DRAMA COMPETITION FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS RULES AND GUIDELINES

1.0

Introduction The Drama Competition serves as a platform for students and teachers to promote and demonstrate creative ideas in their work. Drama motivates students to use English and therefore improves their command of the language. It is hoped that drama can also instill values amongst students to be more sensitive and appreciative towards local arts.

To encourage students to appreciate drama as it promotes integration and inculcates moral values. To provide the opportunit! for students and teachers to show their talents and creativit! in the art of dramatisation" the usage of English which incorporates script writing# directing# stage management and other technical aspects.

Co&'"tition Ru("$ .1 This competition is open to all students .1.1 with a ma$imum of from %orm & 'optional(

.1.2 from government)aided schools under the purview of the *inistr! of Education. .2 Each team comprises a ma$imum of 1) participants 'including the technical crew+ stage manager# technical coordinator# set and prop assistant# prompter( and two teachers)in)charge. .2.1 It is encouraged that the ma,orit! of the team members act and speak. This will work in favour of the team. .2.2 P"r*or&+nc" $,ou(d " con*in"d to t," $t+-" on(.. . .. ./ -ll team members must be from the $+&" school. The duration of performance is limited to 20 minutes.

The selection of theme is open but should not touch on sensitive issues for instance# race# religion# stereot!ping# politics etc.

0articipating teams are encouraged to produce their own scripts. 1cripts or translated scripts of established pla!s &u$t be adapted and cited. Guid"(in"$ 2.1 L+n-u+-" ..1.1 It is compulsor! to use English language throughout the drama performance. =evertheless# (i&it"d use of certain local *ala!sian registers is allowed. ..1.2 >se of vulgar words and gestures and gruesome scenes are strictl! prohibited. ..1. 2.2 1cripts must not touch on sensitive issues for instance# race# religion# politics# etc.

....1 The use of sets and props should be &ini&i$"d. The management and use of all e?uipment is the direct responsibilit! of each participating team. ....2 1ets and props should not hinder the movement of the team members on stage. .... >se of sharp ob,ects 'for instance knives# keris# etc.(# fire# inflammable and dangerous chemical substances is strictl! prohibited.

Each team is responsible for the setting up '/ minutes( and clearing of sets and props '/ minutes(. 3nl! the 1/ participants are allowed on or behind the stage throughout the drama. ..../ 1afet! of sets and props should be ensured at all times. ....& Drawing of curtains is not allowed between scenes. 2.) Mu$ic ../.1 Each team should have technical assistant's( from the team members to coordinate music and recordings. 2.3 Li-,tin- +nd Addition+( E4ui'&"nt *or S'"ci+( E**"ct$ ..&.1 0articipants ma! bring their own additional e?uipment. @owever# the e?uipment used must be suitable on stage and should not disrupt the flow of the drama presentation. ..&.2 Each team is responsible for managing lighting and special effects. 2.5 D"&"+nour ..2.1 0articipants should not portra! indecent actions or e$cessive movements that are provocative. ..2.2 The presentation should take into account the comfort and safet! of the audience and actors. 2.6 Dur+tion o* Ti&" ..A.1 Time allocated for each presentation is 28 minutes. ..18.& 0la?ues and certificates of achievement will be awarded to the winning teams. Certificates of participation will be awarded to all participating teams. =ote+ The winning teams from the previous !ear ma! participate in the current !ear but the te$t and performance must not be an e$act replica. This concept paper is valid until further notification or revision from the *inistr! of Education and can be used at all levels for competitions organi<ed b! the *inistr!.
