Installation Consideration for NetBackup Client on Linux/Unix System.
Symantec does not support installation of NetBackup in an NFS-mounted directory.

Before you install or use NetBackup on a Linux (Red Hat/SuSE) client, verify that the
inetd(or xinetd) service is started on that machine
The gzip and the gunzip commands must be installed on each system. The directories
where the commands are installed must be part of the root users PATH environment
variable setting.
To install clients to a location other than the default, you must create and link the directory
before you install the client software. First create the directory where you want the
software to reside, and then create /usr/openv as a link to that directory.
Add hostname and IP address of master server and client entry in '/etc/hosts' of master
server and client.
Before installing client add the client name and OS type in configuration database. Follow
the below method to add the client to configuration database.
Adding client details to the configuration database.
Open the Netbackup Administration console in the master server.

Select 'Policies' under the 'Netbackup Management' option. Right click and select New
Policies on the All Policies window.
Type new policy name and click ok
And select client options and add the client name and platform details. Click ok to add.
Installation Methods
We can install NetBackup clients on UNIX systems with the following methods:
Local installations
Remote (push) installations
Local installations
This method installs the client software on the computer where you run the installation
script. This method is used to install the client software locally if remote installation is not
possible. Remote installation is not possible if your NetBackup server runs Windows
2000/2003 Server. Also where Netbackup server runs with 64bit and need to install
NetBackup client on 32bit node. The below example shows the installation of NetBackup
client 6.5 on Redhat 5 32bit node.

Unzip the NB 6.5 client agent packages
root@redhat32bit # tar xzf NetBackup_6.5_CLIENTS2.gz
Navigate to the directory contains 'install' script.
root@redhat32bit # cd NB_65_CLIENTS2_20070723
Run the 'install' script and follow the procedure
root@redhat32bit # ./install
Do you wish to continue? [y,n] (y) y
Do you want to install the NetBackup client software for this client? [y,n] (y) y
Enter the name of the NetBackup server : nbserver
Would you like to use "redhat32bit" as the configured
name of the NetBackup client? [y,n] (y)y
Remote installations
This method installs the client software to the remote host from the master server. Remote
installation uses the different methods like ssh, rsh, ftp and sftp.
Netbackup Client 7.5 Installation on 64bit node using ssh remote installation.
Login to the master server thru ssh and navigate to the following directory
Whereas '/usr/openv/netbackup' is Netbackup server installation directory. If
Netbackup server is installed in different directory navigate to it.
root@nbserver # cd /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/
Run the install_client_files script on the NetBackup server.
root@nbserver # ./install_client_files ssh newclient
newclient.

Installing NetBackup software on newclient

Windows Client Installation

Log in as administrator on the host or system server.
Insert the NetBackup installation CD in the drive. On systems with Autorun enabled, the
installation starts automatically. If Autorun is not enabled, navigate to the CD drive and
double-click Launch.exe.
On the initial screen, select NetBackup Installation.

On the installation screen, select Install Client Software.
On the Welcome screen, click Next.
On the License Agreement screen, accept the terms of the agreement.
On the Installation Type screen, select the following:
Install to this computer only
Either Typical or Custom installation.

For typical installations, NetBackup uses the default port numbers and default
service start-up settings.

For custom installations, NetBackup lets you set service startup settings, change port
numbers, and specify the installation location. You can also choose whether to install
NetBackup documentation, debug symbols, and VSP.
Click Next.
On the NetBackup System Names screen, provide the following information:
Client Name Enter the name of the client machine on which you are logged in.
Master Server Name Enter the master server name here.
Additional Servers Enter all the server names that you want this client to access.
LiveUpdate
Install LiveUpdate Agent
To install the LiveUpdate agent, leave the check box checked. Otherwise, click the check
box to remove the check to prevent agent installation.
Location of LiveUpdate Server
Enter the network path for the NetBackup LiveUpdate server here.
Server Type
Select the type of server (LAN, HTTP, or HTTPS) used for the NetBackup LiveUpdate
server.
On the Ready to Install screen, click Install.
On the System Validation Complete screen, click Finish.
On Windows client, configure firewall to allow access for Netbackup processes

Procedure for allowing client level restoration

By default a NetBackup client is only allowed to browse and restore backup images for
itself. The error message is displayed when attempting to browse images for other clients,
unless the master server is configured to grant the requesting client access to the images
for the source client. Follow the below steps on the master server to grant
permission for the alternate client to access images other than it's own.
Create a folder <Install path>\NetBackup\db\altnames. The files that grant
permissions will be created in this folder and must not have any file extensions
such as '.txt'.
To grant all clients permission to browse and restore the images of all other
clients, create a file named "No.Restrictions".
To grant one requesting client (altclient) permission to browse and restore images
from another source client (srcclient), create a file with the same name as the
requesting client and place the name of the source client into the file. E.g. echo
srcclient > altclient
