More Reading The Param Vir Chakra is the highest honour bestowed upon a soldier of the Indian army. The Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is Indias highest military decoration awarded for the highest degree of bravery or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy, similar to the British Victoria Cross, US Medal of Honour, or French Legion of Honour. It can be, and often has been, awarded posthumously. Param Vir means Bravest of the Brave. (Param = Highest; Vr = Brave (warrior); Chakra = wheel/medal). The Param Vir Chakra was established on 26 January 1950 (the day India became a republic), by the President of India with effect from 15 August 1947 (the date of Indian independence). It can be awarded to officers or enlisted personnel from all branches of the Indian military. There are many stories of brave soldiers who have died protecting their country. One such story is that of Capt Vikram Batra. Read on

The Param Vir chakra On 20 June 1999, thirteen Jammu and Kashmir Rifles regiment was given the task of capturing Point 5140. Capt Vikram Batra, in an audacious move, decided to attack the enemy position from the rear along a sheer cliff face. Undaunted by fire, the brave officer, followed by five of his men climbed up and hurled two grenades at the enemy. As three enemy soldiers came out, he single-handedly engaged them in close fire fight and killed all three. Mortally wounded, he now realised that time was running short. He needed to think and act fast. Wasting no more time he went back and called forward his men, regrouped them and led them to capture Point 5140 which was an enemy strong hold. He died serving his beloved country. For his display of bravery and leadership of the highest order in the face of the enemy, Capt Vikram Batra has been awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously.
