thismethodyourMacOSvirtualmachinewillbemorereliable,andyouwillbeabletodobasicthingsfromtheOperatingSystemsuchasreboots,shutdownsandthesimple
AboutmyMac.Theonlydownsidesofaristhatitseemsyouwontbeabletosetscreenresolutionsoutsideof640480,800600,1024768,12801024and1440900.

Whatdoyouneed?
MacOSXIsuggesttobuyanoriginalretailDVDofSnowLeopard,butfortesting,youcangoogleforSnowLeopardretailDVDtorrent.Therearesomemodifications
outtherebytheHazardteam,butIhavehadsomuchtroubleduringinstallationsthatIsuggesttheoriginal(oracopy)oftheretailDVDs.Imusinga10.6.3ISOimage.
iBoot for booting up Snow Leopard on the Virtual machine, since the retail DVD isos are not capable of booting themselves. You can download it from here

Legacy 10.6.8 kernel the same as previous, if you are updating to 10.6.8 you will need a 10.6.8 kernel. You can find it at osx86.net forum

1)CreateVirtualmachine
OpenyourVirtualBoxinstallationandclickonNew.ItwillaskforanameandOperatingSystemtype.NameitasyouwantandselecttypeMacOSXandversionMacOS
X. You can use Mac OS X (64 bits) if you will want to boot the 64 bit kernel. Set a minimum of 1024 MB of RAM to it (or more if you have enough RAM on your
computer)andaminimumof20GBofHardDisk.
Then, in the virtual machine Settings, the only mandatory thing is to disable the Enable EFI option in the System entry. You can also set the video memory to 64MB and
enable3Dacceleration.

3)Firstuse
Afterthefirstreboot,ifyoudontdonothing,youwillnoticethatthevirtualmachinewillnotbootagainbecauseofthedisabledEFI.YouwillhavetouseiBootagain.Butthis
time,yourdiskwiththeinstallationwillappearontheiBootmenu.

SelectitusingthearrowkeysandpressEntertobootyournewinstallation.Ifyouarehavingtroublesbootinguporyoudidusea32bitvirtualmachine,beforepressingEnter,

4)Dosomecleaning
AstypicalinHackintosh,somesuggesttodisableautomaticupdatenotifications.SincewewillbeabletocorrecttheEFIproblem,andtheinstallationisprettystock,maybeitis
unnecessary. However, I recommend to switch off all update notifications. To do that, just click on the topleft Apple logo, go to System Preferences, and in Software
Update,unselectCheckforUpdates.

Also,thereisanannoyingfeatureinMacOSXcalledSpotlightwhichallowsausertofindfilesinthesystemveryfast.Howeverthatcomeswiththecostofhavingasystem
service(mdworker)alwayscheckingforfilesandmodificationsonfiles,keepingtheCPUandHardDiskusagehigh.Gotoaterminal(Applications>Utils)andrunsudo
mdutilaioff(withoutquotes)todisableit.Itwillaskforyouradministratorpassword.

Ifyouhavenotalreadydownloadedthe10.6.8updateCombo,youcanusetheSafariapplicationtodownloadit.Butifyouhavealreadydownloadedityouwillhavetocopy
thefiletothevirtualmachine.SinceVirtualboxdoesnothandle.dmgfiles,andsoyoucantmountthefilelikeifitwasavirtualCD,youwillhavetocopyit.Ihavenotfounda
betterwaythanusinganUSBpentocopyallfilesfrommyLinuxhosttotheMacOSXguest.Whileyoureatit,theLegacykernelfiletoo.
WhenyouhavetheupdatecombofileontheMacOSX,justdoubleclickittostarttheinstaller.Installtheupgrade,itwilltakequitesometime,andintheend,itwillaskyouto

Afterinstallingthelegacykernel,youcantrytorebootthesystem.Probablyitwillfail,justshutdownthevirtualmachinewindowandexitVirtualBox.
6)SetupVirtualBoxEFI
In my previous post about the installation of Mac OS X in VirtualBox, we had to install a boot loader because of the unsupported EFI. However, now we want to instruct
VirtualBoxtousetheEFItobootthesystem.Inyourhostmachine(rememberthatwehaveexitedVirtualBoxinthepreviousstep),gotoaterminalandexecutethefollowing:

whereXYZisyourvirtualmachinename(keepthequotes).ThisinstructsVirtualBoxtousea64bitEFI.Ifyouareusinga32bitvirtualmachine,andifefi64doesnot
work,trytousejustefiwithoutthe64.Then,executethefollowing:

Thissetsthevideoresolutionto1024768.Youcanchangetoanyofthefollowingnumbers:0=640480,1=800600,2=1024768,3=12801024,and4=1440900.I
havenotbeenabletosettheresolutiontoothersoutsidethislist,butyoushouldsearchalittlebitmore,anddropmealineofyoufindanything!

It kind of depends on your need, but if you need to boot a different kernel architecture, on Mac OS X, find the file
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist. Search for the Kernel Flags key and set (without quotes) arch=i386 for the 32bit architecture or
arch=x86_64forthe64bitsarchitecture.Reboot,andnexttimeyouboot,youwillhaveadifferentkernelarchitecture.Justguaranteethatyouuse64bitifyousetupa64bit
virtualmachineinthefirstplace.

amnowrunning10.6.8Serveronmymid2011mini.Overthecourseoflastthreedays,thevirtualmachinehasbeenbootingupfine(around1520times)butIhave
had two kernel panics. So, as author wisely warned, this is not a perfect solution but it may work well enough. As a bonus, the Chimera bootloader included in
Multibeastdefaultsto12801024resolutionwhichmatchesmymonitorexactly.ifstep6doesnotworkforyouthenChimeramayofferastepupfrom1024768in
iBoot.
IwouldliketogetthisEFImethodtoworksoanysuggestionswouldbegreat.hugethankstoJooforputtingthispagetogether,thisisincrediblyhelpful!
