the themes addressed by Charles
Dickens in the 1800s.
Dont be a Dickens (Saturday)
So what happens when you take
the themes of Dickens
and transpose them
to a modern day
situation? Do we
work as a community
to support the less
fortunate, or is it a case
of charity begins at home
and justice begins next door?
Ill be beggared! (Sunday)
Credit is a system whereby a person
who can not pay gets another
person who can not pay to
guarantee that he can pay. Dickens
words are as true today as ever they
were. Can his novels themes still
provide a way of explaining the gulf
between rich and poor?

Welcome to one of the most
colourful festivals on the
Medway events calendar.
Charles Dickens spent five of his
childhood years in Medway from
1817 to 1822. He returned for the last
13 years of his life, dying at Gads Hill
in 1870.
We have an undisputable lasting
connection with the national legend
that is Charles Dickens. His links, with
Rochester in particular, make us very
proud to be hosting Rochesters
Dickensian Christmas 2009.
Each year the festival gets bigger and
better and this year is no exception.
As time goes on we are expanding
the festival to encourage Christmas
shopping and other seasonal
activities that will help the event to
continue to grow.
Of course, we are looking forward to
the activities that have made
Dickensian Christmas such a part of
the south-east festival scene, but this
year you can also enjoy special theatre
performances for all the family, magic
lantern demonstrations, Victorian toy
workshops and much more. Oh and
for 2009 we have our very own
reindeer taking part, a must for
children to see.
We hope you enjoy our Christmas
tribute to Dickens and enjoy the
festive wonders that Rochester
has to offer.
