Good preparation is key to a successful negotiation, according to Rupert Mack, Head of
Management Studies at Denton College.
Being underprepared can mean you fail to reach agreement with the other party- thats
why it is important to spend some time beforehand thinking about what you ideally want to
get out of the negotiation, and what are you prepared to accept. Prioritize your aims- whats
your main aim? What secondary goals do you have? Are you flexible about what you want
to achieve? If you cant achieve your ideal goal, what would be an acceptable end to the
negotiation for you- that is the best alternative to a negotiation agreement (BATNA)?
The next step is to consider the approach you will take- will you negotiate face to face or on
the phone? Will you be on your own or as part of your team? What will your role be?
Also try and find out as much as you can about the person or team you will be negotiating
with- who are they? Whats their role in the company? What might they want out of the
negotiation? And what might their objective be to your proposals? If the other party is from
a different culture, think how their way of negotiating might be the same as, or different
from your own. Consider how you might try to build trust and understanding, and offer
compromises and find common ground- crucial not just for the success of this negotiation
but for building a long term business relationship.
It can be useful to run through your ideas with a colleague, ask their advice, and so on. If
you are negotiating on behalf of others, perhaps a group of colleagues take time to
understand their concerns so that you can accurately represent their views.

Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP)
What is needed is a better approach to help the poor, an approach that involves partnering
with them to innovate and achieve sustainable winwin scenarios where the poor are actively
engaged and, at the same time, the companies providing products and services to them are
profitable. This collaboration between the poor, civil society organizations, governments, and
large firms can create the largest and fastest growing markets in the world. Large-scale and
wide-spread entrepreneurship is at the heart of the solution to poverty. Such an approach
exists and has, in several instances, gone well past the idea stage as private enterprises, both
large and small, have begun to successfully build markets at the bottom of the pyramid (BOP)
as a way of eradicating poverty.

The economic pyramid of the world is shown in the figure. As we can see, more than 4 billion
constitute the BOP. You will discover companies fighting disease with educational campaigns
and innovative products. There are organizations helping the handicapped walk and helping
subsistence farmers check commodity prices and connect with the rest of the world. There are
banks adapting to the financial needs of the poor, power companies reaching out to meet
energy needs, and construction companies doing what they can to house the poor in
affordable ways that allow for pride. There are chains of stores tailored to understand the
needs of the poor and to make products available to them.

The strength of these innovative approaches, as you will come to appreciate, is that they tend
to create opportunities for the poor by offering them choices and encouraging self-esteem.
Entrepreneurial solutions such as these place a minimal financial burden on the developing
countries in which they occur. There is significant untapped opportunity for value creation
(for BOP consumers, shareholders, and employees) that is latent in the BOP market. These
markets have remained invisible for too long. It is natural for you to ask this: If all of this is
so obvious, why has this not yet occurred?

Corporate or organizational imagery is a subject that will come to increasing prominence in a
world where product or service differentiators are difficult to come by. The stakeholders
rules and their longstanding, dynamic opinions count. Stakeholders view corporations and
organizations through a series of filters, filters that have the power to direct purchasing and
investment decision-making strategies. Although this has always been the case, globalization
has changed the nature of these filters making it harder for organizations to reconcile their
numerous, real-time images. Globalization has done to the corporate world what the ocean
frequently does to cliffs during storm surges; it has exposed parts that had been hidden for a
long time. Real time reactionism realized through imagery has the ability to significantly
affect the earnings potential of the contemporary corporation. Depending on ones
perspective this creates a significant risk or opportunity; either way it demands attention.

Reputations are formed and influenced primarily by character and diverse images, both of
which are in turn affected by reputation. The reputational cycle does not have a beginning or
an end; in essence it cannot be created (unlike energy, it can be destroyed) but only
influenced. I have argued that the best way to influence reputation is to look at how it is
constructed and to strive to outperform the competition in seven key arenas.

Superior performance in these arenas coupled with essential transparency leads to enhanced
corporate reputation and twenty-first century competitive advantage.

Redrawing the Corporate Stakeholder Map and Engagement Plan
The third change in this section may seem like a fairly ordinary strategic change, but is in
fact a crucial change to the corporate mindset on reputation management: redrawing the
stakeholder map. If stakeholder engagement is corporate speak for talking and listening to
people who matter to us and our business, then it makes sense to categorize these people
and map them out in some way to understand how they are all interrelated. But, what comes
out of this exercise is often a flawed model for truly understanding and dealing with the
organizations audiences.

At a recent PR conference, Philip Dewhurst, then Head of Communications for British
Nuclear Fuels Limited, said that a stakeholder is anyone who has the potential to bugger up
your business.8I agree, but the next step in this train of thought is often wrong because, at
the head of the stakeholder list, you will almost always find governments and campaign
groups. They, after all, are the most visible and dangerous potential opponents. The
campaign groups will be under the banner NGO, which itself might be subcategorized into
headings covering the Environment, Industrial Relations, Human Rights and so on. Also on
the stakeholder list will be a Media category local, regional, national. There will be a
section called Employment, which has, amongst others, the sub-categories of Trade
Unions, Head Office Staff, and Other.

Company Xs stakeholder list
We at Company X have many stakeholders and we want to
engage with as many of them as possible. We must prioritize,
of course, but that does not mean going to those that are easily
identifiable. Our priorities are as follows:
Priority 1 The people without whose active support we cant
operate: Customers, who buy our products and services;
Employees, who make and sell our products and services;
Shareholders, who finance the company; Local communities,
who support our continued operations where they live
Priority 2 The people who hold power over us: Governments,
who can withdraw our license to operate; Regulators, who can
report perceived or real failings and can withdraw our license
to operate
Priority 3 People who influence those in the above categories:
The media, who have some control over our public image;
Interest groups, who also talk to key audiences; Experts, who
can have an influence in their field over the above audiences
Priority 4 People who want to see us fail: Campaign groups,
who oppose what we do and what we stand for; Competitors,
who have no interest in seeing us succeed (although they
might not always want us to fail, lest we take the whole
industrys reputation down)

management of a corporate?
