In total we now have 260 acres of 40 year old vines on

the Fordwich Sill. Our total vineyard area is over 320
acres which is sufficient vineyard to ensure we grow
all of our own fruit for the Margan label. We aim for
low yields to ensure maximum flavour concentration
and generally crop our vines at between one and two
tonnes to the acre, depending on vintage and variety.

Andrew Thomas Motel Block Shiraz 2009.

The fruit was sourced off 2.8 hectares of vines planted
in 1967 that are situated on our property. These vines
produce extremely low yields with high skin to fruit
ratio berries, which in turn produce a very concentrated
juice. The wine was released in may this year and only
350 cases were made...we now have less than 20 cases
left. At the Small Winemakers Show it won 2 trophies.
Best Open Vintage Shiraz and Best Red Wine In Show. For
those of you that had a chance to visit us and taste it
you would probably agree with the judges.
Unfortunately we dont have enough left to put in the
packs. We sincerely apologise for this, as the wine sold
out before we realised how little we had left in our
warehouse.

Broke

What a lot of Rot!

Whether your palate generally enjoys sweet or dry whites,
most find the enigmatic botrytis Semillon a luscious,
textured and some would say sensual dessert wine worthy of
fine company and special occasions.
It is an interesting fact that the driest white wines and the
sweetest white sold at Hermitage Road Cellars are both
made from Semillon grapes. This begs the question - how is
such a delightfully full flavoured and complex wine made
from a grape variety that is known for producing a wine that
is typically dry, clean and bright.
The answer lies in a fungus noble rot or botrytis cineraria.
The fungal spores occur naturally in vineyards and can
actually cause significant damage to wine grape. However,
the same rot is encouraged to form on bunches where a
botrytis dessert wine is the intended result. The vines are
very late harvested and, as the fungus covers the bunches,
the spores enter the fruit allowing the moisture in the grapes
to weep as well as sucking much of the water from the
grapes.
The result is a very unattractive rotting and dehydrated
bunch but the wine made from these grapes is concentrated
in sugars and exquisite aromas and flavours.
The Botrytis wine sold currently at Hermitage Road Cellars is
the 2009 Margan Botrytis Semillon. This is an excellent
example of this style of wine and oozes apricot, marmalade
and honey flavours a truly excellent marriage with your
choice of cheeses.
Cheers,
Terry.
