UNIT 1 LESSON 1

Grammar Its a lie!

Activity
Groupwork: True/False game.

Focus
was/were

Preparation
Make one copy of the worksheet for every three
students in the class. Cut this into cards.

Procedure
Place a pack of cards
on the table in front of
you. Take the top card
and use the prompt
written on it to make
a sentence, e.g.

Where were you

on the
weekend?

I was in New York on

the weekend.

A LIE

Ask the class if the

statement is true or a lie.

Show the class the prompt written on the card.

Write up the prompt and the sentence.
Do another example with a truth card.
Divide the class into groups of three. If the class does
not divide into threes, allow a group of four or allow
two students to work together as one.
Place a pack of cards in the middle of each group.
Tell the class the rules of the game:
1 Take it in turns to take a card. Keep it hidden from
the other students in the group.
2 Answer the question on the card with a true
sentence or a lie.
3 The student on your left decides if your sentence
is true or a lie. If he or she is correct give him or
her the card. If he or she is wrong, give the card to
the other student.
4 The student with the most cards at the end of the
game is the winner.

Variation
Give a choice of adjectives to add to the sentences:
amazing
awful
boring

excellent
exciting
expensive

fantastic
great
nice

terrible
wonderful

Include one of the adjectives in your example:

I was in New York on the weekend. It was amazing!
