Nagoya, pop. 2,272,000 (as of Jan. 2014), the capital
of Aichi Prefecture, is conveniently located in the very heart of
central Japan, one of the nations key industrial zones. The
fourth largest city in Japan, Nagoya forms the core of industry
and tourism in the district. Industry within the city originally
centered around pottery-making. Today, however, the heavy
and chemical industries predominate as well as the traditional
light industries, producing cars, ships, rolling stock, machinery,
plastics, cloisonn, ceramics, timepieces, toys, woodworks,
musical instruments, and paper products. Historically, Nagoya
was a typical castletown of feudal Japan built in the 16th century. Ieyasu Tokugawa (15421616), founder of the Tokugawa
Shogunate, built the famous Nagoya Castle as a fortified residence for his son, whose descendants continued to reside there

Nagoya Castle, 10 min. by bus from Nagoya Sta.,
or 5-min. walk from Shiyakusho (City Hall) Sta. of the subway
Meijo Line, is an outstanding example of early modern castle
architecture. Reduced to ashes during World War II, it was
rebuilt in its original form in 1959. It features a new five-storied
ferroconcrete main donjon, 48 m high and mounted by a pair of
golden shachi (orca). The rooms on the first through the fifth
floors are used to display art treasures that escaped the fires
during the war, while the seventh floor serves as a scenic observatory. In the display rooms are exhibited some pieces of
fusuma-e (paintings on sliding doors) and ceiling-panel paintings,
which were formerly used in the lords mansion on the castle
grounds. It houses a total of 1,047 such paintings, all of which are
registered as Important Cultural Properties. In Oct. each year, a
chrysanthemum show is held in the grounds. Open: 9:0016:30

Uraku-en Gardenis a traditional Japanese-style garden located on the premises of the Meitetsu Inuyama Hotel. The
beautiful garden contains buildings of historic interest, such as
the Jo-an Teahouse, a famous National Treasure. The teahouse
was originally designed and constructed in 1618 by Urakusai
Oda, a younger brother of the warlord Nobunaga Oda, during
his secluded life as a priest in Kyoto. Urakusai was a great tea
ceremony master and the founder of the Uraku-ryu school. The
teahouse is open to the public once a month. 7-min. walk from

Museum Meiji Mura, in southeast Inuyama
City, is a unique museum village which preserves valuable monuments of the dawn of modern Japan. The village occupies an area
of about 100 ha. over the rolling hills along the southern shores
of Lake Iruka. The exhibits in the museum, more than 60 in number, are all genuine historic edifices from various parts of Japan
which were dismantled, transported and reconstructed there
with great ingenuity. The highlights include the Imperial Carriage
of Emperor Meiji, the mansion of Tsugumichi Saigo, a distinguished statesman of the day, St. Johns church and the old
Imperial Hotel designed by famous American architect Frank
Lloyd Wright in 1923. Some other artifacts and materials are
also on display. The Meiji Era, 18681912, is the period when
Japan awakened from its long isolation from the world and started its rapid progress toward national modernization. Open:
