Skip to page 43 for a report on interior accessories, including a rather nifty iPad desk stand and light by Flos and some magical print work from the graphic artists of the Harry Potter films. EDGE has re-designed the Portico shop on level 2 of the National Gallery, responding to a brief to nd ways to increase turnover from the existing store footprint of 193 sq m. The new concept, developed by EDGE, will see product densities reduced, with a new product mix presented to customers in more comprehensible and dynamic product groupings, set within an overall environment which aspires to be a best-in-class retail offer that engages with and inspires customers, in much the same way as the Gallerys own art collections. The space was replanned rst, with a new
centralised island till freeing up more perimeter space. Fewer oor-xed units were proposed, allowing a better ow of customers through the space and fewer bottlenecks. Along the perimeter, a series of over-sized wall bays with much more layering and depth creates a more dynamic display with a richer visual story. Retail furniture has the feel of artists equipment with postcard units, for example, based on easels, plus display tables with classic trestle table proportions. New mid-oor loose display furniture allows for more compelling displays of objects and artefacts.

The Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest have has had a public area redesign by MKV. A theatrical lobby is met with calmness in the hotels bar. DESTINATION BAR
RPW Design has completed the re-design of the A Bar, a chic new cocktail bar in the InterContinental Amstel, Amsterdam. Set within the InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam the bar has been designed to attract a younger crowd without alienating the very loyal following that only the best of the best hotels enjoy. As well as walking the tightrope between appealing to a younger audience whilst retaining its traditional customer base, Jan Wilson of RPW Design acknowledged that one of her biggest challenges was the A Bars limited back-of-house space, and its connections to the rest of the building. Part of her strategy to overcome these challenges was the introduction of a striking light installation, comprising eight individual light fittings created from hand-blown glass. After tendering, these were manufactured to Jans specification by a supplier based in Austria. The fittings turned out to be one of the most challenging areas of the design. The smoky blue of the light fittings is reflected in the colour of the leather used for the bespoke chairs, adding to the contemporary lux feel of the A Bar. Quality craftsmanship and materials are used throughout, from the bronze chain mail curtains and solid timber broad plank floors, to the polished gold finish back bar and feature shelving units.

BUDAPEST BEAUTY
The public areas of the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest have undergone a remarkable transformation by MKV Design. The Design teams courageous vision for the public areas firmly places the hotel in the present, enhancing the dramatic scale of the interior yet also creating a sequence of unique spaces that are inviting and exciting for overseas guests and local people alike. Key to the designers re-planning of the lobby was the replacement of the staircase leading up to the first floor function and meeting rooms. A modern interpretation of the conventional grand staircase is now one of the first elements that greets guests upon arrival, a magnificent staircase which curves around the edge of the lobby and is as much a work of art as functional stairway. Constructed in an elegant brown stone against a glazed-over Crystalux wall, its decorative and perforated metal balustrade, reminiscent of the Art Nouveau styling for which Budapest is famed, sweeps up and wraps around the first floor where it looks over the lobby atrium. Blue Fox The Bar is intimate and clubby in ambience with its dark walnut timber floor and tables together with richly toned upholstery to the seating. Lighting is low and discreet, supplemented by the play of reflections from mirrored nooks and columns. The deep glow of the cobalt blue acrylic bar surround, inset with mesh and suggestive of a soda siphon, completes the sophisticated vibe of the space. Located within the central atrium, The Living Room is a modern interpretation of Budapests traditional coffee house culture. This is a deeply comfortable area and a quiet contrast to the theatricality of the lobby.
A door creates the first impression of the room it leads into, setting the tone of the interior inside, Beautiful, hand crafted solid timber Longden doors, manufactured in Britain, add quality and elegance to modern flair or traditional splendour whilst meeting performance criteria for fire resistance, smoke control and sound reduction.

WHEN IN ROME
Bathe as the Romans do. Versital takes bathrooms into the 21st century
Versital was established in 1988 by a British manufacturer and offers beautiful, high-quality bathroom surfaces in a wide range of marble and granite nishes. Versital is used to create fabulously high-end surfaces that are ideal for domestic and commercial bathrooms and washrooms. VERSITAL IS VERSATILE It can be fashioned into shower wall panels, vanity tops and shower trays. Its available in 90 different colourways and offers a range of natural-look marble and granite nishes, and a brilliantly contemporary sparkle nish. In fact, Versitals marbled nishes are so realistic they have been used in the Roman Baths in Bath. One of the most popular of Versitals nishes is Arabesque, a white marble-look surface threaded through with black veins that has the richness and look of Carrara Marble. Speciers and designers are also installing the popular Noir Reect, a black nish shot with sparkling silver ecks to create stunning effects. Another popular nish that screams elegance and sophistication is the Graphite granite. Colour consistency of Versital is a huge plus. Unlike natural stone where variations in cut and sourcing of the material can create inconsistencies of nish, Versitals colour consistency and nish is assured. 100% WATERPROOF AND NONPOROUS Unlike natural marble and stone, Versital is 100 per cent waterproof and stain resistant

making it the ideal material for use in the bathroom. Whereas marble and granite are naturally porous and need to be treated to ensure theyre water-tight, Versital products come nished and ready for use. In addition, unlike natural stone products, Versital doesnt stain, even when subjected to astringent bathing and cleaning products. MANUFACTURED TO SPECIFICATION Another attraction for designers is that Versital is manufactured to specication. Unlike natural marble and granite, where there is often a high degree of wastage after cutting, Versital can be made to measure. Its also only needs ordinary wood-working tools, rather than masonry tools and, if necessary, can be cut on site with minimum effort and mess. Drilling and xing into Versital, too, is also a whole lot easier than into traditional tiled surfaces. BESPOKE SHOWER TRAYS Versitals most popular product is its made-to-measure shower trays. Manufactured to exact design specications in any shape or size, available in the full colour palette. These are a brilliant alternative to traditional wetrooms. Being manufactured in one piece, there
are no seems or joints to cause weakness or leakages so theyre waterproof and water-tight. Theyre also being used in larger shower areas and for bathrooms for clients with mobility issues; a designer recently ordered a three metre long Versital shower tray for a client. Versital shower trays are also safer than those made of natural products. Unlike shower oors manufactured from natural stone, all Versital shower trays have a category 2 certied anti-slip base, making them suitable for all commercial installations as well as domestic. Unlike tiles or other natural bathroom surfaces, Versital is actually warm to the touch and works in conjunction with underoor heating systems. MULTIPLE BASIN WASHROOM VANITY TOPS As well as domestic bathrooms, Versital is ideally suited to the Boutique hotel market, offering a luxury nish and high-end look. Versital vanity tops with multiple basins are also perfect for commercial washrooms and bathrooms. DESIGNER PROFILE
BLANCA SANCHEZ
very visual level as a picture editor had a big impact on me and I think it is very much reected now in how we at Halo present our projects. What is it about the arts and interior design that fascinates you so much? It is just so visual. If you distil it down in terms of the effect it can have on you, design can affect your mood, which in turn affects your life. This is a big impact and a huge responsibility on the part of the designer. The idea that we are changing a part of peoples lives when we design for them is a fantastic feeling. The way they want to live and feel can be reected in the design and that is why I love my job so much. Where is the majority of your work based and have you ever worked or lived anywhere else? Much of our work is based in London, Surrey and the Home Counties but we have recently worked on a ski chalet, which took us to Courchevel. I previously lived in Barcelona for a year where I was surrounded by the works of Antonio Gaudi. I also grew up visiting my family in rural Spain during every school holiday. Both of these experiences had a massive affect on me. Barcelona is bursting with architecture and you cannot help but be inspired by the likes of Gaudis Cathedral. He very cleverly took something very traditional and classic and fused it with elements of nature, making it a hybrid of old and new and now essentially, timeless. How has this helped to shape and inuence your ideas on design? I like the idea of using good raw materials. I like to take natural elements and see what I can do with it. Stone in particular is such a beautiful, natural material and really is a joy to work with. Re-establishing that link with nature is something I enjoy doing through my projects, bringing the outside in and challenging conceptions of certain materials. How would you dene your design style? I dont specically have one design style and this is quite deliberate. I design for the space and the client but naturally I would say that Im quite eclectic and have an organic sense to my style. Im also quite emotionally involved, I like to know how people feel about materials, colours and spaces and I like to bring raw materials into contemporary spaces. What was your rst ever design commission? I cant remember my first ever design commission but one of the earlier projects I worked on at Hill House Interiors was the penthouse apartment in the old Harrods warehousing building in Trevor Square in Knightsbridge. The scale of the project and the skeleton style of the building was impressive. It was industrial meets glamour. What was your biggest ever design commission? It would have to be a 12,000 sq/ft new-build commission on St Georges Hill in Weybridge, Surrey. I am in fact still working for them, having met them before they knocked down their old house, through the build and now as they are taking their time creating the home of their dreams. It has been three years and weve been through the whole process so far together, including structural and internal elements. Being such a big project it has somewhat taken over the lives of the owners and so, a complete trust within the designer/client relationship was needed. Im proud to say that we have established a very strong working relationship. Both myself and the client have learned a great deal during this process and if I was to pick an advocate for Halo Designs I would say it is this client. If you hadnt become an interior designer what would you be doing? Id be working for the World Wildlife Fund or a similar company or charity. I love the idea of helping animals who are struggling and Id like to think that this is a path I could have trodden. Im a great believer in humans working with nature, not against it. www.halodesigninteriors.com
reflection of some inspiration and clients must trust that we can best interpret their wishes into a workable and imaginative space. Which design school did you train at and how do you feel design schools have evolved since you were studying? Have a post-graduate degree from the Chelsea College of Art and Design and have also studied Spanish and History, all of which I believe have helped to shape my ideas and expressions as a designer. I actually came into interior design a little later in my career but this has certainly allowed me to take in a mature and considered approach to my designs. When I was in education there was a great deal of hand drawing, which I really loved. Everything now is very much CAD related so its a different technical ball game all together. I
think one of the biggest gems I will take away from my time studying is that there is a whole world to be discovered and used as inspiration. Experience makes for a very well rounded designer. The opportunity to be in that environment was so exciting, a truly amazing experience. I actually think that it has been my experiences since design school that have really dened me though. Education was the launch pad from which I could go and discover. Have you ever dabbled in other forms of design not necessarily linked to the world of interior design? Outside of university my rst job was with Ebury Press, part of Random House. I was an assistant to an editor and was responsible for editing the text and artwork for publications such as Victoria & Albert Museum and Kew Gardens. Being submerged in the art world and working on a

WELCOME HOME
Mariel Brown, Head of Trends at Seymourpowell explores the home trends that will be impacting our clients most sacred of spaces in the future
Home is a highly emotive word. At its best it is a concept that signies our own little corner of the world where we feel confortable and in control. Yet the world is changing, as a result, so too is our home environment. The tranquil home In recent years the home has taken an imperative roll as a space that provides its occupants with sanctuary. As political, financial and environmental instability weigh heavily on our minds, we increasingly desire a tranquil space where we can regain our emotional composure. This trend is expressing itself in multiple ways throughout the domestic environment. We are witnessing a renewed interest in the creation of quiet spaces, for example home libraries or writing desks. The bathroom is arguably the most solitary and personal space within the home. Here we are seeing a softening of geometry as ceramics manufactures respond to this trend with product forms that feel comfortable and cocooning. In home furnishing we can see the trend for tranquillity being expressed in colour palettes; all the big design fairs of 2013 have been awash with muted pastels and calming neutral accessories to help turn the home into a peaceful haven. The self-expressive home The economic downturn has stagnated many housing markets across the globe. Interestingly one of the silver linings to the dark cloud of austerity has been that our houses have become more homely. During the boom period prior to 2008, many viewed their house as an investment to be sold on. They decorated conservatively to create inoffensive interiors that would not polarise potential buyers. Now this has changed. Without the prohibitive style restrictions of an impending sale, people have become far more expressive in their living spaces. They are letting their personality come to the fore. One of the key manifestations of this trend has been the revival of curation, where people gather together and show off the objects that are most precious to them. In the Selfexpressive Home, novelty is a key way of gaining social kudos. As the Internet has made access to so much so easy, the hard to come by has become prized and celebrated. Along with exhibiting our personality through curation, we are also expressing it through our in home activities. 'Maker Culture' is growing fast. This is spurred on by online tutorials and facilitated by ecommerce sites that make it easy to sell products. As a result hobby rooms are on the rise as people carve out personal space within the home to indulge in the things they love. The responsive home Technology is an unstoppable, omnipresent force in our everyday lives. Smart portable devices have brought connectivity into every room in the home. This entwining of the high tech with the domestic environment is only set to continue as everything from our TVs and fridges, to our cars and vacuum cleaners, become more intelligent and connected. The annual consumer electronic fair (CES) in Las Vegas is widely regarded as the place to gain a glimpse into the future of technology. Here it was clear that our homes are becoming more reactive and responsive. The self-quantified movement, where people track and monitor personal data to enhance their performance, has expanded into the domestic environment. Standout examples were intelligent, energy saving thermostats that learn our habits to improve temperature control in our homes, and devices that monitor the wellbeing of our plants and pets so that we can better care for them. These new releases hinted at a future where our homes will be able to pre-empt our needs and respond to them accordingly with minimal interaction required from inhabitants. www.seymourpowell.com @Seymourpowell

e all work differently from one another and each day is different for each individual. We need a variety of spaces to work in; areas for quiet, focus and undisturbed work, spaces for casual or formal meetings and areas for collaboration. This last area is becoming increasingly relevant in todays workplace where technology is advancing at such a pace; it is releasing us from our previously tethered workstations. This enables us to interact and engage more with others and be more innovative. Companies are increasingly paying heed to this and attempting to facilitate these interactions through the clever design of space. Steve Jobs recognised this at Pixar where he redesigned the ofces to position all of the toilets in one location, forcing each of his employees to meet others. And ideas were borne as serendipity ruled. He named it
