5 Why I Wrote This Book
Why I Wrote This Book
M y heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer (Psa. 45:1).
I have for some time wanted to compile a brief look at what is commonly called, The Lords Prayer.
Strictly speaking, the Lords Prayer really appears in Johns Gospel, chapter 17. Yet, the principles which appear in Matthews and Lukes gospels regarding prayer are commonly understood in this way.
This is by no means an exhaustive study of the subject. Nor does it attempt to simply rehash what has already been ably written by others. Else, why another book on the subject?
It is, rather, my desire to glean from these familiar verses a program for prayer that will enable us to effectively commune with God. We desire to have our needs met by Him and also to develop the ability to stand in the gap for others. This we can do if we can understand the privileges, possibilities and responsibilities which are ours in Christ Jesus.
I have elected to finally put these thoughts into print while ministering in crusades in Athens and Orchomenos, Greece.
Help from Heaven 6 Many of the illustrations included will be taken from the results and experiences of these meetings.
I believe it was John Wesley who said, it seems that God has limited Himself in what He can do for humanity by our prayers.
Martin Luther is said to have spent three hours daily in prayer. Dr. David Yonggi Cho has followed his example. One of my mentors spent six or more hours a day in prayer and shook the world for Christ.
A man on his knees is taller than the trees.
If these brief meditations spur you on to a newer and better communion with your Heavenly Father, I will have achieved my goal. May Gods richest and best be yours.
Rev. Joseph Kostelnik, Ph.D. Athens, Greece September, 2000 7
The Voice
H owbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come (Jn. 16:13).
I wasnt planning on hearing the audible Voice of God. As a matter of fact, the idea had never entered my mind, even though Id been a Christian and in the ministry for over 20 years.
I had awakened in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. As I made my way back into the bedroom, I heard an audible voice. It seemed to be that of a male, about 30 some years of age.
It spoke only one word: Pray.
A Confirmation
Its funny how the Lord has to remind us of things, isnt it? And when He speaks in an audible voice it makes one wonder if we have any spiritual depth at all. In any case, I considered it a real wake-up call. You see, it wasnt the first time the Lord had reminded me of the importance of prayer in my life and ministry.
I have to be candid and admit it is a lot easier for me psychologicallyto minister the Word in preaching or teaching. The Voice Help from Heaven 8 I suppose Im somewhat of a spiritual workaholic, and its a bit difficult to quantify the work one has done in prayer compared to the number of sermons preached or lessons taught.
The Voice of the Lord in the middle of the night was simply another reminder to emphasize prayer, regardless of how I felt about it.
Years earlier, in 1982, I was privileged to meet with one of my mentors, just prior to my going to Australia to serve fulltime as a missionary-evangelist. I met with him for an hour and was able to quiz him on various ministry matters. This man had ministered for over 50 years in 103 countries, had written over 500 books and trained over 500,000 individuals for the ministry. Needless to say, I expected him to prophesy over me or give me some esoteric words of wisdom for the mission field.
I was a bit puzzled as he seemed almost rude, not meeting my eyes and looking absent-mindedly around the room. He was even doodling on a little scratch pad on the desk. As I unobtrusively glanced at the desk he seemed to shift the notepad toward me. He was printing a wordslowlyone letter at a time, and then underlined it three times.
The word?
P-r-a-y-e-r.
In retrospect, I realized that this was his message to me, not the answers to the various questions I considered important. And he gave it to me in an odd manner I would never forget.
Divine Leading
That was an important experience for me. You see, I had been instructed by the Lord to see this brother before I left the States for fulltime missionary work. I was in Australia with my family for about six weeks of meetings in the spring of 1982. 9 While worshiping the Lord at L.I.F.E. Bible College in Strathfield (near Sydney), the Holy Spirit spoke to me of the necessity of my meeting with this man of God. I was able to do so in September.
It was during that same time period that I received prayer from the brother at the conclusion of a morning Bible study. He urged as many as felt led of God to simply file by him and shake hands with him in faith. I did.
Again, I had expected him to lay hands on me, prophesy or do something unusual (a year earlier, he had prophesied Id go to Australia in a way I would never expect or would even desire; that was fulfilled to the letter). I was a bit disappointed when nothing of the kind took place.
Living By Faith
It was then that the Holy Spirit challenged me. Did you do what the man of God said? He asked. Yes, I replied, inwardly. He continued, Did you believe you received? I thought for a moment. Yes, I responded.
It was at that moment that my right palm began to tingle and burn. I asked the brother what it meant. He said, Pray about it, son; the Lord will show you. I did and He did. You can read it in Matthew 16:19.
That minister went to Heaven in February of the following year. My ministry changed as the gifts of faith, the working of miracles and gifts of healings intensified in manifestation.
I believe something was imparted to me. Im praying that through this book, something will be imparted to you.
Are you willing? The Voice Help from Heaven 10 11
The Pray-er
L ikewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered (Rom. 8:26).
Before we begin our study, its important that we understand the difference between a pattern for prayer and actually praying.
Many in the Body of Christ recite The Lords Prayer religiously as an excuse for praying. It is all the prayer some have. I have been very disappointed to see, even in charismatic circles, books of prayers believers are encouraged to recite in order to get their needs met. This is not Gods will nor His plan for us.
Asking Amiss
When the disciples said to Jesus, Lord, teach us to pray, in Lukes gospel, they asked amiss according to James (Ja. 4.3). Had they asked Jesus simply to teach them to pray, He would have, no doubt, immediately gone on to describe the importance of the ministry of the Holy Spirit (Lk. 11:13). Unfortunately, they added the phrase, according as John taught his disciples (Lk. 11:1). So, He accommodated them and gave them some prayer principles first.
The Pray-er Help from Heaven 12 However, if we read the entire passage in context we find He went on to urge them to ask and keep on asking, seek and keep on seeking and knock and keep on knocking for the Gift of the Holy Spirit.
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him (Lk. 11:13).
In other words, this was the answer to their original request. To possess the Holy Spirit is to possess the Pray-er. The principles He gave the disciples are to be prayed not said. It is only as the Holy Spirit has right of way in our lives that situations are changed for the glory of God. Anything else is simply ritual, rote and religion.
Revelation
This was illustrated just the other night here in our hotel room. My son, Solomon and I were praying in advance of the two Sunday meetings when he had a spiritual vision (I Cor. 14:6). He wasnt reciting the Lords prayer, but communing with God. Suddenly the Holy Spirit interrupted his dialogue with a night vision followed by a prophecy. The next morning our first meeting saw a standing room only crowd and over 30 individuals were saved, a dozen prayed for concerning healing (one lady testified her deaf ear opened up), and another 60 or so agreed with me for a miraculous deliverance of some kind. It is not difficult to believe these results were due, in part, to the intercession of the previous night.
I will include his own account of this experience later in this book, in the chapter entitled, Protection.
The important fact at this juncture is that the Holy Spirit is ready, willing and abundantly able to assist us in prayer to the glory of God.
13 As I have mentioned in another book, either during or as a result of praying in the Spirit (other tongues), the Spirit of the Lord can minister to us: prophecy, a word of knowledge, a revelation or a teaching (I Cor. 14:6). We can then either share these with others in the Body of Christ, or simply act on them personally to see Gods Kingdom manifest in the midst of earthly situations.
Apart from the ministry of the Holy Spirit, these prayer principles of Jesus are simply a ritual. We need to treasure and encourage our relationship with the Lord in prayer. The Pray-er Help from Heaven 14

Position
A nd he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven (Lk. 11:2).
Many people dont realize that God can be our very own Father. This concept was unknown to the Jews, individually. As a nation they could speak of Yahweh as their collective Father, but it was unthinkable for an individual Israelite to affirm such a relationship.
The Fatherhood of God is the beginning of all successful prayer. Jesus told us to pray, Our Father, the One in the Heavens (Gk.). In other words, there is more than one father we may be related to. This disturbs some folks. Yet is it biblical nonetheless.
I mentioned during a sermon once that just because God answers a persons prayer doesnt necessarily mean He is that persons Father. Jesus said His Father ministers to all alike, regardless of their relationship to him, at least in a limited fashion (Mt. 5:45).
Similarly, in the area of spiritual visions and experiences, just because the Lord appears to someone doesnt mean theyre particularly spiritual. Jesus appeared to Paul while he was in the process of persecuting the church (Acts 9:4)! Belshazzar saw the Hand of God writing a message on the wall personally to him and Position Help from Heaven 16 he was one of the wickedest potentates ever to rule Babylon (Dan. 5:5).
While my dad was living, I often illustrated this concept in this manner. If you asked my father a question, hed answer you. If you needed help and he could assist you, he would, if you requested his help. But those facts dont make him your father!
Relationship
Relationship is everything; particularly in the matter of consistently answered prayers and miraculous deliverances.
Jesus spoke of :
Two Masters (Mt. 6:24). Two Fathers (Lk. 11:2; Jn. 8:44). Two Spirits (Lk. 11:13; Lk. 9:55) Two Vines (Jn. 15:1) Two Shepherds (Jn. 10: 11) Two Destinations (Mt. 25:46) Two Kingdoms (Jn. 18:36)
Although we are children of God by virtue of creation, we are prodigal children unless and until we return to Fathers house through the New Birth (Jn. 3:3). Once we are born again, all of the privileges and responsibilitiesincluding answered prayer are ours in Christ Jesus!
A Heavenly View
Settle it in your heart that your help and hope are in Heaven, not on earth. Stop looking for natural solutions to spiritual problems. Stop trying to move supernatural mountains with carnal weapons. Allow the Fatherthe One Who lives in the Heavensto dispatch the answer to your door. If you have not yet received Jesus as your Lord and Savior, do it now! Help from Heaven: its only a prayer away! 17
Petition
H allowed be thy name (Lk. 11:2).
The next thought in this prayer pattern is the request for Gods Name to be hallowed, or made holy. The interesting thing is the way this reads in the original text: Let Your Name be hallowed. The idea is, by someone. Obviously, the unsaved are not interested in bragging about Gods Name! In other words, if you and I as believers dont do this, who will?
Gods Name is both an appellation and an emblem of His Presence and character. The Name Yahweh carries with it the concept of eternality: He always was, is, and ever shall be. This quality is shared by all Three Members of the Godhead. As Paul writes in the Letter to the Hebrews, Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever.
We hallow Gods Name when we testify to His goodness, grace and answers to our prayers. Some folks have hallowed or sanctified dishes. Theyre never used, but are just displayed in the cabinet. They certainly wouldnt be used to feed the dog! How sad that the only way some folks speak Gods Name is in blasphemy. As Christians, we can make a difference. He has a name for every need.
Petition Help from Heaven 18 Seven Names of God
If youve taken this ministrys courses, you remember the various compound Names of God.
Yahweh-yireh: the One Who looks ahead and provides. Yahweh-ropheka: Our Physician and Healer. Yahweh-nissi: Our Banner of victory over the enemy. Yahweh-shalom: Our Peace. Yahweh-rohi: Our Shepherd Who guides us continually. Yahweh-tsidkenu: Our Righteousness with the Godhead. Yahweh-shammah: Our Ever-Present Help in time of need.
What more could we desire?
When you and I depend upon this faithful Divine Friend and call upon Him in prayer, He dispatches help from Heaven in the form of miraculous supplies to our human needs. He then expects us to hallow His Name, or boast about our deliverance to others.
Is He on an ego trip? Of course not. He simply wants us to advertise His Presence and Power to those who have not yet met Him in living faith. He desires all of us to experience His Love and nurture.
Let the redeemed of the Lord, say so! 19
The Kingdom
T hy Kingdom come (Lk. 11:2).
The Kingdom of God is a continuing theme in the ministry of Jesus Christ. It shouldnt surprise us that He would encourage prayer for its manifestation in our lives.
We need to remember that it has several aspects. First of all it is the reign or rule of God over His creation. It is His overarching control of the cosmos in truth and love.
Outward and Physical
The Kingdom of God, when viewed from the scriptures appears in a number of different ways. It is spoken of in terms of outward physical manifestations of Gods Power.
But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you (Mt. 12:28).
Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.
And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. The Kingdom Help from Heaven 20 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
And there was great joy in that city (Acts 8:5-8).
Here we see the obvious operation of the Spirit of God in providing physical and outward proof of the dominion of God in the lives and affairs of men. Isnt that what humanity craves?
If God is real and places eternal requirements upon our souls, isnt it logical that He would give evidence of His rights in this area in the physical dimension?
The Kingdom Now
An amazing operation of this principle took place the other night.
A unsaved individual who appeared to be in his late 30s answered the altar call to receive Christ as Savior in our hotel service. His left arm was drawn up and lifeless and he limped, using a cane with his right arm. It turned out that hed suffered a stroke two and a half years previously and had lost the use of his left side. After prayer, he was able to lift his left arm head-high. The following night he came for prayer again and was able to lift it over his head. In addition, he was making large arcing circles with his left leg and walking without the use of his cane.
Perhaps more amazing was what we learned later. The night before he had first attended our services in Athens, hed had a dream in which a beam of light was striking him. At first, he covered his face and body for protection. Then a man with a long, white beard appeared and told him, This is for your good.
That evening he attended his first service.
Who can predict when Gods Kingdom will breakthrough in 21 the life of a lost, suffering human being? We cant make it happen, but we can certainly pray for it to.
Present and Spiritual
This also illustrates the present and spiritual nature of the Kingdom.
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost (Rm. 14:17).
And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation.
Neither shall they say, Lo here! Or lo there! For, behold, the kingdom of God is within you (Lk. 17:20-21).
Future and Physical
What does Jesus really mean when He counsels us to pray for Gods Kingdom to come in the light of these scriptures?
First, we should pray for an immediate, spiritual and physical manifestation of Gods reign where it is not yet in evidence.
Secondly, we should pray for the coming of the future, physical dimension of the Kingdom of God when Jesus returns in glory.
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory (Mt. 25:31).
It will be a great day when the kingdoms of this world have become the Kingdom of our God and of His Christ and He shall reignphysicallyforever and ever! The Kingdom Help from Heaven 22 Until then, we can rejoice in the inner, spiritual dimensions of the Kingdom which we enjoy.
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son (Col. 1:13).
In addition, we can experience the outward, physical manifestations of Gods delivering power in the lives of others as we minister the full Gospel in His Name.
Deliverance
Just the other night a young man with a long-standing drug habit came in the prayer line in our hotel meetings in Athens. He received Christ as Savior and was delivered instantly.
The next night, he testified through the interpreter that he was attacked in his dreams by demons, but resisted them in the Name of Jesus. The conflict was apparently so real that a large mirror hanging on the wall suddenly dropped to the floor, shattering in pieces and disturbing others in the apartment building.
It should come as no surprise that evil beings from the fallen, defeated kingdom would seek to thwart Gods will from being done in the lives of suffering humans. Let us clothe ourselves with the whole armor of God and continue to overcome the enemy!
Kingdoms are at war.
Battle stations! 23
Gods Will
T hy will be done: as in heaven, so in earth (Lk. 11:2).
This verse reads, literally, the willYourslet it be birthed at once, as in Heaven, also upon the earth.
The verb is passive voice (i.e., someone else must do it) and imperative mood (a command to be obeyed at once).
Again, it is implied that Gods will should be birthed into being on earth by us. The devils crowd certainly isnt going to make itself available to the Lord. If we dont, who will?
Just here some of us get confused. Many think of Gods will as the most unpleasant of lifes possibilities. Exactly the opposite is true.
A few days ago I was preaching on the subject, The Invisible Man, in a little village called Orchomenos, not far from Athens. My text was Galatians 2:20. I pointed out that Paul, after his conversion, was completely at Gods disposaland loving it!
Similarly, Jesus said doing Gods will for Him and finishing His work was His food. The Master knew what He was doing when He used food as an illustration. Americans love to eat! My wife, Barbara, once commented, America is the only nation on Gods Will Help from Heaven 24 earth where people search through health food stores looking for a pill that they can ingest to lose weight!
As I said in my book, At the Masters Feet, food stimulates, satisfies and sustains us. This is also what Gods will does.
Notice also the comparison Jesus draws: as in Heaven, also upon the earth.
There is no: sin, sickness, sorrow, satanic strategy or contrary circumstance in Heaven! No darkness, tragedy, loss, unhappiness, grief or bondage. These things are all down here!
According to the Master, they are to be changedby usto match Heavenly realities!
This is one of the purposes of prayer. This is the reason He gave us the keys of the kingdom.
And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven (Matt. 16:19).
We need to quickly remind ourselves that the verbs read, literally, shall have been bound and shall have been loosed.
Its not that were running around forbidding and allowing, indiscriminately, but, rather, simply binding or loosing on earth that which God has already either forbad or allowed in Heaven.
He isnt backing us up; were representing Him. A soldier boy has a weapon, but he doesnt fire it when he chooses but, rather, when and where he is commanded by his commanding officer.
We loose believing sinners from their sin. We heal the sick from their diseases. 25 We cast out devils from the oppressed. We release the bound from their fetters.
It is exciting to realize that we possess delegated authority and represent a victorious Kingdom here on planet earth.
Through Christ, the spiritual work has been done and we have the blessed privilege and responsibility of declaring liberty to the captives! We simply declare the truths of Gods revelation and accomplishment and allow the Word of faith to take root in the hearts of hungry, searching listeners. As they exercise their will to believe the Truth, Gods Power will set them free, causing His divine will to be birthed into their lives. Gods Will Help from Heaven 26

Provision
G ive us day by day our daily bread (Lk. 11:3).
How many sermons have you heard; how many books have you read where this verse has been expounded?
Isnt it interesting how we are normally admonished to not worry about the temporal issues of life based upon this text?
God doesnt want us to worry about food, shelter or clothing, were told. He just wants us to trust Him for these things.
Sounds almost too good to be true, doesnt it?
It is.
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat (II Thes. 3:10).
I dont think Paul would have contradicted Jesus, do you?
If not, then it must be that the Lord Jesus was speaking about something besides physical sustenance when He instructed us to request from the Heavenly Father, our daily bread.
Provision Help from Heaven 28 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Mt. 4:4).
In actual fact, this verse connects directly with the one preceding it. Exactly how is Gods will to be birthed into our earthly existence?
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear (Heb. 11:3).
Gods Word is Seed. It is prophetic and preprogrammed to produce what He desires. When we receive, believe and act upon the Word of God, the supply to our need is created for us.
Healing Miracles
Its amazing as well as humbling to watch this work in the lives of needy people.
Our first meeting in Athens was very well attended. After about 30 persons received Christ, I heard from the Lord about deaf ears being opened. I was delighted to hear a young lady who had just received salvation had experienced her deaf ear opening up. The Word of God did it. Before service I had been praying for the Lord to give the people their daily bread. He did. Like Israel of old, all they had to do was gather up the manna.
Again, in the town of Orchomenos, a young lady came in the prayer line after I preached and told me of her back pains. Suddenly I asked, Do you have a short leg? She assured me she didnt. The impression remained and I questioned her again. I think she was getting a little agitated with me but she eventually sat downback against the chairand saw her one leg was fully inch shorter than the other. The Lord was endeavoring to give her her daily bread. As I looked at her feet I said, Spine, get in line. It did. 29 The following morning, the same scenario was repeated as a young man watched his one leg move out inch as all back pain left. A middle-aged mandeaf in one earalso experienced healing.
The Word of God did it.
Perhaps you think your need is: money, healing, wisdom, a relationship, ministry or some mountain moved.
In reality, all you and I really need is one Word from God. The things that are seen (needs) are temporal and subject to change. The things that are unseen (supplies) are eternal.
Our friend, Denise, had been married for four years. She had suffered several miscarriages and had been told she would not be able to carry a baby to term. Last year when she came in the prayer line during our meetings in Athens I was praying for her healing when, suddenly, I uttered a prophetic word: Let her carry the baby to term and let there be twins!
We had dessert at her home the other day. She and her husband, Demetri, are expecting the birth of twins in January, 200l.
What are we looking at?
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal (II Cor. 4:18). Provision Help from Heaven 30

Forgiveness & Fellowship
A nd forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us (Lk. 11:4).
I believe it was Archbishop Fulton Sheen who said, He who refuses to forgive destroys the very bridge over which he himself must cross.
It is interesting that this next principle of prayer involves both the vertical and horizontal dimensions of life. In His teaching about the powerful prayer of faith in Marks gospel, chapter 11, Jesus again links forgiveness of others with answered prayer (Mk. 11:22ff.). Paul, likewise, affirms that faith worketh by love (Gal. 5:6). John, the beloved, reminds us that those whose prayers are answered live a life style of obedience (I Jn. 3:22).
The text quoted above is very enlightening in the original language. It reads: And forgive us the sinsoursat once; for we-we also are continually forgiving every one that is continually indebted to us.
Notice, Gods forgiveness of us is once for all. Our forgiveness of others is continuous. Notice, also, that Gods forgiveness of us precedes our forgiveness of others. Psychologically, it couldnt be any other way. If we struggle under a sense of being unforgiven by our God, how could we possibly extend grace to others? Even our loving others Forgiveness & Fellowship Help from Heaven 32 follows our loving ourselves. In the spiritual realm the principle is always, freely ye have received; freely give. This goes against the grain of traditional Christianity which affirms that we must suffer, sacrifice, demean and punish ourselves in order to be holy. But this is the biblical truth. Only the forgiven can forgive; only the accepted can welcome the unlovely.
For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins (Heb. 10:2).
Here is a verse worth its weight in gold. Under the old economy, sins were atoned for year after year. In the New Testament, all of our sinspast, present and futurewere all blotted out at once in the sacrifice of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Read carefully the verses commenting on our forgiveness in the New Testament. Without one exception they refer to a complete forgiveness accomplished for us in the past.
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you (Eph. 4:32).
Likewise, our forgiveness of others is not once for all, but continuous, as in the verse above.
The Master is encouraging us to make sure of our relationship with the Heavenly Father first, and then to extend this gracious life style toward our brothers and sisters in the Lord. As I mentioned in another book, the Christian life can be effectively pictured by a cross. The vertical beam illustrates our relationship to the Lord, loving Him with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength. The horizontal beam symbolizes our relationship to others: loving them as we are loving ourselves. We need both in order to glorify God, minister to others and be fulfilled here and hereafter.
33 Have you definitely established a faith relationship with the God of the universe through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ? Are you extending grace to your fellow man in the light of Gods forgiveness and acceptance of you? If your prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, perhaps one or both beams is out of place.
The story goes that a believer was struggling with a difficult brother and despaired in prayer, Lord, remove this wicked person from the earth! The Lord replied, Which one?
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear (I Cor. 10:13).
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation (Acts 17:26).
Its not possible to live on this earth for any length of time without realizing we all share the very same human nature. In this present crusade in Greece the language and culture of the people may differ from America, but the needs, hopes and desires dont. We all need Goddesperatelyand we need each other. Protection
A nd lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil (Lk. 11:4).
Its amazing to me how some clichs in the Body of Christ get repeated and continue to circulate, unchallenged. One is, Were not supposed to ask God to do anything about the devil; thats up to us. It seems the Lord never heard that tape series.
This verse reads, literally, but deliver us at once from the evil one.
Someone objects: That was before the Cross.
Paul writes (after the Cross):
And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen (Rom. 16:20).
He seems to remain confused on this issue as he encourages the Thessalonians:
But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil (II Thess. 3:2).
Again, the Greek reads, the evil one. Protection Help from Heaven 36 This shouldnt surprise us; Paul mistakenly followed the Lords advice in Lukes gospel and asked to be delivered from the power of evil, himself:
For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me (II Cor. 12:8).
Regardless of what mistaken Bible teachers may tell us, the Word of the Lord remains very clear on this subject. Though we do, in fact, cast out devils, we are also to pray to the Heavenly Father to both be preserved from temptation, testing and trial, and to be delivered from the plans, purposes and pursuits of the Evil One. Faith and prayer are exactly how we submit ourselves to God and resist the devil.
I wonder how much suffering we could have been spared by crying out to God for deliverance as Paul did, rather than following the advice of ignorant preachers?
Four-fold Fight
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices (II Cor. 2:11).
Perhaps it would be helpful at this juncture to look at the four different aspects of spiritual warfare that present themselves to us in our walk of faith. Each of them must be handled appropriately in order to effectively defeat them.
1. Satan
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour (I Pt. 5:8).
Peter reminds us that we are to resist the devil, steadfast in the faith (I Pt. 5:9). This is exactly what Jesus did in the wilderness conflict. 37 While the only thing better than winning a battle is not having to enter it in the first place (and prayer in advance will deliver us from many conflicts), sometimes they are unavoidable.
A War of Words
Just how does the Lord answer our prayers when we request to be delivered from the evil one?
He furnishes us with an appropriate word from His Word which gives us a mighty shield of faith.
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Rom. 10:17).
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked (Eph. 6:16).
Satans weapons are words. He approached the Savior in the wilderness with words.
How did He defeat him?
With words; Gods words (see Mt. 4).
This is another reason it is so vitally important to heed the Masters admonition to praydailyfor our daily bread. This word from God can then be used as a shield against Satans fiery darts (words of unbelief).
The Invisible Man
For example, not long ago I was having dinner with someone. They were detailing all of the things Satan was doing in the lives of many people. They then looked at me and said, I guess youre next. This sentence didnt exactly inspire faith! I excused myself and went to the restroom. As I looked Protection Help from Heaven 38 into the mirror and pondered that sentence, I looked to the Lord in silent prayer. The Holy Spirit whispered to my heart:
Its not about you. Strictly speaking, you dont exist at all.
Naturally, I wondered about the meaning of that statement. Immediately, He spoke a scripture to me:
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me (Gal. 2:20).
Presently, all my apprehension dissipated.
I had received a, word from God (Rom. 10:17, Gk.). It had served as a shield and put out the enemys fiery dart.
In addition, I went on to develop a sermon on the Crucified Life. I recently preached it in Greece and Rev. Zacharious wife, Yanna, said, You preached a masterpiece today.
The morning I ministered that message, a middle-aged woman answered the altar call and prayed the sinners prayer in Greek and English. We later discovered she was a physician who had never attended a full gospel church service. That morning something told her, You must attend that church today.
She received Eternal Life, in part, because of a spiritual battle I had won in America months ago.
What power there is in Gods Word!
2. Fallen Angels
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them 39 down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment (II Pt. 2:4).
There is a second aspect to spiritual we must address. Here we do not need to resist the enemy, but simply learn from their mistakes.
The Bible speaks of the fall of a certain group of angels who cohabited with earthly women and produced giants as a result of this sinful union (Gen. 6:4; Jude 6).
As Peter says in the text quoted above these angels pose no threat to us as they are presently incarcerated in a compartment of the underworld, awaiting the final judgment.
What then is the proper response to them?
Jude speaks of them leaving their first estate. In other words, they got out of position. What a lesson for all of us!
Both Uzziah and Saul sinned in a similar manner. Though anointed to serve as kings, they intrudedunbiddeninto the priests office. Both were judged. Uzziah suffered leprosy and Saul died a suicide. It is important to realize that not only did they not receive the priesthood, but they lost their original position as kings.
But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him (I Cor. 12:18).
And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues (I Cor. 12:28).
This is not to say that God cannot anoint and appoint someone to stand in more than one ministerial position (apostles seem to be able to fulfill all five ministerial obligations), yet, we Protection Help from Heaven 40 must be sure it is the Lord Who is adding to our responsibilities and not our carnal ego desires.
God knows us better than we know ourselves; we must trust Him. We must learn the biblical truth that:
For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another (Psa. 75:6, 7).
3. Principalities and Powers
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (Eph. 6:12).
We know from other scriptures that there are a variety of supernatural beings in the celestial realm. The Bible speaks of the four Living Ones around Gods Throne, of cherubim and seraphim, of archangels such as Michael and Gabriel and of myriads of elect angels who minister for the saints. No doubt, when Lucifer fell from grace, a number of other angels followed him in his rebellion. In other words, the same organizational structure exists, but allegiance has changed from God to Satan.
The Book of Daniel mentions evil, spiritual potentates over Persia and Greece (Dan. 10:20). These malevolent powers mastermind the affairs of the nations, motivating those under their control to do their will. Gods angelssuch as Michael are apparently waging warfare against them. Our part (as illustrated in the life of Daniel) is to pray (Eph. 6:17-18; see my book, The Perfect Weapon).
Paul reveals that the Holy Spirit is our Sword in this spiritual warfare Whom we wield by means of prayer in the Spirit (other tongues). The Holy SpiritGods Voiceon our 41 behalf, wins the battle for us in the heavenlies through our prayer lives and then we have the blessed privilege and responsibility of plundering the strong mans goods as we declare the facts of faith to those in need. We saw this demonstrated dramatically during this trip to Greece.
A similar experience occurred during my initial apostolic ministry to this nation in 1985. Midway through those meetings we encountered strong satanic opposition and interceded for hours in the Spirit. Suddenly, I saw into the spirit world and was given the name of the ruling spirit over Athens. We bound it and entered into the most effective meetings in my ministry up to that time (see my book, The Presence of God).
I mentioned in the beginning of this book that I would share my son, Solomons experience along this line. Following is his experience in his own words. May the Lord, Himself, enable us to benefit from this revelation.
Solomons Vision
I had been praying in the Spirit for three or four hours and it was now about 3 a.m. I also had asked the Holy Spirit to manifest in me the discerning of spirits, word of knowledge, and word of wisdom, concerning the evil spirits that would be affecting the meetings, and who were causing our health problems.
After praying in tongues for a while longer, praising God, and dwelling in His presence, an image appeared before me. Although I could see this image in front of me, I was still well aware of lying in my bed praying in the Spirit. It was not fully detailed, but I could clearly make out images, colors, etc. It was as though as I was given a window of vision to another location.
I found myself walking up a curving flight of marble stairs. They were situated high in the sky, seemed as though they rose up through the clouds, working their way up to a loft. It gave Protection Help from Heaven 42 the impression of a palace in the sky. Although I was personally present in the vision, I could look at myself as though I were watching a movie.
In front of me I noticed a short, stocky being. It was grayish in color, and was wearing armor like that seen in ancient pagan civilizationsboots, a sheet of metal hanging over his back, and a metal helmet covering most of his head. He walked slowly up the curving stairs, right in front of me. He was walking very purposefully, as though he were carrying out orders and nothing else was on his mind. I grabbed him by the shoulder and turned him around. He then became angry and started to push me. I continued praying in tongues in bed, although louder, and there came lightnings from my body in the vision, which seemed to attack him. It was then I noticed I had a sword and as I was swinging it, the great light continued to "pour" into him, knocking him backwards. He was unable to retaliate even though he was highly enraged at my actions. As we both moved up onto the loft from the stairs, two angels came from above and behind me, swooping down in a great cloud of light, picked him up by one arm each, and carried him out of my field of vision.
The vision then moved to the right of the stairs, to where the walkway continued. I saw a marble throne, lifted up, ornate and tall. Seated on it was a tall being, with great adornments. It was as though the details of, and objects in, his clothing were actually part of his bodyincluding his headdress, which looked like two crescent moons on each side of his head. He emanated pride, seated in the grayish, marble throne. The whole setting had the same color and feeling, of being magnificent, yet somehow fallen from its original creation. The being, also, gave the same impressionalthough he was majestic, there was a feeling of loss of original stature, position, and purpose.
As I walked up to the being, he began to tilt his head to one side, looking at me inquisitively. It was as though he was 43 thinking, What manner of being is this? And how did it get up here? I then began to speak.
Your reign is over. I rebuke you, and command you to come off of your throne of dominion. By the authority of Christ, you will reign no longer.
Lying in my bed watching this scene, I then began to pray in tongues more loudly. Again, I noticed I was wielding a Sword at him in the vision, and great amounts of colored light began to emanate from my body and the Sword, rushing toward him in an attack. He was surprised and stood up, slowly being pushed backward, revealing more fully his great height and stature. He then began to change colors and appearance, His whole body was filled with a kind of blackness. His face took on an horrendous, angry expression, as though he could not believe I would attempt such a thing. He tried to walk towards me, but the great light coming from me was keeping him from moving.
When he realized his inability, a great swarm of the same blackness that had colored his body materialized behind and all around him. I knew it was intelligent, was subservient to him, and had come at his command. It began trying to move towards me as well, as he continued his efforts. All the time the great lightnings from my Sword continued to cut away at him and the great, black swarm, rendering them powerless to attack me or move forward, causing his rage to increase.
As I saw no further progress was being made, I thought that now would be the perfect time for the angels to return. It was as though this thought was a request. Not that I had commanded any angels, but as though I had put in a request for them to come to my side. At this, like before, they came from above and behind me, swooping down in a marvelous light. Yet, instead of picking up the being like before, they drew swords and began to cut away at this tall being and the swarm around him as well. I could tell that this enemy was now being Protection Help from Heaven 44 pushed back, but more of the black swarm appeared and continued resisting. I could tell that our attack was causing some kind of damage and pain to our enemies.
As the angels and I continued to emanate light from our bodies and swords, a great Hand descended from the same direction as the angels had come. It then grabbed the being and the swarm, enveloping it with great ease, and just as quickly as it appeared, took them from the throne the scene of the vision withdrew as the Hand now carried the enemy across the backdrop of space, with the sphere of the earth to the far right of my field of vision, finally throwing them into some kind of black hole. The scene of the throne in the sky then returned before me.
The throne was now empty, and the angels stood with me, continuing to emanate a great light of glory. There was a sense of peace and calm. They began to walk toward each side of the throne, as though they were flanking it. Just then, in a flash of fire, a Man appeared on the throne. I knew it was Jesus. He was a flaming fire, the source of such tremendous glory and majesty. I immediately fell upon one knee, bowing my head toward Him. He began speaking.
An honorable victory, my son. You fought with great diligence and courage. This throne has now been returned to My authority. What many do not realize is that mankind has authority upon the earth. It is he who received dominion over the earth from the hand of God Himself. While it is true that the majority of mankind has yielded that dominion to Satan, there are those such as yourself who have chosen to yield their authority to Me. What you must tell your brothers and sisters is this: For those who serve Me, dominion on the earth can be taken from the enemy. I and my Spirit will take the thrones back that the spiritual squatters of the heavenlies have occupied. Once challenged, they have no authority or power to stay in their high place. But it is up to you to 45 speak dominion over these enemies that I may take their place. You must exercise your authority as mankind to willingly give Me authority over the earth and its high places of ruling.
He then spoke some things personal to me. After which, He continued speaking, and I knew He meant the following not only for me, but for all believers.
The Sword in your hand will never be lost, nor will It ever break in battle. Wield It continually. I have given you many weapons to defeat the enemy. You must ask the Spirit for His gifts and manifestations; they will enable you to discern the condition and position of the enemy, allowing you to better attack and defeat him. Continue the battle. There is still much to be done.
At this, the vision ended. I began to thank my Lord for such a glimpse into the heavenlies. As I began to think upon the vision, and later shared it with my dad, some things became very clear.
The Holy Spirit wants to give us His gifts and manifest Himself through us. All we must do is ask in faith. I had just asked Him for the three manifestations (word of knowledge & of wisdom, and discerning of spirits), when the vision came.
It was through praying in the Spirit (other tongues) that this battle had been begun, fought, and won. It had caused me to "ascend" into the heavenlies. The vision beginning with stairs ascending out of thick clouds clearly shows that I had been walking up them the whole time I had been praying for three or four hours, not realizing it in the flesh.
That the short, gnome-like being in front of me was not aware of my presence tells me that our prayer language is often unintelligible to the enemy. They are not aware of our preparation for battle, nor are they aware of our presence until Protection Help from Heaven 46 we decide to let them know. Once confronted, some will know who we are, while others will not. The short being knew I had intentions against him as soon as I turned him around, while the tall being on the throne was curious as to my purpose and origin.
Many times the enemy is ignorant of what we are doing. They also seem to be so full of pride that they cannot believe we would even imagine of confronting their authority or power. Yet, they cannot stand against us when our Sword is drawn and in use. The Sword is the Holy Spirit, and praying in tongues is the means of wielding it. Great light comes from the Spirit when we let Him pray through us, nullifying the power of the enemy. Even one person can hold back a great fallen angel and his swarm of evil spirits. It will be the angels of Yahweh who help us win the victory, ultimately accomplished by God the Father, Himself.
Please don't give up in prayer in tongues if it feels as though you are making no progress. Although you may not sense it, you are climbing stairways into the heavenlies, and speaking mysteries in your spirit, which are affecting and changing the unseen worlds. You are responsible for bringing the will of the Father into this earth, just as it is in heaven. Try to pray continually in the Holy Spirit for extended periods of time, and see just how much happens from the hand of Yahweh, Himself!
4. Demons
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues (Mk. 16:17).
This last area of spiritual warfare is perhaps the most easily understood. It is a tragic fact that multitudes of individuals are in the grip of satanic powers; they are unable to free themselves.
Thank God, through the atonement of Christ at Calvary, evil has been legally vanquished. In addition, we children of Almighty God have been given both the right and the might to 47 dislodge them from seeking sufferers.
The other morning in the town of Orchomenos I said, You unclean spirit of deafness, come out of this ear! The young man testified to being instantly healed of his hearing problem.
The Bible speaks of spirits of: infirmity, deafness, dumbness, blindness, paralysis, etc. While not all sickness and disease is caused by demons, some certainly is. In addition, all kinds of addictions, perversions and spiritual, emotional and physical bondages often owe their seemingly invincible power to the operation of demons. It is up to us to detect them and, through the operation of the Power of the Holy Spirit and His gifts of faith and the working of miracles, cast them out of the oppressed.
While we do not know for certain the origin of demons (some scholars, citing the Book of Enoch, believe them to be the spirits of the giants of the Old Testament period), we can be sure they are diabolical in their intentions toward humanity.
What a relief to know our God in-depth and to be enabled through our authority in Christ Jesus and the Anointing of His Spirit, to set the captives free! Protection Help from Heaven 48

Practice
T he subtitle of this book reads, A Timeless Principle; a Timely Practice. This is exactly the truth. Although the principles of the Lords Prayer were given by the Master over 2,000 years ago, we can practice them daily to the glory of God, today.
As I mentioned earlier, the important fact to remember is that these concepts need to be prayed, not just said or recited.
In the Epistles, we are constantly encouraged to pray in the Spirit, or under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of God. Indeed, in his letter to the Philippians, Paul writes:
Stop being anxious about anything, but in everything, by the prayer and the supplication, with thanksgivings, let your requests be being made known to God (Phil. 4:6, Gk.).
It is as though the prayers (of the Holy Spirit) are almost animate or living. They are! We have desires, needs, hopes, aspirations, etc., but we are encouraged to allow the Holy Spirits words to express them. In this way, our desires are brought into line with Gods will in the specific matters and the answers are forthcoming (I Jn. 5:14-15).
In addition, as we have discussed, praying with the help of the Holy Spirit (in other tongues) allows Him the opportunity of Practice Help from Heaven 50 ministering to us: revelations, prophecies, words of knowledge and teachings (I Cor. 14:6, 18). No doubt, this is what Paul experienced when he prayed three times concerning his thorn in the flesh. He speaks of the Lord saying to him. How did He do this? Through the operation of the Holy Spirit.
Paul describes this process beautifully in his letter to the Corinthians.
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God (I Cor. 14:28).
In other words, we are to pray (inwardly, in our minds/spirits) in our own language, and outwardly (whispering, if in the presence of others) in tongues. This is the perfect prayer.
Paul says we should pray at all times in the Spirit (Eph. 6:18). The word rendered times in this verse refers, not to chronological time (seconds, hours, minutes), but to specific, strategic seasons. We sometimes hear of Gods windows of opportunity which must be taken advantage of if not to be missed.
Many years ago, my wife and I were driving to our home church (we were evangelizing, not pastoring; but evangelists need pastors too). Suddenly, a strategic time presented itself in the form of an intense prayer burden; she began to travail in the Spirit. A half-hour later our pastor resigned. We later learned hed had an affair. An absolutely horrific time followed and continued for months afterward. Eventually a wonderful victory was achieved for many involved. What if she hadnt prayed?
Practice Makes Perfect
It is my hope and prayer that you will utilize the information in this book to super-charge your prayer life. Begin to implement these concepts given to us by Jesus on a daily basis. In matters of intercession, ask that Gods particular Covenant-Name be 51 sanctified by those in need. Ask for His Kingdom to be manifested in power in their situation, for His will to be birthed into reality. Beseech Him to give themthis very daytheir daily bread in order to begin the miracle they need. Pray that they keep all spiritual static off the line by forgiving those who have offended them. And be faithful to request deliverance from any and all malevolent, spiritual influences in their lives.
Praise
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen (Mt. 6:13).
Matthews account of our Lords prayer teaching ends with this beautiful doxology. How wonderful to remind ourselves that God truly is sovereign over all, regardless of what our senses may testify on any given day. And we are to live to His glory (Eph. 1:12). We were created for His pleasure (Rev. 4:11). It is this divine Master we are to serve (Mt. 6:24).
May the Lord, Himself, help us to seek and findfor ourselves and othershelp from Heaven. Practice Help from Heaven 52

Epilogue
T hou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee (Isa. 26:3).
Earlier in this book I mentioned hearing the audible Voice of God. At that time, it spoke only one word, Pray.
Just after this manuscript went to print, I was awakened in the middle of the night by an audible Voice. It again appeared to be that of a Man in His 30s. It spoke one word, but repeated it twice. It was loud enough to awaken me from a sound sleep. The word? Peace; peace.
The verse quoted above reads in the Hebrew:
Thou wilt keep him in peace, peace, whose imagination is stayed on Thee; because he trusteth in Thee.
What a blessing! And really, isnt this the afterglow of all successful prayer?
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7).
It seems the Lord had a different ending in mind for this book. Epilogue Help from Heaven 54 ALSO BY THE SAME AUTHOR
