Take a look at this, What will happen if I will
drop nail in the container filled with water?
Correct! What about this ice, I will
drop it again with the same container filled
with water. What do you think will happen?
Very good! Based on the activity,
What is the reason why some objects float
and sink?
Yes! You learned a while ago, one
factor that affects the floating and sinking of
an object is due to the density, How?
Very good! Now, see the density table.
What is the density of water?
What about the nail?
How do you compare their densities?
Yes! So it sinks, what about the density
of ice as you compare to water?

Now, take a look at the figure,

originally the weight of the block is 10N.
When it is submerged on water the weight
down to 8N.
[ weight in air (W air= 10N)]
[weight in water (W water=8N]
Is there any loss of weight happened?
Very good! How much weight loss?
Correct! So, there is apparent loss.
By the way what is meant by apparent?
Exactly! It seems the block loses
weight when it is submerged in water but if
you removed the block the original weight
takes place.
The apparent loss of weight is the
buoyant force experienced by the object. How
much is the buoyant force exerted on the
object?
Correct! What about the weight of the water
displaced?
Now, what can we conclude then
about the buoyant force of the object and the
water displaced?
If the buoyant force is equal to the weight of
the object submerged in fluid, What do you
think will happen on the object?
Very good! What about if the buoyant
force is greater than the weight, What will
happen on the object?
Yes correct! Then, if the buoyant force
is less, What will happen?
Yes. The buoyant force is greater in a
denser liquid than in a less dense one. For
example I will drop this egg on pure water.
What happened?
What if I add salt on fresh/pure water what
happened to the egg?
So, what can you conclude on fresh water as
compared to sea water
Excellent! By the time I poured salt on fresh
water its density increases.

Maam Archimedes
Yes! Actually the relationship of buoyancy and

displaced liquid was been discovered by
Archimedes.
In his principle, it states that the
buoyant force experienced by an object
immersed in fluid is equal to the weight of the
liquid displaced.
Lets go back to the illustration a
while back, the buoyant force experienced by
the object is 2N and the weight of the liquid
displaced is also 2N. Are they equal?
Hence, it talks to the principle of Archimedes.

Very good! Do you have any idea how
Archimedes formulated his principle?
Actually, when the crown was
made the king asked Archimedes to solve his
problem because goldsmith might cheat him.
The king doesnt know if the crown was really
made by a pure gold or there is an impurity
other unto it. One day while taking his bath
he noticed that the volume of water displaced
on the tub is equal to his body mass
submerged
on
the
water.
(density=
mass/volume). So, he measures the density of
the crown by immersing on the water and he
found out that the goldsmith didnt cheat the
king.

submarine sinks?

Maam it states that the buoyant

force experienced by an object is
equal to the weight of the fluid
displaced.
There is a ballast tank inside. In

order for the submarine to sink
ballast tank is filled with water.
Very good! So, the density of the submarine

plus the density of water is greater than the
density of sea water resulting to the sinking of
the submarine.
