Dirty Pick-up Trucks

& Act Like an Extrovert
(even if you are an introvert)

ll over the northern and

western parts of Canada
there are countless dirty
pick-up trucks. Heavy tires,
moose racks, jacked-up, trickedout in every way... and amazingly dirty. Most, if not all, that
have a year or two on them are
battle-scarred, dented and
scratched, and almost to a fault
the windshields are broken. The
only part of most of these trucks
that is not covered with road
mud is the area where the windshield wipers sweep the windshield. They are all big
muscled-up take-no-prisoners
type of vehicles, most of them
diesels or some other chippedup-for-horsepower gas guzzler.

Every truck has oilfield-related

hardware in the box at the
back... compressors, welders,
fuel tanks, generators, tool boxes
and every other pieces of equipment you can imagine for heavy
field work. The trucks all look
extroverted to me. A big bold
noisy statement, and setup for
the business of getting things
done. And you cant help but
think, who is driving these rigs?
Are they all the big hardened
roughneck-type, five-foot-eight
and two-hundred pounds or sixfoot-two and two-forty-five? Are
they all male? Are the
owner/drivers all extroverted
like their trucks appear to be?
The answer to the above is no,
no, no and no! The oilfields, like
every other profession, relies
very heavily upon the persona of
the introverted... its just that behind the wheel of their extroverted trucks one would assume
everyone working there is extroverted and it is just so not so.
The truck, the tool, the vehicle
for delivery, is ubiquitous to
everyone there. The conditions
and the culture dictate this requirement.

Inside these trucks the drivers

come in every type and style of
persona imaginable. Its just that
at first look (by the type of tool
that is used everywhere by
everyone), the big powerful
dirty trucks would indicate that
the whole oilfields operations
are run by the extroverted and

we know this cannot be completely true. There are surveyors,

accountants, lawyers, an army of
engineers, analysts, regulators,
inspectors to name just some of
those inclined to be introverted
by profession. All of which
brings me to the similarities in
our business with these dirty
pick-up trucks, and what to do
about it especially if you yourself are more the introverted
type.

Our business is presented to

the world by big bold beautiful
artwork skillfully crafted by advertising and graphic artists. We
have eye-catching videos, and
glamorous websites. The message of the company is also big
bold in-your-face challenging.
The grand meetings around the
country on an on-going basis,
and the BIG blow-out of the biannual convention are an extravaganza of pageantry, noise,
chest-thumping excitement and
masses of people. The awards
and recognition programs are
stage-managed affairs where
plaques, sculptures, rings and
fantastic company trips are
awarded for accomplishment
and publicised on the company
TV network or in front of large
gatherings of company associates. The very nature of sales

well. As an outside observer you
would likely begin to wonder if
there are any introverts in this
very seemingly extroverted environment. The truth is just like
the dirty pickup trucks mentioned above, there are very successful introverts in our business
who have a huge influence on
the production of our company
and I will make a few suggestions as to how they achieved
this accomplishment.
To begin with, there is often a
common principle... where businesses at heart start with a visionary person finding a way to
surround themselves with a team
of good people then she (or he)
works hard to help them become
successful. In this light, the introvert (in order to accomplish
the gathering together of people
in the business for a period of
time and in certain important instances) must act like an extrovert. Acting like an extrovert
will make you feel more positive, even if this is for short periods of time, say ten minutes.

eptember has been a

month filled up with energy for me following the
WIP and CLC. Its a calling for
me to restart my business in a
new direction with new thoughts
for change!

In the past 18 years, Chris and

I have worked hard for our
Primerica Dream and this
dream-come-true with our Full
Ownership in Year 2013. Whats
next and why? This question has
been in my mind for the past
year and I finally got my personal answers after these two
events.

Primerica did provide us a

great platform for having our
dream come true, now what can
we be giving back to the company? This is my why to continue this journey by taking up

the leadership in building RVPs.

Glenn Williams shared with us,
Leaders are not measured by
their level of success... but by
their teams level of response to
their leadership and value, and
how many lives we can impact
together... its time to talk about
the team success, the team cash
and the team promotions!
By taking up the torch of leadership, I promised myself to have
a fresh start with my team leaders by having our coming intensive 90 days filled with
purposeful activities. Time
Management = Choice Management. Good choice management can determine good
activity management. With good
activity management, we can
excel during our coming 90 days
to close out 2014 strong and
have a great beginning in 2015!

During these two great events,

we heard and learned through
lots of the inspiring leadership
stories. All those stories have
one thing in common, be a victor instead of a victim after facing adversity in life. Take 100%
responsibility for your life because for each incident that happens, your response will
determine your future. Event +
Response = Outcome (E+R =
O). Conquer the fear. Never
give up. Believe in yourself (and
dont doubt yourself because of
