In 2014 the National Day of Prayer

Sometimes It Takes Courage . . .

There are many courageous people in the world. They could be your next-door neighbor
or your favorite president.
Courageous is defined as: having or characterized by courage: brave <a courageous soldier> <a courageous decision>
There are also many modern day heroes to cast your accolade nets.
I was sent this story in 1999. You will probably change your mind, when you read about
a true hero.
So you think Im courageous? she asked

Yes I do.
Perhaps I am. But thats because Ive had some inspiring teachers. Ill tell you about
one of them. Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at Stanford Hospital, I got to
know a little girl named Liza who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her
only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her five-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies
needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and
asked the boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for
only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, Yes, Ill do it if it will save
Liza.
As the transfusion progressed, he lay in a bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all
did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile
faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, Will I start to die
right away?
Being young, the boy had misunderstood the doctor. He thought he was going to have
to give her all his blood.
Yes, Ive learned courage, she added. Because Ive had inspiring teachers.
This weeks bottom line: Just like the TV commercial, Stop and Smell the Roses.
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down
and listen. - Winston Churchill
(This weeks story was written by Dan Millman from Chicken Soup for the Soul)

A Night of Country to be Presented

By Miami County Fair & Troy Foundation
Special Guest to be Covingtons Own Clark Manson
The Miami County Agricultural Society and the Troy Foundation are delighted to announce on the
evening of Saturday Aug. 9, an all-star line-up of country talent. Chase Rice, with special guests Sam Hunt
and Clark Manson, are sure to bring you an evening of star-studded entertainment.
Singer/songwriter Chase Rice has applied the words of his high school football coach, Bobby Poss, in
a series of accomplishments that others merely contemplate. Hes been the starting linebacker for the
University of North Carolina; a member of a NASCAR pit crew; a touring artist who sold out strings of
venues across the country without a record company, a manager, or a song on the radio; and a co-writer
of a record-setting, many-times multi-platinum single, Florida Georgia Lines Cruise. There are few
Nashville artists who can match Rice for his drive, his relentless energy, and his confidence. And even
fewer who are positioned as well to succeed.
Sam Hunt is quickly becoming one of Nashville's most talked about young talents. After finishing his
football career as quarterback for the University of Alabama Birmingham, Sam made the move to
Nashville to try his hand at songwriting. Shortly after settling into the Nashville scene, he was given the
opportunity to write full-time for a publisher. Using the work ethic and discipline he accrued as a ball player, Sam began to develop his craft and quickly gained recognition as a gifted songwriter.
Sam made a name for himself in the country music community co-writing Kenny Chesney's #1 single,
"Come Over, as well as upcoming singles "Cop Car"/Keith Urban and "We Are Tonight"/Billy
Currington. He is currently writing/recording songs for his debut album due out this year. Sams sound
owes its roots to country music, but has an eclectic style thats based on pop, urban, folk, and R&B influences.
Growing up in Covington, Clark Manson wanted nothing more than to become, not only a country
singer, but a songwriter, as well. From the start, Manson was hot, winning the Newport Music Hall Battle
of the Bands, advancing to the Texaco Country Showdown State Final, playing the Indiana State Fair
and so it began.
Clark has a nice blend of classic rock swag with midwestern country charm to create a dynamite musical concoction that explodes with poppy melodies and rocking guitars. Matt Gross, Entertainment Chair
of the Miami County Fair, states, This will be a very high energy show featuring headlining star Chase
Rice, up and comer Sam Hunt, and a very popular homegrown entertainer, Clark Manson. Their combined
sounds will most definitely resonate with Fair-goers.
Tickets are available by calling 937-335-7492; going online at www.miamicountyohiofair.com; or in
person at the Fair office. Through the week, the Fair office will be open for ticket sales Wednesday through
Friday, 9 a.m. til 5 p.m.
Ticket prices are $12 stadium and $20 track. Gate admission to the Miami County Fair is $5 per person for ages nine and over.
Mark your calendar and come to the Miami County Fair August 8-14!

9-1-1 Dispatchers Train for Mental Crisis Calls

Thirteen 9-1-1 dispatchers from Darke, Miami, and Shelby Counties, including Sidney and Greenville
police dispatchers, completed an all-day training seminar in recognizing and dealing with emergency calls
from persons with mental illness or in crisis. The training was conducted by the Tri-County Board of
Recovery and Mental Health Services at the Boards Marianne Helmlinger Training Room, Troy, on March
13.
The program consists of a review of mental illness types, causes and symptoms, structured de-escalation techniques, and scenario-based training. The main presenter was Jodi Long, LISW, LICDC, Director
of Clinical Services and Evaluation for the Tri-County Board. Speaking on de-escalation techniques from
the perspective of a law enforcement officer was Sgt. Stephanie Black of the Tipp City Police Department.
Also addressing the class was Meredith Grosvenor of Troy and volunteer for the National Alliance for
Mental Illness (NAMI) chapter in Miami County, who related the experience of mental health crisis
involving 9-1-1 dispatchers and police officers from the perspective of the person in crisis.
Long said the purpose of the training is to provide information and techniques for handling crisis calls
involving a person in or experiencing a mental health crisis. Its a small fraction of the total number of
calls dispatchers handle in any given shift, but the stakes may be very high, such as in a threatened suicide, where the safety of the caller or responding officer or EMT may depend on a quick and accurate
assessment of the situation.
In the scenario-based training, staff from the Tri-County Board, from SafeHaven, and from Darke
County Recovery Services placed simulated 9-1-1 emergency calls from persons exhibiting various symptoms and severity of mental health conditions. Each training participant had to quickly engage the caller,
assess the situation, and resolve the crisis.
Training for 9-1-1 Dispatchers is a companion course to the Crisis Intervention Training (CIT)
Academy for Law Enforcement Officers. The four-day intensive training will be April 28-May 1. The CIT
Academy and companion courses are presented at no charge by the Tri-County Board, with additional support from NAMI Ohio. The training is funded by local levy funds.
For information about the Crisis Intervention Team training or companion courses, contact Brad Reed,
Director of Community Resource Development, 1100 Wayne St., Troy, or visit the Boards website at
www.mdsadamhs.mh.state.oh.us.
