As the population and stock of buildings grows, so does the demand for residential, commercial, and industrial climate-control systems.

Danville Community College offers a two-year Diploma program, for individuals interested in employment as an air conditioning and refrigeration technician, and three one-year Certificate programs for those interested in servicing equipment, or specializing in summer air conditioning and refrigeration or winter air conditioning. Both beginners and those presently working in the field can benefit from these programs.

    u Median hourly earnings of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers were $17.43 per hour in May 2004. u The top 10 percent of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers earned more than $27.11 per hour. u The middle percent of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers earned between $13.51 and $22.21 an hour. u Apprentices usually begin at about 50 percent of the wage rate paid to experienced workers. As they gain experience and improve their skills, they receive periodic increases until they reach the wage rate of experienced workers.
