Photodesign
Description: A Photodesign activity with a quote about photography and the color scheme
defned.
Date: 5/24/14
Course Instructor: Cory Kerr, Comm 130
Programs/Tools: DSLR Camera, Photoshop
Objective: Use principles of photography, camera use, and color.
Process: I decided on the camera and grass, recognizing that these were complementary
colors. I decided to take a photo using the leading property. Te camera lens points to the
opposite corner of the photo, where I ended up placing a quote over a transparent box so
that the text stands out better. I used the pen tool to create the red triangle and green lines
in the bottom right corner of the photo.
Flier
Description: Tis was one of our frst projects using Abode InDesign for Comm
130. Tis allows us to use the principles of design that we have learned thus far in
the course.
Date: 5/10/2014
Course Instructor: Cory Kerr, Comm 130
Programs/Tools: Adobe InDesign
Objective: Become familiar with InDesign and create an attractive event ad using
design principles
Process: I started out with four sketches of the fier, but found that I varied from
them. Tough I kept the idea of having a photo as the background for the entire
page, I decided to place the text diferently than originally sketched. I used
Adobe InDesign to put this fier together. I have become somewhat familiar
with the sofware through work, training myself through online tutorials, and
instruction received during class. I placed white text on a transparent black box
which allows for contrast that makes the text stand out. I placed solid black
bars on the lef hand side of the transparent box and the logo in order to have
repetition in my design. Te title and body copy are a serif and san serif font,
respectively. Tis adds an additional contrasting element.
Description: A montage project using masking and layers in Photoshop.
Date: 6/1/14
Course Instructor: Cory Kerr, Comm 130
Programs/Tools: Adobe Photoshop
Objective: Use Adobe Photoshop to create a montage.
Process: I looked through images online that were of diferent subject matter
and composition until I found two that I thought could go well together. Using
Photoshops lasso tool I was able to crop the picture of the girl with a large feathered
edge. I placed it on top of the picture of the fghter jets and created a mask to use the
brush tool and make part of her features transparent. I made a white rectangle with
the rectangle tool and made it transparent using the opacity options on the layers
panel. I then found several quotes and inserted them into the poster separately. I
shared each of them with diferent people to get their opinions on which they liked
most. Eventually I narrowed down my choices to this quote by our former president
and military man Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Event Ad
Description: An advertisement for a fundraiser Education for Malala, a campaign
done for the International Childrens Literacy Fund.
Date: 5/18/2014
Course Instructor: Cory Kerr, Comm 130
Programs/Tools: Microsof Word, Adobe Photoshop
Objective: Create an advertisement for an event using primarily Microsof Word.
Scan a picture and format it for ad.
Process: I used a scanner and Photoshop to prep the jpeg for use and then
completed the ad entirely in Word. I used the crop tool to cut out the background
of Malalas picture, the shape tool to make the bottom portion of the fier grey, and
text boxes to place the copy.
Logos
Description: Create three logos for the same brand.
Date: 6/8/14
Course Instructor: Cory Kerr, Comm 130
Programs/Tools: Adobe Illustrator
Objective: Create three logos using Adobe Illustrator
Process: Tis was one of my frst ventures with Adobe Illustrator. I used the text
tools, pen tool, shape tools, and eyedropper a lot. Te text and shape tools were
used for the frst two logos. Te halo in the frst logo is a shape with just a stroke.
Te angel wings were the more involved of the three logos. I took a picture
of angel wings of of the internet and used shape tools, the pens add/subtract
anchor points tool and the direct selection tool to trace and fll one of the wings
with shapes. Ten I combined all of the shapes with the pathfnder and made
some fnal adjustments. I duplicated and refected the wing and afer trying out
diferent colored/stroked text and fnding that it was hard to read, I placed the
wings so they overlapped. It made the text a lot easier to read.
Business
Card
Description: Business card set for someone afiated with secondhand store.
Date: 6/14/14
Course Instructor: Cory Kerr, Comm 130
Programs/Tools: Adobe Illustrator, printed fron InDesign
Objective: Create business card set in illustrator. Create separate logo from
three of Logos assignment.
Process: I did almost everything in Illustrator and then copied it into InDesign.
I selected a font for the large letters, created a halo using the elliptical tool,
grouping, expanding and the shape builder tool. I chose smaller font and
positioned it near to the large K to spell the entire name. Right aligned font
on opposite side of card. Used same colors as in letterhead.
Letterhead
Description: Stationary for someone afliated with this secondhand franchise.
Date: 6/14/14
Course Instructor: Cory Kerr, Comm 130
Programs/Tools: Adobe Illustrator, saved in InDesign
Objective: Create stationary using a new logo
Process: I did almost everything in Illustrator and then copied it into InDesign.
I selected a font for the large letters, created a halo using the elliptical tool,
grouping, expanding and the shape builder tool. Te stroke on the stationary is
just a stroke with the color from the halo copied.
Web Page
Description: I designed a web page to show of my most recent logo.
Date: 6/29/14
Course Instructor: Cory Kerr, Comm 130
Programs/Tools: TextWrangler, Internet browser
Objective: Add text to and design web page using CSS
Process: Confession time: I have worked with HTML and CSS before.
Granted, its been a number of months, but it defnitely helps to be doing a
refresher rather than learning all of this for the frst time. I played around
with a few things. I didnt like some of the stuf that the demo.css fle
had, so I took a good deal of it out. I even took out the border they had
but ended up adding another one later, this time with some style (get it? I
used border-style.no? Ok).
Because my logo has the colors it does, I thought about using a lighter
shade of them on the webpage. Tat didnt work out, so I took out all
background color instead. I took out the border and h1 header and let
everything get aligned to the lef of the page. I out a picture of a brown
couch fxed in the bottom right corner but eventually took that out afer
I foated the logo to the right and the couch was being overlapped by text
once I moved it to the lef.
I used complementary colors in this design. Te body copy, links, and
border are all the colors of the logo. I gave the logo some white space
around it and put some space between the border and edge of the browser
as well.
Brochure
Description: I created a brochure for the nonproft Christian ministry Wonganis
Hope. I am friends with the founders brother and had heard about her organization
a few years back. I recently spoke with Beka for an article I was writing and learned a
little more about what theyre about. Tis charity seeks to help the people of Malawi,
especially the children. Te Wonganis Hope orphanage is on a few acres of land and
their goal is for it to be relatively self-sustaining. Tis would cut back on costs greatly
and perhaps strengthen the self-reliance of those involved. For this project I had to
write my own body copy and create a new logo for the company.
Date: 7/13/14
Course Instructor: Cory Kerr, Comm 130
Programs/Tools: Adobe InDesign
Objective: Use InDesign to create an attractive brochure, create new logo for
organization company
Process: I mostly used Adobe InDesign, dabbled in Illustrator for the logo, and used
Photoshop to save an image that I used a few times in the brochure.
