g smoked salmon, plus spinach Mid-morning snack: 100g chicken breast with yellow pepper, sliced Lunch: One grilled chicken breast with garden salad and tbsp olive oil Mid-afternoon snack: 100g turkey slices with avocado Dinner: One grilled lamb steak (or two cutlets); steamed broccoli and spinach

What's Causing Your Dry Skin?

1. Winter Weather When the temperature drops, the humidity level plunges too. Dry air leaves skin parched. "Once the weather starts to change, people start complaining of dry, itchy skin. Turning up the thermostat doesn't help, either. Indoor heating strips even more moisture from the air -- and your skin. Install a humidifier in your home to keep air moist. Set humidity at a constant 45% to 55%, and the temperature at a balmy 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Before you go outside in wintry weather, create your own moisture barrier. Protect your most sensitive parts -- lips, face, and hands -- with a scarf and gloves. 2. Steamy Showers Setting the shower to steamy soothes your body, but it won't do your skin any favors. I know it feels wonderful to stand in a really hot shower... but it can dry out the natural oils in our skin more quickly. Standing under that hot spray long enough to belt out your favorite tune is also a no-no. The longer you linger in the shower, the more you dry out your skin. 3. Moisture-Robbing Soaps Don't put just any bar of soap into your shower dish -- they're not all the same. Wash with a harsh soap and you'll send your skin's natural moisture barrier straight down the drain. We recommend using a mild, fragrancefree soap that moisturizes as it cleanses. Bar or liquid doesn't matter, but choose a soap that's specially formulated for dry skin. 4. The Rub-Down Think you need to scrub your skin to get it clean? Toss that old notion, along with your scrubby sponge. Friction strips the skin and enhances the dryness. 5. Losing Shower Moisture Showering bathes your skin in moisture. Scrubbing off with a towel right afterward strips that moisture away. The surface of your skin absorbs some of the water, which will be lost if you don't seal it in.

Michael Douglas Says Relationship With Catherine Zeta-Jones Is 'Up And Up'
Actor-producer Michael Douglas says he and his estranged wife Catherine Zeta-Jones are working on their relationship. During an appearance on `Tonight Show with Jay Leno`, the `Behind the Candelabra` actor says that his relationship with Zeta-Jones "should hopefully be on the up and up", as reported. "Good I hope. I`ve been away for a while but everything should hopefully be on the up and up," he said. The 69-year-old actor also told similar thing in an interview with E! news. "Onwards and upwards," he had said when asked about his relationship with the `Red 2` actress. Recently, a man who was said to be Douglas was reportedly spotted with Zeta-Jones in Greenwich, Connecticut, but the actor denied that it was him. "I haven`t been home yet... I`ve been in New Mexico making a picture called `The Reach` for the last five weeks... So, I look forward to getting home, but that wasn`t me... Must`ve been a look alike." In late August, representatives for both stars said that the couple was taking a break from their relationship. "Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage," they said. Douglas and Zeta-Jones have two children together, Dylan and Carys.

The veteran of three World Cups for South Korea joined the Whitecaps in 2011 after stints in Asia and Europe and was named the club's player of the year last season. "It will be the most memorable game of my life," said Lee, 36, who is set to join Vancouver's front office. "I feel sad, and then I feel happy. "I never thought I could retire in this situation," he added. "So many players get (told to) retire by someone, but I chose all myself when to retire." DeMerit said Lee will leave a lasting impression. "You're never too old for work ethic," he said. "His consistent performance for us for his whole time here has been nothing short of impressive. You always know what you're going to get from him." Sanvezzo, who was named the Whitecaps' player of the year at a ceremony on Wednesday morning, has 19 MLS goals so far in 2013, just one behind both Mike Magee of the Chicago Fire and the Montreal Impact's Marco Di Vaio. The Brazilian-born Sanvezzo has downplayed his goal scoring this season and instead focused on the team results, but with Vancouver now out of the playoffs, will his teammates be trying to set him up even more than usual? "I hope so," he said with a laugh. "It would mean a lot. (When) you're a striker you always want to be the top scorer." Rennie said that he wants to focus on winning Sunday's game, but added that finding Sanvezzo will probably be on

Out Of Playoffs, Whitecaps' Final Game Still Has Intrigue

Despite having their post-season hopes dashed last weekend, the Vancouver Whitecaps' 2013 season finale still holds some intrigue. Sunday's game against the Colorado Rapids at B.C. Place Stadium has important implications in determining Major League Soccer's playoff picture and will also mark the final game in the career of veteran South Korean defender Young-Pyo Lee. Oh, and star forward Camilo Sanvezzo is still in the running for the Golden Boot as the league's top scorer. "We want to make sure we win. I think our fans are coming out expecting that," said Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie after Wednesday's training session. "I think other teams in our conference are expecting that because there is some significance to the game." The Rapids ended Vancouver's playoff hopes on Saturday with a 3-2 victory, thanks to two goals from Gabriel Torres. The defeat marked a disappointing end to a season that saw the Whitecaps record more wins and earn more points than the 2012 edition that qualified for the playoffs. "Ultimately we go out there and we play, because that's what we do," said Vancouver captain Jay DeMerit, who is without a contract for next season. "We've got to make sure we go out there and we give it our best shot, because anything less would be disappointing." The loss in Commerce City, Colo., also signalled that Sunday will be the final time Lee walks out onto a field as a professional.

the players' minds. "He's probably our most natural finisher. He's always a goal threat. He's scored a lot of goals at B.C. Place so it would be great if he could get on the scoresheet more than once," said Rennie. "It would be fantastic if he could end up being the top goal scorer MLS. That would be another massive milestone for the club." Meanwhile, Whitecaps general manager Bob Lenarduzzi said this week that Rennie's future will be decided soon. The Scotsman, who has been with the club since 2011, said he has helped the club make significant progress in his two years, including last season's

playoff berth. "When I came here this team was the worst team in MLS, it was in disarray and it was almost irrelevant in Vancouver," said Rennie. "Now it's a very relevant team and it's poised to be a great team." Notes: Colorado can finish anywhere from first place to fifth place in the Western Conference, depending on Sunday's game and the other results across the league. ... Sanvezzo was also named Vancouver's top overall goal scorer in 2013 on Wednesday. Carlyle Mitchell was named as the team's unsung hero, while fellow defender Jordan Harvey took home humanitarian of the year honours.
