The document provides information on retrieving and interpreting diagnostic trouble codes on older Kia vehicles without OBD-II using flashing lights on the malfunction indicator lamp. It also lists many common diagnostic codes and what components or systems they indicate issues with.

On 1995 Sportage models, you turn the ignition to On but do not start the engine. On other models, you start and warm the engine, then run it at 2,000 RPM for 3 minutes. The diagnostic trouble codes will then be displayed as a series of long and short flashes on the malfunction indicator lamp.

Some common codes listed include code 2 for a distributor with no signal, code 8 for a mass air flow sensor issue, code 9 for an engine coolant temperature sensor problem, and code 15 for an oxygen sensor fault. The codes indicate specific component or system faults.

Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Models up to 95
When trouble occurs in the main input or output devices, check for the
cause using the data link connector (DLC) and the malfunction indicator
lamp located in the instrument cluster. Failures of each input and output
device are indicated and retrieved from the engine control module
(ECM) as diagnostic trouble codes.

Locate DLC at top center of firewall and use jumper wire to

connect ENG. TEST and ground terminals.
On 1995 Sportage models, turn ignition to On, but do not
start engine.
On other models, start and warm engine, then run at 2,000
RPM for 3 minutes.
Diagnostic trouble codes will be displayed as a series of long
and short flashes on the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
Trouble Code Interpretation

The ECM indicates stored fault code by flashing the malfunction

indicator/check engine lamp. Fault codes 1 through 9 are indicated by

individual short blinks and fault codes 10 and above are indicated by
long and short blinks. One long blink is equivalent to 10 short blinks.
The fault code can be determined by adding the long and short blinks.
Clearing Trouble Codes
Diagnostic trouble codes may be cleared by disconnecting the battery
ground cable for at least 20 seconds.
