Nec Cable Bending Radius

This document provides minimum bending radius requirements for various types of insulated cables during permanent installation. It lists the minimum bending radii for both single and multiple conductor cables without metallic shielding or armor, which depends on the thickness of the conductor insulation and overall cable diameter. Minimum bending radii requirements are also provided for twisted pair instrumentation cable, power and control cables with metallic shielding or armor, and rubber jacketed flexible portable cables. The radii requirements aim to limit sidewall pressure on the cables during bending.

The following are the minimum values for the radii to which insulated cables may be bent for
permanent training during installation. These limits do not apply to conduit bends, sheaves or
other curved surfaces around which the cable may be pulled under tension while being installed.
Larger radii bends may be required for such conditions to limit sidewall pressure. In all cases the
minimum radii specified refers to the inner surface of the cable and not to the axis of the cable.
The minimum bending radii for both single and multiple-conductor cable with or without lead
sheath and without metallic shielding or armor are as follows:
