Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises; was written by Frank Miller from February to June in 1986 and published by DC Comics. The Batman franchise was brought back from the depths of being a laughing stock and changed into a serious contemporary form and in turn, a multi million dollar film franchise. Synopsis Gotham City is ravaged by crime, no street is safe. With Batman retired, Gotham is again the number 1 crime capital of the world, with master criminals running the city and small time thieves committing crimes wherever they can. Gotham is on its knees with no hope, can this chain of events bring 55 year old Batman Bruce Wayne, out of retirement and save the city once more, or is this too much for him. The Batman Batman has no relative superpowers; he relies on his own scientific knowledge, detective skills and athletic prowess. He also has a very good friend in the name of Lucius Fox; a co worker of whom has a very good knowledge on how to build things, these things include; The Bat Mobile, Carbon Fibre wings which enable him to glide with the wind, the grapple hook and The Bat a flying craft. These things, along with his sheer power and knowledge on how to fight, this makes him, arguably the greatest comic book hero. His costumes has varied throughout the ages, but the most distinctive remain the Scallop Hem Cape, a mask covering his face featuring a pair of bat like ears, black suit with the Bat emblem on his chest and as always, the utility belt around his waist. What sets him aside from most superheros is his most unwillingness to take life, if he can help it, he will keep the criminal alive and make them answer to justice, this is what makes him one of the most remarkable heroes that has ever been created. The other characters The Batman comics sport many characters, the most notable being Robin and The Joker so I will explain about each. Robin was introduced into issue 38 of the original comic book series by Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson and garnered a very positive critical reception and later featured in its very own comic books, while still appearing in the Batman comics. Afterwards the characters second incarnation came in 1983 up until 1989 (Frank Miller) where he was consequently killed off by The Joker on the comic book: A Death in the Family. So this brings me on to The Joker, The Joker was introduced in the very first Batman comic books in spring 1940 by DC Comics. He is a master criminal with a sadistic sense of humour which plays a part of in all his victims deaths, the main origin of the Joker is when he falls into a tank of chemical waste which bleaches his skin white, his lips red and his hair green, resulting in him turning insane. How was the book written? It was written in a graphic novel style and it has a lot more pictures than it does words, each page has at least 10 pictures on it with at most a few words describing the scene and maybe a speech bubble. The book itself has a strange layout, sporting six different books altogether, but the first book does start at the beginning and has a linear story line throughout. The pictures themselves are drawn in a cartoon way, a comic way, which really suits the style and makes it more appealing and unique, due to it being the first book of its kind, it drew a lot of attention when it was drawn like that, hence making it the most popular comic book of all time.

Does it have any crisis points? The book has two crisis points; these are the points in which the protagonist turned villain, Harvey Dent, has his accident leaving his face brutally disfigured resulting him turning insane and of course, into a villain. This is the first crisis point, the second comes when Harvey Dent kidnaps the Commissioners (police chief) son and The Batman must go and fight Harvey Dent and rescue the Commissioners son and in the process, the Commissioner actually killed Harvey Dent. Due to the reputation Harvey Dent had and how the public loved him, they agreed the public couldnt know that he turned into a criminal to prevent uproar so they said the Batman killed him, hence from then on, the Batman becoming a vigilante. Whos point of view is the story written from? The story is written in first person from the characters point of view, so each character speaks, there is no second or third person; it is always from the characters point of view in the Batman books. Theres much more that I can add to that but there are six books in total and each of them are written in the first person. Who is the target audience? The target audience is primarily men, however women do read the books as well, but the reason why not as many women read the books is because of their strong male input that the book has. Most of this was changed later on in the book series, as more and more women got introduced, such as BatGirl and in some cases, Robin was a girl and finally in some books, Catwomen was in it. The age of the audience will vary rather largely, it could range from a really young age due to the pictures, and right up to the old age with people being comic lovers so it really does vary and impossible to narrow down and as for the socio economic status, I believe it will be more category B and all the way down to E, this is due to the stories appealing to everyone and it is still a book at the end of the day but with pictures, so if that person is interested in the Batman stories, they will love the book, no matter the form.
