The league plays 3 games per day 6 days a week (Monday-Saturday) in 5 Cactus League stadiums. This year, the league adds the new Cubs Park in Mesa as a venue, joining returning sites Camelback Ranch-Glendale, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, Scottsdale Stadium and Surprise Stadium (two teams).
The Major League affiliations for each AFL team are as follows: Surprise Saguaros-Surprise Stadium (Mariners, Red Sox, Reds, Padres and Rangers); Glendale Desert Dogs-Camelback Ranch (Orioles, White Sox, Tigers, Dodgers, Brewers); Peoria Javelinas- Surprise Stadium (Braves, Indians, Royals, Cardinals, Rays); Mesa Solar Sox-Cubs Park (Cubs, Angels, Athletics, Blue Jays, Nationals); Salt River Rafters-Salt River Fields (Diamondbacks, Rockies, Astros, Marlins, Twins) and Scottsdale Scorpions-Scottsdale Stadium (Mets, Yankees, Phillies, Pirates, Giants).
AFL team is comprised of 5 major league organizations working cooperatively. Each organization is required to assign six of their most promising Major League prospects to the league. The roster includes right-handed pitchers Matt Anderson, Matt Brazis and Stephen Landazuri, catcher John Hicks and infielders Patrick Kivlehan and D.J. Peterson. Kivlehan was on the also a member of the Peoria Javelinas in 2013.
Current High Desert Pitching Coach Andrew Lorraine will serve as the Saguaros pitching coach, while AA Jackson trainer B.J. Downie will serve as the teams trainer.
Seattle Mariners minor league infielder D.J. Peterson played for the U.S. squad, while outfielder Gabby Guerrero represented the World team in the 16th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 13 at Target Field in Minneapolis as part of All-Star weekend. Peterson started at 1B and in the 6th position in the lineup, going 1-for-2 with a double. Guerrero hit 7th as the World teams starting DH, going 0-for-2 at the plate.
The Mariners have had 31 selections to the Futures Game since its first began in 1999. Six players on the current 25-man roster (+DL) played in the Futures Game in the past: Robinson Cano (2003-04), Corey Hart (2002), Felix Hernandez (2004), Logan Morrison (2010), James Paxton (2011) and Michael Saunders (2007). Brad Miller was selected to the 2013 U.S. Team, but was unable to play due to his promotion to the Major League squad. Cano (All-Star: 2006, 2010-13, Futures Game: 2003 & 2004), Hart (All-Star: 2008 & 2010, Futures Game: 2002) and Hernandez (All-Star: 2009, 2011-13; Futures Game: 2004) are each one of 115 players to have competed in both the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and the MLB All-Star Game.
