What is Metadata?
When files are created, opened, edited, printed, or saved in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or a PDF
program, those files contain information and/or data that you do not want others outside of the
organization to discover. Metadata is also found in audio, visual, image, xml, and OpenOffice file
types. The software industry refers to this information as metadata, also known as data about
data. For a complete list of metadata types please refer to the Help files.

Launch Metadata Assistant Using Drag and Drop
Use this method for files that are saved locally or to a network location.

Confirm that the Metadata Assistant 4 application icon is on the Windows Desktop.
Point to the file(s) to be cleaned.
Click and drag the file(s) over the Metadata Assistant 4 icon.
Watch for the tip that reads: Open with Metadata Assistant 4.1.
Release the mouse button.

Launch Metadata Assistant Using Right-Click
Use this method for files that are saved locally or to a network location. Single or multiple files
can be processed at a time using this method.
1. Point to the file and right-click, or choose multiple files by holding down Ctrl key when
selecting.
2. Choose Check Metadata.

Use this method as an alternative to Drag-and-Drop, and Right-Click.
1. Click the Windows Start button.
2. Click All Programs.
3. In the Metadata Assistant folder, click Metadata Assistant 4.

1. Use this method to analyze an open file.
2. Click the File tab and then click Info.
3. Click Find and Clean Metadata.

Help Files
The Help files are a great resource for learning the ins and outs of the Metadata Assistant.
Simply click on the Help button located in the top right-hand corner of any Metadata Assistant
user interface to access a comprehensive guide.
Support
Located within the Help files is a section titled Support. In this section there are several different
levels of useful tools to troubleshoot issues.

Under Contact Us is a section titled Help Expedite the Troubleshooting Process By Having the
Following Information Handy. Answer these questions and send them to the support team with
the initial question to help to expedite a solution.
