How to choose your
accommodation
Choose the section you are interested
in eg Hotels or B&Bs.
In most sections, there is an
explanation and key to symbols at the
beginning for your use.

Accommodation Guide 15
Accommodation Agencies
If youre short of time, you may prefer to
use the services of an accommodation
agency. The agencies listed will search
for hotels, B&Bs and self-catering
properties by area and price for you.
Staying with a family is an increasingly
popular option with visitors wanting to
sample real London life. The homestay
agencies in this section can locate
and reserve accommodation in a
London home.
Deposits & Advance
Payments
For advance reservations, a deposit is
usually payable, and the amount varies
depending on the booking. The deposit
will then be deducted from the total bill
at the end of your stay. Alternatively,
you may need to give your credit card
details when you make a reservation
to conrm the booking. Many hotels,
particularly the larger establishments,
require payment for the room on arrival
if a prior reservation has not been made.
Major credit cards and some debit
cards are usually accepted. If you are
asked to pay on arrival, it is best to see
the room rst so that you know it meets
your requirements.
Cancellations
When you accept accommodation
offered on the telephone or in writing,
you enter into a contract with the
proprietor. This means that if you
cancel a reservation, fail to take up the
accommodation or leave prematurely,
the proprietor may be entitled to
compensation if the room cannot be
re-let for all, or a good part, of the
booked period. If you paid a deposit,
youre likely to lose it and you may
even be charged an additional fee.
However, no claim can be made by
the proprietor until after the booked
period, during which time every
effort should be made to re-let it.
Any circumstances that could lead
to repudiation of contract may also
need to be taken into account, and
in the case of a dispute, legal advice
should be sought by both parties. It is
therefore in your interest to advise the
management immediately if you have
to change your travel plans, or need to
cancel a booking or leave prematurely.
Comment & Complaints
Accommodation establishments
have a number of legal and statutory
responsibilities toward their customers
in areas such as giving information
on prices, providing adequate re
precautions and safeguarding
valuables. Like other businesses,
they must also meet the requirements
of the Trade Descriptions Acts 1968
and 1972 when describing and offering
accommodation and facilities.
The establishment descriptions and
details in this guide have been provided
by the proprietors, who have signed
a declaration that the information
conforms with the requirements of the
Trade Descriptions Acts.
The prices given in the listings are
estimates, and are subject to change.
Prices, cancellation policies and other
details should be carefully checked at
the time of booking.
We hope you will not have any
cause for complaint, but problems do
inevitably occur from time to time. If you
are dissatised, make your complaint
to the management at the time of the
incident. This gives the establishment
an opportunity to take immediate action.
The longer a complaint is left, the more
difcult it is to deal with effectively.
In certain circumstances,
Visit London may look into complaints.
However, Visit London has no statutory
control over registered establishments
or their methods of operation, and
it cannot become involved in legal
disputes.
