In their continued efforts to assert

public access onto public lakes & Crown
land, 21 members of the public, including
some members of NV Fish & Game Club
along with family members, went fishing
on Corbett Lake this past weekend.
They hopped the fence on the public
Min. of Hwys right-of-way where Hwy
97C grazes the edge of the lake, and
went directly onto the ice. Provincial
fishing regulations say that they can
catch 5 fish each, per day on Corbett.
But before long, 2 police cars swooped
down from Kane Valley Rd. where theyd
been surveying the fishermen, and
charged the 13 adults with tresspassing
on Corbett Lake Lodge private property.
While most left the lake at the request
of police, a few protestors remained at
their fishing holes, dead sure theyd not
stepped a foot onto private property.
They eventually reconsidered, however,
when 2 RCMP members and a Corbett
Lake Lodge owner returned & threatened to handcuff them and take them
into the station if they did not leave.
The incident leaves the fishermen
wondering how local landowners can believe and convince the RCMP to uphold their faulty belief that they
actually own the public lakes, including
Minnie & Stoney Lakes (on Douglas Lake
Ranch), as well as public access roads that
have accessed Crown lands for many
decades. Local ranchers & trappers who
have had grazing rights & trap line permits on Crown Land for years, now find
themselves unable to access them.
Raspberry Rd. is such a public road,
and NV Fish & Game members are actively using it despite Douglas Lk padlocks
on Min. of Hwys gates on public roads.

Business Walk 2015

Community Futures Nicola Valley,

the Chamber & the City are banding together to canvass businesses to find out
their views on local economic conditions
and how to improve thms. Theyre working together to get a pulse of the business
community & build relationships to
stimulate the economy.
Volunteers will fan out around the
community on Thurs. Jan 29, after a kickoff event starting at 9am at City Hall. The
Merritt Business Walk 2015 is a survey
consisting of 7 questions that should take
less than 5 minutes. Certain issues will be
able to be followed up if necessary, and
once the overall info is gathered, collated
& analyzed, theyll be looking for
broader strategies to support & stimulate
the health of local businesses.
