Air Conditioning & Refrigeration
u Heating, airconditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers held about 270,000 jobs in 2004; with almost half of them working for plumbing, heating, and air conditioning contractors. About 15 percent of mechanics and installers were self-employed u Because of the increasing sophistication of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems, many employers prefer to hire those with community college or technical school training or those who have completed an apprenticeship. u Job prospects for heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers are expected to be excellent, particularly for those with training from an accredited technical school or with formal apprenticeship training, and especially in the fastest growing areas of the country. u Employment of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to increase 18-26 percent through 2014 for all occupations through the year 2014. As the population and stock of buildings grows, so does the demand for residential, commercial, and industrial climate-control systems.
