    Citizenship 9

    OUTLINE:

    This year, we will be working on
    numerous aspects of citizneship and how
    it can be useful in developing a positive
    school culture. You will be assigned to a
    very important role within your school,
    which will provide you with the
    necessary tools in becoming strong
    citizens and leaders. These tools will help to develop a positive sense of school community and will
    aid you in becoming responsible, upstanding citizens. There will be many school wide projects that
    you will be involved in as well as classroom activities to help you become an independent leader.
    Participation is mandatory for this course. Self-awareness of ones actions is a must. As mentioned
    above, you have a special role in this school, and setting a good example is essential in developing
    your citizenship qualities. Additionally, attitude and effort will count as major components for this
    course.


    Expectations
    All students will:

    NOTE: As a citizenship student, you are not only required to follow the school rules, but you are
    required to be an example to other students, teachers and community members. If at any time you are
    not being a positive example to others, then you may lose the privilege of being in this class.


    Mark Breakdown:

    Participation 40%
    Projects/Activities 30%
    Volunteer/Service Hours 30%

    Particpation:
    This portion of your mark will be reflective of your demonstration of specific citizenship skills. It
    will also involve your improvement in your ability to communicate with others including your peers,
    your teachers and other members of the community. As well, as a citizenship student, you will be
    required to participate on a daily basis in class. A participation rubric will be followed to assess your
    habits and willingness to participate in any classroom situation including assignments and activities.
    As well, part of your participation mark will require you to work as a hallway monitor for some of
    the elementary students for a week during the semester. We will discuss the details of this assignment
    later in class.

    Projects/Activities:
    Throughout the year, we will be doing many projects and activities focused on leadership, goal-
    setting and service. These projects and activities will be based on helping you become a better citizen
    and helping you set achievable goals. You will be given enough time in class to complete your
    assignments. Students will also be given a ONE-CLASS grace period for handing in a late
    assignment or project with a penalty of 20%. After that, the assignment will be considered a zero.
    Part of being a great leader is being prompt and following through on assignments!

    Volunteer/Service Hours:
    As a citizenship student, you will be required to complete 5 hours of volunteer service throughout the
    semester. These opportunities can come in a variety of manners and we will discuss the options in
    depth in class. If you already volunteer within the community, these hours may contribute towards
    your 5 hours for the class.
