ICI Pakistan Limited is a subsidiary of ICI Plc, UK. It was set up


as a public limited company in Pakistan in 1952. ICI's presence in
this part of the world however predates the formation of the
public limited company and indeed, Pakistan itself. Today, ICI
Pakistan manufactures and sells a range of industrial and
consumer products, including Polyester Staple Fiber, Soda Ash,
Sodium Bicarbonate, Paints, Specialty Chemicals, Agrochemicals,
and arranges manufacture on a toll basis of Pharmaceutical
products as well as trading in various specialized chemicals
including Polyurethane, Acrylics and Titanium Dioxide for use in
industries in Pakistan. Earlier this year the Company's PTA
business was demerged to be housed in Pakistan PTA Ltd, which is
also an ICI Plc subsidiary.

asset. The Human Resource Department provides professional
support to the entire organization to ensure that business goals
are realized through people whose own personal aspirations are
also met.

The aim of this department is to ensure that highly motivated


and professionally competent people are available within the
organization. By adopting progressive personnel policies and
providing competitive emoluments and perquisites, the Human
Resource Department seeks to maintain ICI's position as a
preferred employer in the job market.

Training and Development of staff is considered to be a core


value at ICI Pakistan. This is an essential responsibility of every
Manager and is a part of his Key Result Area'. The Company has a

very proactive Corporate Training Department, which apart from


facilitating most of individual training needs, also provides
extensive in-house training and consultancy, to all Business Areas
and Functions.

It is ICI Pakistan's policy to encourage healthy trade union


activity. The aim is to achieve a meaningful and productive
relationship with the employees and unions, in order to create an
effective process for resolving issues and seeking ways to bring
about improvements in the terms and conditions of employment,
as well as enhancement in productivity and efficiency.

Today ICI Pakistan employs approximately 1800 people who are

Social initiative and involvement, at ICI Pakistan, takes the form


of active support of organisations, providing essential services to
community members, particularly in the field of education and
medical assistance.

ICI Pakistan provides financial assistance to charitable projects,


non-profit organisations and developmental initiatives. Over the
years a host of worthy causes have received financial support and
assistance,

through sponsorship,

for

uplift

initiatives

and

community development projects.

Celebrating Pakistan's Golden Jubilee Year of Independence, ICI


Pakistan in 1997, while supporting other Jubilee projects, made
two very significant contributions to the City of the Quaid.

The Company constructed a Fountain and Roundabout in Karachi


dedicated to the Quaid. The Jinnah Fountain, in addition to being
a commemorative to the Golden Jubilee of Pakistan, also
underscores ICI Pakistan's contribution to the urban renewal of

the City. In 1997, ICI Pakistan entered into an agreement with


the British Council to contribute, as a sole sponsor, to the
construction of a management development centre within the
premises of the Council site at Karachi. Conceived in response to
the needs and ever increasing demands of the Country's
management professionals and academia, the ICI Pakistan-British
Council Management Centre will be positioned to house and
provide, up-to-date management information and training in
progressive management skills, knowledge and techniques. While
the construction of this management development service marks
the Company's contribution to the Golden Jubilee, the sole
sponsorship of the centre reaffirms ICI Pakistan's commitment
to the cause of education and professional training in the
Country.

ICI Pakistan also continues to support Eye Clinics programmes,


held with the assistance of the Layton Rehmatulla Benevolent
Trust (LRBT) doctors, at the ICI Pakistan Winnington Hospital,
Soda Ash Works, Khewra. The two day monthly eye clinics include
OPD consultation as well as major and minor surgeries and
refractions.

Over

the

years,

this

programme

has

been

strengthened and rationalized, to appropriately respond to


increasing community demands for Eye Care Services'.

The ICI Pakistan Foundation, setup in 1991, serves as a platform


through which the Company's philanthropic and social aid
initiatives are channelled.

As part of its community development initiatives, the ICI


Pakistan Foundation has contributed to a series of building and
construction projects, in and around the Khewra community,

where the Company's Soda Ash plant is located. Among others,


these projects include schools, mosques and parks used by the
local community in Khewra and the nearby village of Pind Dadan
Khan. Over the years, the Foundation has also been providing
financial support to the Country's various non profit and

SAFETY

HEALTH

&

ENVIRONMENT

Good Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) performance is


essential to the continued success of ICI. The SHE management
system is integrated into the company's overall structure and
ensures

that

goals

are

established,

resources

allocated,

performance monitored and corrective action taken as required.


It encourages continuous improvement in performance and has
the flexibility to cope with what may be quite widely differing
needs around the world, both today and in the future. In recent
years

continuous

improvement

has

been

achieved

with

combination of the dedication and commitment of all ICI


employees, good management and thorough training, worldwide. A
new set of tough SHE targets for the next five years have been
established to take ICI into the new millennium. These targets

have

been

developed

to

deliver

further

improvement

in

performance, to help meet increasing SHE demands in the


manufacture of new and better products from less raw materials
more efficiently, to secure a more sustainable and a more
competitive future. These targets are called Challenge 2000.

All work related injuries and illnesses are preventable. Our


goal is zero harm.

All escapes of hazardous materials can be prevented and


emission in the course of operation will progressively be
reduced towards zero.

FUNCTION
RECRUITMENT PROCESS

ICI Pakistan has a policy of recruiting highly qualified and


experienced individuals not only to maintain its high standards
but also to grow to greater levels of excellence. The Company
makes all possible efforts to employ the best individuals for its
various functions and business units, who would, in time, prove to
be an asset for the organization.

The recruitment process at ICI Pakistan is one of the toughest in


Pakistan. They have a five-step process, which is listed below.

1) They carry out an initial test of intelligence in different


institutes of Pakistan.

2) There is another aptitude test for those who meet the


required criteria in the initial screening test.

3) Those who pass the test or are above the required the cut-off
score have a screening interview taken by anybody from the HR
Department.

4) A group discussion is held among the candidates supervised by


some department head to determine the communication abilities
of the candidate. It is a sort of an Assessment Center.

5) Finally, any member of the Board of Directors is then asked to


screen the candidates through an interview, who then decides
whether the candidate is to be recruited or not.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Training and Development of staff is considered to be a core


value at ICI Pakistan. This is an essential responsibility of every
Manager and is a part of his Key Result Area'. The Company has a
very proactive Corporate Training Department, which apart from
facilitating most of individual training needs, also provides
extensive in-house training and consultancy, to all Business Areas
and Functions.

Their focus is on continuous training of an employee. There is a


Training Manager to try and develop new training programs and
arrange workshops or any other courses that may help in the
employee development. Many of the employees are sent abroad to
attend different courses that may increase their future
productivity. Some are even posted abroad for some period of

time so as to get a different environmental experience. So all in


all, they have a very good training program, which keeps the
employees up to date with the latest developments that are
taking place nowadays.

MANAGEMENT TRAINEE SCHEME

At ICI, they believe that talent and potential are traits that
should be identified early on in a person's career and should then
be nurtured and developed to produce high quality managers for
senior level positions.

In line with this philosophy, we Management Trainee Scheme is


designed with an aim to hire and groom young high potential
graduates for senior level corporate jobs. The process is fairly
in-depth and ensures that we successfully pick the crme of
graduates from universities all over the world.

Many people have endorsed this when we had an informal with


some of the employees. They said that ICI had the policy of
encouraging innovativeness and also rewarding them very well. The
HR Dept. makes extra efforts to try and create a bond between

employees and they stay for as long as possible. In addition to
that ICI has the best Safety and Health program. It is called the
SHE and is implemented throughout the ICI Group.

GOVERNMENT LEGISLATION

There are many laws that have been made by the Government of
Pakistan that have to be adhered to by all the companies. ICI
claims to abide by all these laws and there have been no
complaints so far from any Government department of any
violation whatsoever. Some of the laws that apply are related to
the Provident and Gratuity Funds, Workers Profit Participation
Fund, Industrial Relations Act, Income Tax Laws and many
others.

LABOUR UNIONS

It is ICI Pakistan's policy to encourage healthy trade union

When asked whether they faced any problems regarding loss of


employees, they refused outright. They lose hardly one to two
employees

in

year

who

leave

their

jobs

because

of

dissatisfaction. Most of the employees are more than satisfies


with the work environment, compensation and other benefits that
are offered by ICI that is why turnover rate is low. Same goes
for Absenteeism. All the employees are very regular in their
attendance and work.
