This document proposes expanding the use of theoretically exact dimensions (TED) by classifying geometric characteristics on technical drawings into three groups. Group 2 includes dimensions that provide informative control data for interpreting tolerances in Group 1. The document suggests that dimensions in Group 2, such as setting dimensions for alignments, should be framed to indicate they are theoretically exact but provide control information. Several examples are provided to illustrate how framing could be used for dimensions that control the interpretation of tolerances without being toleranced themselves. In conclusion, framing all controlling but theoretically exact dimensions could provide consistency and avoid confusion over which dimensions are toleranced.

Expanded meaning of framing of theoretically exact

dimensions, TED
Geometrical characteristics on drawing documentation and similar can be classified in
several ways. One such a classification that can be used as a basis for an expansion of the
range of use for theoretically exact dimensions, TED, is given below:
Group 1: Geometrical characteristics that are toleranced by direct indication on drawing,
general tolerance, other standards reference or corresponding.
Group 2: Geometrical characteristics, which are informative data of controlling type for
interpretation of characteristics belonging to group 1. Included here are, for example,
TED for geometrical tolerances.
Group 3: Geometrical characteristics, which are informative data of non-controlling type
for interpretation of characteristics belonging to group 1. Included here are, for example,
informative dimensions placed in brackets.
Based on this classification, the following rule can be formulated: Geometrical
characteristics, which are informative data and which belong to group 2 shall be
framed in the drawing documentation.
Examples:
A: Current range of use, theoretically exact dimensions for geometrical tolerances.
B: Setting dimensions
Example B1:
10

10

0,02 A B

Interpretation: Dimensions 10 constitute informative dimensions that control the

interpretation of the run-out tolerance. Alignment of the datums is made according to the
setting dimensions 10, which define the two sections used for alignment. These setting
dimensions are theoretically exact dimensions.

Example B2-1:

18 S7

0,1 A B C
A

290 0,1

60

0,04

98

80

18 S7

Interpretation: Dimension 80 constitutes an informative dimension that controls

alignment, coordinate system and thus direction of measurement when measuring
dimensions 290 0,1 and position 0,1.
Alignment of coordinate system, direction of measurement, is made so that the setting
dimension 80 is exact.
This dimensioning is suitable, for example, when fixing the part in position by means of a
cylindrical guide pin in hole B and a flat guide pin in hole C. The flat guide pin shall be
oriented in accordance with the rough drawing below.

80

Example B2-2:
18 S7

0,1 A B C
A

290

60

0,04

98

80 0,05

18 S7

290

Interpretation: Dimension 290 constitutes an informative dimension that controls

alignment, coordinate system and thus direction of measurement when measuring
dimensions 80 0,05 and position 0,1.
Alignment of coordinate system, direction of measurement, is made so that the setting
dimension 290 is exact.
This dimensioning is suitable, for example, when fixing the part in position by means of a
cylindrical guide pin in hole B and a flat guide pin in hole C. The flat guide pin shall be
oriented in accordance with the rough drawing below.

Example B2-3:
18 S7

0,1 A B C
A

60

0,04

290,4 0,05
15,4

98

18 S7

Interpretation: Dimension 15,4 constitutes an informative dimension that controls

alignment, coordinate system, and thus direction of measurement when measuring
dimensions 290,4 0,1 and position 0,1.
Alignment of coordinate system, direction of measurement, is made so that the setting
dimension 15,4 is exact.
This dimensioning is suitable, for example, when fixing the part in position by means of a
cylindrical guide pin in hole B and a flat guide pin in hole C. The flat guide pin shall be
oriented in accordance with the rough drawing below. It is also suitable when two round
guide pins are used on a non-rigid part.

15,4

An alternative dimensioning to example B2-3 is the following where the interrelationship

between the guide pin holes is dimensioned with a position tolerance:

18 S7

0,1 A B C
A

290,4

60

0,04

98

79,88

18 S7
0,1 A B

40

C: Extension of projected tolerance zone.

Interpretation: Framed dimension 40 constitutes an informative dimension that controls

the interpretation of the extension of the position requirement and is therefore framed.

D: Indication of restrictive zone for tolerance.

30

150

Interpretation: Dimensions 30 and 150 are informative dimensions that control the
interpretation of the extension of the restrictive requirement.

Orientation of tolerance zone.

Interpretation: Angle is an informative dimension that controls the interpretation of

the run-out requirement and shall be framed.
Interpretation: Angle is an informative dimension that controls the interpretation of the
run-out requirement and shall be framed.
E: Determination of dimension for a specified section.

Interpretation: The concentricity tolerance applies to a specified section. The axial

position of the section is determined by dimension 6 that is an informative dimension that
controls the interpretation of the concentricity requirement and therefore shall be framed.
The indication can also be used as determination of position for a dimension, for
example, diameter in a specified section of a cone.
Conclusion:
There are probably more cases where it would be possible to use framing in this way. If
there is consequence, you will obtain the effect that a dimension that is controlling for a
tolerance requirement and where the actual tolerance is given in another indication (that
is group 2 in my introduction) always can be identified as a controlling but theoretically
exact dimension and that it can never be interpreted as a toleranced characteristic; for

8
example, it can never be confused with generally toleranced characteristics. The good
point about this is that the same way of marking, using a frame, can be used for all these
types of drawing indications.
