Selection criteria
In addition to the normal hot dip galvanised, Halfen cast-in channels are also supplied in stainless steel for applications requiring increased corrosion resistance. When selecting Halfen channels, officially approved types HTA and HZA are recommended. These are available with a variety of profiles (see Pages 10 - 22) and anchor designs (see Page 28).
To ensure correct installation of the bolt the position of the notch at the end of the shank should be checked. The notch must be transverse to the channel direction.
If the channel is recessed from the face of the concrete e.g. due to insufficient nailing to the formwork or weak formwork, packing shims (see Page 30) should be used over the face of the channel before fixing any other components. A plate washer should always be used under the nut when fixing direct to the face of the channel. Lock washers type SIC (Page 33) provide additional security against turning of the bolt head. Nuts should be tightened to the torque values as stated for the Halfen bolts (Pages 11 - 23).
Material/ finish ordering code: fv hot dip galvanised, providing a minimum coating of 50 mm. Short and cut lengths are galvanised after cutting, so that there is an overall corrosion protection. Steel grades: S235JRG2 (RSt 37 - 2), S235JR (St 37 - 2), S275JR (RSt 44 - 2) or QSt - E 380 wb mill finish (without corrosion protection), same steel qualities as mentioned above
HALFEN channels type HTA 72/48, 55/42, 52/34, 50/30 and 40/22 are hot rolled from a billet of steel.
A4 and
HALFEN channels type HTA 72/49, 54/33, 49/30, 40/25, 38/17 and 28/15 as well as HZA 41/22 are formed on multi - stage cold rolling mills.
stainless steel grade A4, W 1.4571/1.4401 (subject to availability) as per DIN EN 10088. In accordance with German official approval for stainless steels no. Z-30.3-6 only material grade W 1.4571/1.4401 (grade A4) is allowed for A4-Ank.A4 stainless steel fixings in reinforced concrete structures. A4-Ank.A4 = both channel and bolt anchors in stainless steel grade A4 = standard for stainless steel channels ranging from HTA 28/15 to HTA 54/33 and HZA 41/22. Also available with welded stainless steel anchors: channels ranging from HTA 28/15 to 50/30 (special fabrication, to order). HALFEN bolts for increased security during assembly : The new S - shape of the head provides additional security for correct locking of the bolt inside the HALFEN channel, avoiding any risk of turning during assembly, even when differing profile widths occur due to manufacturing tolerances. During the period of change to the new bolt shape both bolt types are supplied. Patents pending. All HALFEN bolts type HS, HSR and HZS are supplied with hexagonal nuts. Specification: nuts: DIN EN 24 034 shaft and thread of the HALFEN bolts: DIN EN 24 018 According to official approvals for HALFEN channels HTA, HZA and HZA DYNAGRIP the HALFEN bolts galvanized gv/S can be used instead of galvanized fv in applications, where this type of corrosion protection is reauired (approval certificate, table Corrosion Protection Requirements).

HALFEN CHANNELS
Filler selection and fixing to the formwork
e tyren Polys
The polystyrene bead filler has been the standard for HALFEN channels for many years. On countless projects around the world, it has provided protection against ingress of concrete grout into the channel. The polystyrene is dense and fills the channel completely, even between the lips. After striking the formwork, removal of the filler is simply done using an appropriate tool . Note: Due to the production process, the polystyrene bead filler may not be completely tight at both ends of the channel, notably in the larger profiles. However this does not affect the useable length of the channel, since HALFEN T-head bolts should not be located beyond the last anchor (= 2,5 cm from the channel end, see also p.5).
2. HALFEN Combination Strip Filler (to order, code Kf) Material: Polyethylene
If HALFEN channels are required to be quickly cleared of the filler along the entire length of the channel, after removing the formwork, HALFEN supplies channels with combination strip filler at a small extra charge.
Subject to alteration
After striking the formwork the combination strip filler is simply pulled out of the channel. In order to avoid rupture of the strip filler, an appropriate tool should be used as shown.
Fixing to Formwork
Care should be taken to ensure that the correct type of HALFEN channel, as specified on the drawing (channel size, material finish, anchor type, length) is adequately fixed to the formwork and in the required position, so that it cannot be displaced when pouring and compacting the concrete. This ensures that after removal of the formwork the channel face is flush with the concrete surface. Fix to timber formwork with staples or nails. For fixing stainless steel HALFEN channels stainless steel nails type ENA 28/65 are available to order. Fix to steel forms with bolts, dowels etc. (see below).

Notes to pages 12 - 24
A4 = material 1.4571/ 1.4401 (grade A4) ; A2 = material 1.4301 (grade A2). Stainless steel HALFEN channels ranging from HTA 28/15 to HTA 54/33 and HZA 41/22 have generally bolt anchors made in stainless steel. HALFEN channels HTA 72/48 and 72/49 are only supplied with mild steel grade St37-2 anchors, anchor design A = welded. The load capacities quoted correspond to official approval. For distances between load points and allow. loads in concrete B 35: see page 24. Not part of the official approval. Reduced allow. loads as indicated (or consult Halfen). Order code: HTA-V . . / . . Values have been calculated according to the CC-procedure. Anchor design: A = welded anchor (I - anchor); B = bolt anchor, see also page 28. Channels will be delivered as available unless specified on the order. Where simultaneous loading occurs, in both pull out and transverse shear or longitudinal shear parallel to the channel axis, the resultant load should not exceed the value of F = 5 kN for single loads or F = 3,5 kN for load pairs. Load transmission only by frictional resistance. For load bearing constructions with forces in longitudinal direction HALFEN channels type HZA in connection with toothed HALFEN T-head bolts HZS or hot rolled HALFEN channels in connection with nibbed HSR bolts should be used.
A2-50, A2-70, For channel HTA 28/15 the allow. bending moment in the bolt for the A4-50 A4-70 channel length L > 250 mm should [Nm] [Nm] [Nm] be limited to max. 30 Nm. 1,8 3,8 For channel HTA 38/17 the allow. 4,4 9,4 bending moment in the bolt for the 8,7 18,7 channel length L > 250 mm should 15,3 32,8 43,7 be reduced to 72 Nm. 38,8 83,3 When bending occurs in addition to 111 8.8
75,7 130,9 162,3 pull out loads then the allowable loads should be determined as follows:
FZ all. FZ (1 - M/ all. M)
all. FZ = allowable pull out load (direct or angled pull out) all. M = allow. bending moment FZ = actual pull out load M = actual bending moment
Variable bending stresses: for curtain walls with variable bending stresses (e.g.due to changes in temperature) the load amplitude sA should not exceed 50 N/mm2 above or below the mean value sM , in relation to the nett tensile area of the bolts.

For shear loads acting away from the edge of the concrete the distance ar may be reduced to 0,5 x ar or 5 cm minimum, provided reinforcement is fitted as shown in the diagram on Page 26. For pull out loads at an angle of 45 or shear loads acting towards the edge of the concrete reinforcement is required if the edge distance is between 75 and 100 mm (see Page 26). Reduced edge distances ae for maximum allowable loads FZ and FQ for Halfen channels in slender columns
When using Halfen channels HTA 28/15, 38/17, 40/22 and 40/25 the end edge distance ae as given in the Table on Page 27 can be reduced for applications in slender reinforced concrete columns, provided two additional links (fig.3) are installed immediately above and below the length of HTA channel. The distance from the edge of the concrete column to the centre of the Halfen anchor must be at least 42 mm. (Details as given in Test Report No. II 4 - 14 426 of the FMPA Baden - Wrttemberg dated 26.10.1984).

HALFEN brickwork restraint systems are designed to tie all masonry, both wall connections (fig.1) and external cladding masonry (fig.2) to load bearing concrete walls and columns. Because of the sliding capability of the brick ties within the channels the risk of the masonry cracking is greatly reduced.

The ideal technical solution to fixing profiled metal sheets to concrete using Halfen sheet fixing channels type HTU and selfdrilling screws has now become an industry standard for this detail.
Screw fixing the profiled metal sheeting is simple and economic, especially when self drilling screws are used. The shape of the welded anchors ensures a safe and rigid fixing. The Styropor filler prevents the drill or self - drilling screw being damaged by the concrete or the anchor. The rigidity of the profile ensures a flush finish with the concrete for the profiled metal sheeting to fix to. HTU was developed in collaboration with the Institute for the Design and Construction of Sheet Metal Products (I.F.B.S). The German Construction Technology Institute in Berlin has officially approved the profiled metal sheet fixing channels type HTU under certificate No. Z - 21.4 - 84.

Advantages: The 92 angle ensure a tight fit to the formwork at all times = clean joint with the concrete and no seepage of concrete fines between the formwork and the corner guard. The U - shaped steel reinforcement anchors do not clash with the corner reinforcement thus simplifying erection of the reinforcement cage. The steel reinforcement anchors provide optimum bond. Cost - effective due to automated manufacture. Usually available ex stock.

For restraining timber roof trusses to concrete beams or reinforced concrete floors using either continuous Halfen channel type HTA or short lengths of Halfen channels cast into the concrete (see Page 16). The size of Halfen HTA channel, the timber fixing strap and the nails used will depend on the nature of the applied load (e.g. uplift from wind). The basis for calculation and measurement is taken from: 1. DIN 1055 Part 4, Aug. 86, Section 6.2 and 6.3 2. DIN 1052 " Timber Structures", April 88, Part 2, Section 3 and 7. The timber fixing straps can either be fitted to one side or both sides of the timber beam.
Typical fixing of timber beam using type HNA nailing ties on cast in HALFEN channels
The allowable load capacity (Fallow) can be taken from the following Table. If restrained at one side only the beams must be secured against overturning (e.g. by nailing to the timber decking).

HALFEN rafter shoes type HFS 6/12 are used in modern timber structures to take the horizontal forces imposed by rafter beams and timber roof trusses. HALFEN rafter shoes have the following advantages: Reduction in design time, since only the size and position for casting in the Halfen channel is required. Structurally determinate due to the pin jointed design of the rafter shoe. Statically tested, Test Certificate No. 3 P 30 - 26/91. Not complicated, hence no costly and time consuming concrete edge chamfering profiles required. Simple, straight forward erection of the roof structures achieved by: a) Base plate adjustable for angle b) Adjustable nailing straps can accommodate rafter width from 60 - 120 mm. c) Adjustable in the longitudinal direction of the rafter by 15 mm. Adjustment along the length of the Halfen channel enables various rafter spacings to be easily accommodated. Good corrosion protection offered by the hot dip galvanised finish. Horizontal forces are safely transmitted back to the concrete structure when using the officially approved Halfen channel type HTA. Care should be taken during erection to ensure the serrated washer is correctly engaged with the base plate. The line stamped on the back of the serrated washer must be at right angles to the direction of the slotted hole.
28
Example 1
Rafter shoe type HSF 6/12
If required, standard design calculations as well as a test report from the Gesamthochschule Wuppertal, Laboratorium fr Baustoffprfung are available on request. The maximum allowable force in the rafter is limited by the safe working load of the rafter shoe selected. Tests have shown an ultimate load of 50 kN on average. In instances where the imposed loads are greater than the safe working load (approx. 1/3 of ultimate load) the spacing of the rafters must be reduced. The min. edge distance ar (see table) can be reduced, when the actual load is below the all. load (see table P. 26). The edge distance of the Halfen channels to the outer edge of the concrete should be 170 mm. The Halfen channel must be cast in flush with the concrete surface. If necessary shims/ washers should be used.
