Surface preparation of concrete

A description on how to prepare a
concrete surface prior to the application of decorative coatings
Adequate and proper surface preparation of concrete is directly related
to the service life of any coating system applied on top of the concrete
This code of practice deals with the following types of concrete:
cementitious fibre boards
Smooth-poured concrete

New concrete
Before sur face preparation can take
place the concrete must be fully cured.
This takes 28 days at 20 deg. C for normal Portland Cement and 14 days at
20 deg. C for rapidly hardening Portland
cement. At higher temperatures curing
membranes such as wax emulsions are
used to retard the evaporation of water
so as to ensure complete curing of the
concrete. The water content of the concrete should be 4% w/w or less prior to
the application of coatings. The tensile
strength of the concrete should be minimum 1.2 MN/m2 (174psi) for the application of decorative coatings in lightduty ser vice.
Surface preparation of cementitous
fibre boards
Broom clean with a clean industrial stiffbristled broom to remove most surface
dust and other loosely adhering solid

contaminants.
Sealing and filing

Major imper fections in the concrete
must be repaired with concrete or with
cement mor tar. Minor imper fections,
cracks and crevices may be repaired with
water-borne or solvent-borne fillers. Full
skim coats of filler may be applied to
smooth the surface. Only one full coat
of filler should be specified since the
filler constitutes the weakest part of the
paint system. Application of primer/sealers before and after application of filler
is essential to ensure good intercoat
adhesion. In principle clear sealers have
better penetration and dust binding properties than pigmented sealers.
Vacuum clean with a heavy duty type

industrial vacuum cleaner to provide an
essentially dust-free surface.
Sur face Preparation of smoothpoured Concrete
By broom cleaning, vacuum cleaning, air
blast cleaning, water cleaning and steam
cleaning. Broom cleaning consist of
sweeping the surface with a clean industrial stiff bristled broom or similar.
Sweepings must be removed from the
immediate work area.
Vacuum cleaning with heavy duty type
of equipment is recommended to provide a dust-free surface.
Surface Preparation of Previously

Coated Concrete:
High pressure fresh water washing is
recommended to remove loosely adhering paint, dust and other surface contaminants. Detergent may be added to
the water to remove grease. Rinse with
fresh water if detergent has been used.
Hard scraping and grinding may be required to remove old non-adhering paint.

after application of a primer/sealer, further scraping is necessary, or perhaps

a blasting nozzle held about 0.5 metre
from the surface. It is intended to remove debris, dust, dirt, loosely adhering laitance and concrete from walls and
ceilings and to provide a dust-free surface.
Water cleaning is intended to remove
dust, dirt and water soluble surface contaminants. Use a stream of clean fresh
water and scrub with a stiff-bristled
brush. Steam cleaning is intended for
removal of heavy deposits of oil and
grease.
Steam cleaning consists of cleaning the
sur face with a jet of high pressure
steam, sufficient to remove contaminants. Detergents may be added to the
water where required for the removal of
oil and grease.
Acceptance: The surfaces shall be free
of oil, grease, loosely adhering concrete
and other contaminants.

New concrete
Before sur face preparation can take

Surface preparation - wood

Summary of surface preparation wood:
Bare wood: Round off edges. Sand
paper to smooth surface; dust off.
Seal knots, wipe oily spots with solvent.
Primed/varnished/painted wood in
good condition: Wash down with a
suitable detergent and allow to dry.
Sand to remove loose material and
to flatten the surface. Remove dust.
If old varnish or paint is in a poor
condition, complete removal of the
existing system is necessary. Remove by flame cleaning or a suitable
paint remover. Rinse with fresh water, allow to dry, sand, and remove
dust.
New woodwork
Dry for internal woodwork means max.
12% moisture content (by weight) of the
wood.
Dry for external woodwork means max.
15-18% moisture content by weight. For
well ventilated constructions max. 20%
can be accepted.
For some types of wood a grainfiller may
be required. The filler should be compatible with the paint system to avoid
delamination.
Major cracks and imperfections to be
filled once or more. Nails and other
metal sur faces to be overcoated must
be sealed separately with a suitable
primer prior to applying the full system.
Grade of sandpaper to be chosen in
accordance with the finish desired.
Woodwork previously treated

If the existing varnish/paint is adhering
well then the following surface preparation is recommended:
Wash thoroughly with a suitable detergent to remove contaminants. Please
note that oil and grease can be difficult
to see. Rinse with fresh water and allow
to dry. If necessary, scrape and sandpaper thoroughly loose paints, dust off
and touch up with paint.
Paint systems
Wood penetrants
Will penetrate and impregnate the surface of the wood and make a good key for
subsequent coats.
Woodstains
These systems will impregnate and colour the top 1-3 mm of the wood. The grains
in the wood will therefore still be visible. The normal system consist of a clear
sealer succeeded by 2-3 coats of the woodstain itself. Woodstains allow the wood
to breathe.
96.03 Cleaning
Varnishes
These systems provide a watertight system with only little penetration into the
wood. They are normally clear and the grains will therefore also be visible. The
normal system consists of 3 coats of varnish, where the first coat is to be diluted.
Please consult code of practice no.

96.23 on compatibility to ensure that
the new and old paint systems are compatible.
Paints
These systems hide completely, i.e. it is impossible to see the nature of the
substrate. The normal system consists of a primer, an undercoat and a topcoat.
Flame clean e.g. with a gasflame or use

a paint remover. It is important to remove all loose material and preferably
remove all existing varnish/paint in order to obtain a smooth and even finish.

Different types of wood
The same type of surface preparation
applies no matter which type of wood is
treated:
The exemptions are woodtypes which
are especially oily: They have to be wiped
with solvents and allowed to dry prior to
paint application.
Wood impregnated with tar-containing
wood preser vatives will sometimes
bleed through subsequent coats. This
cannot be avoided.

Why prepare the surface?
Evaluations of paint failures have shown,
that approximately 85% of the failures
are caused by insufficient surface preparation. For this reason alone, it is obvious that surface preparation is critical.
Surface Preparation, Steel
1. All oil and grease must be removed
by cleaning with a suitable detergent/emulsifier followed by fresh
water hosing.
2. All water soluble salts and welding

smoke should be removed during the
above process. If no oil or grease is
present, salts and welding smoke
should be removed by fresh water
hosing or steam cleaning. It might
be necessar y to scrub to remove
welding smoke.
3. Abrasive blasting to achieve the required cleanliness and surface profile. For certain areas, power tool
cleaning may be sufficient. A surface
preparation grade of "Sa 2 1/2 according to ISO 8501-1:1988 and a
sur face profile of Rz = 40-80 microns/1.6-3.2 mils are generally recommended.
4. Dust should be carefully removed
from all surfaces prior to paint application, e.g. by vacuum cleaning.
Surface Preparation, Metal Sprayed

Steel
Metal sprayed coatings should be
overcoated as soon as possible to avoid
zinc and aluminium salts forming on the
surface. In that case no further surface
preparation are required.
If already weathered, high pressure hosing and removal of zinc/aluminium salts
by stiff brushes or in severe cases by
abrasive blasting is required.
Surface Preparation, Aluminium
The surface preparation of aluminium
is similar to that of steel, with the
following comments:
Aluminium is vulnerable to chloride
attack and liquids of a pH value above
8.5. Therefore the detergent must be a
neutral solvent, free of chlorides and
chlorinated solvents.
Surface Preparation, Galvanized

Steel
The procedure of surface preparation on
galvanised steel is as follows:
Furthermore, the abrasive material must

be free of chloride, copper, nickel and
steel. The best result is obtained by

corundum abrasive with a grain size of
maximum 0.5 mm propelled by a
pressure of maximum 4 bar.
Surface Preparation, Stainless Steel
by cleaning with a detergent/emulsifier free of chlorides followed by
clean fresh water hosing. Alternatively, steam cleaning followed by
thorough fresh water washing is acceptable.
2. Stainless steel has to be treated similarly to mild steel when heavy duty
systems are specified, i. e. by abrasive blasting. However it is important
that the abrasives are free of zinc,
iron and chlorides. Suitable
abrasives are corundum and ordinary
silica sand.
Note: Abrasive blasting may be necessary depending on the purpose for coating and the coating system.
1. Removal of loose metal, burnt-in zinc

ash and burnt-in flux by grinding. This
is done by using an orbital grinder,
cup wheels, abrasive paper, whichever is the most suitable.
2. Removal of oil and grease and zinc
salts using pure steam or a steam/
hot water mixture with an addition of
a mild alkaline cleaner.
After steam cleaning, carry out high
pressure fresh water hosing, preferably hot, with detergent added, followed by fresh water hosing.
3. Abrasive sweep blasting to establish
a surface profile in the galvanized
coating and remove zinc corrosion
products.

Brush Application

Brush Application
Summary of Brush application:
For small and irregular surfaces
Well suited for first coat of primer
Labour intensive
Please note that the outline of runs and

sagging will only become visible a few
minutes after application. It may then
be too late to remove them, and sanding of the dry paint will be required.
Equipment
A lot of factors affect the choice of a brush.
The form and quality
The length of the bristles
The composition of the bristles
Area of use
Small and irregular surfaces, pylons,
rods, lattice structures, small diameter pipes, doors, railings, woodwork, etc.
Stripe coating - areas where the
specified film thickness cannot be
obtained by spray application only
Interior areas with poor ventilation
Touch up - normally relatively small
areas
Marginally prepared surfaces (with
slight dust, rust and dampness)
Normally, a flat brush with long bristles

or a round or oval brush is used on larger
areas as they can contain a relatively
large volume of wet paint.
A brush can be made of different kinds of bristle. The best brushes are made from
animal hairs. If the hairs are mixed with synthetic bristles, it improves the wear
resistance.
Principle
The principle of paint application with a
brush is to work the paint physically
into the pits, pores and cavities of the
substrate. At the same time, dust and
surface humidity to a certain extent will
be dispersed into the wet paint.
How to use a Brush
To obtain a suf ficient, even film
thickness, it is often necessary to apply
two coats or more. This is ensured by
"laying" the paint on the surface instead
of "dragging" it around with a lot of
action in the wet paint. The paint should
be applied and distributed with a few
strokes. If the flow is not satisfactory,
dilution with appropiate thinner may be
necessary (please consult the relevant
Product Data Sheet).
To get good wearing and a good alkali resistance, a brush made of nylon is recommended. However, the finish will not be as good as with a brush made of animal
bristle.
A broad, flat brush is used for smoothening. For areas which are difficult to
reach an angular brush can be used.
Special brushes with split-end bristles provide the best possible levelling.
Advantages
Brush application tends to displace
dust, and to some extent even moisture.
This makes the brush well-suited for
application of the first coat of primer.
Furthermore, brush application, when
done correctly is not surpassed by any
other application method when painting
rough and pitted surfaces.
Cleaning of brushes
Brushes which have been used for solvent-borne coatings should be cleaned with
solvent or special tool cleaner (please consult the relevant Product Data Sheet).
Subsequently the hairs of the brush should be rubbed with soft soap or detergent
followed by rinsing with lukewarm water.
If the brush has been used for water-borne coatings, it needs to be cleaned by
thorough rinsing with water as soon as possible. Further, cleaning can be done in
the same way as mentioned above with soap or detergent and lukewarm water. So
called "brush restorers" are used to restore bristles with dried and cured paint.
Limitations
The greatest limitation to br ush
application is that the method is slow
and therefore labour intensive. As a
general rule, it is possible for the
individual to paint 100 sqm during a
working day of 8 hours.
When application is to be done by brush
on areas where appearance is of
importance, one should choose paints
that are specially developed for brush
application. Not all paint types are suited
for application by br ush. Paints
applicable in a dry film thickness of 80
micron or more (high build paints), are
not suitable.

A brush can be made of different kinds of bristle. The best brushes are made from
animal hairs. If the hairs are mixed with synthetic bristles, it improves the wear
resistance.
Principle
The principle of paint application with a
brush is to work the paint physically
into the pits, pores and cavities of the
substrate. At the same time, dust and
surface humidity to a certain extent will
be dispersed into the wet paint.
How to use a Brush
To obtain a suf ficient, even film
thickness, it is often necessary to apply
two coats or more. This is ensured by
"laying" the paint on the surface instead
of "dragging" it around with a lot of
action in the wet paint. The paint should
be applied and distributed with a few
strokes. If the flow is not satisfactory,
dilution with appropiate thinner may be
necessary (please consult the relevant
Product Data Sheet).
To get good wearing and a good alkali resistance, a brush made of nylon is recommended. However, the finish will not be as good as with a brush made of animal
bristle.
A broad, flat brush is used for smoothening. For areas which are difficult to
reach an angular brush can be used.
Special brushes with split-end bristles provide the best possible levelling.
Advantages
Brush application tends to displace
dust, and to some extent even moisture.
This makes the brush well-suited for
application of the first coat of primer.
Furthermore, brush application, when
done correctly is not surpassed by any
other application method when painting
rough and pitted surfaces.
Cleaning of brushes
Brushes which have been used for solvent-borne coatings should be cleaned with
solvent or special tool cleaner (please consult the relevant Product Data Sheet).
Subsequently the hairs of the brush should be rubbed with soft soap or detergent
followed by rinsing with lukewarm water.
If the brush has been used for water-borne coatings, it needs to be cleaned by
thorough rinsing with water as soon as possible. Further, cleaning can be done in
the same way as mentioned above with soap or detergent and lukewarm water. So
called "brush restorers" are used to restore bristles with dried and cured paint.
Limitations
The greatest limitation to br ush
application is that the method is slow
and therefore labour intensive. As a
general rule, it is possible for the
individual to paint 100 sqm during a
working day of 8 hours.
When application is to be done by brush
on areas where appearance is of
importance, one should choose paints
that are specially developed for brush
application. Not all paint types are suited
for application by br ush. Paints
applicable in a dry film thickness of 80
micron or more (high build paints), are
not suitable.

The roller is well suited for broad even

Principle
The principle of airspray is that
atomisation is created by fine jets of
compressed air breaking up the paint
into tiny droplets and which are carried
and directed towards the substrate.
Some 500-600 times as much air as
paint is used for atomisation and the
air tends to bounce off the surface to
be painted carr ying a considerable
amount of the paint particles with it.
How to use Airspray
When spraying, the gun must be held at
a right angle to the substrate and at a
distance of approximately 20-30 cm (2/
3 -1 foot). Too close a distance will cause
wave formation and too far a distance
will cause dryspray.
The recommended atomisation pressure

is 0.2-0.5 MPa (2-5 atm.).
Safety:
Observe local safety regulations and the safety instructions given by suppliers
of equipment and paint.
Low viscosity of the paint may result in

low film thicknesses and risk of sagging.
However, high viscosity may result in orange peel and poor levelling. If needed,
thin down the paint according to the
guidelines given in the product data
sheet.
Never smoke, eat or drink while painting.

Avoid inhalation of possible solvent vapours or paint mist and contact with skin
and eyes. Wear mask and goggles.
Always take precautions against the risk of fire or explosions, ensure areas are
well ventilated.
Advantages
This method of atomisation can produce
the finest possible of finish - that is,
when carried out by a skilled craftsman.
The method is faster than brush and
roller application, but not as fast as airless spray application.
Airspray equipment should only be operated by skilled operators.

Cleaning

should be cleaned with an appropriate solvent.
Do not store the gun in a bucket of solvent at the end of the day. This can cause
scale deposits or other foreign material deposits that could clog air parts and dry

It may be difficult to get a sufficient wet
film thickness on corners and sharp
edges. With this application method
there is a tendency that paint will bounce
back.

The idea behind airless spray application is to obtain a uniform paint film
without voids or holidays, and to secure
the best possible adhesion to substrate.
When spraying, the gun should be held
at right angles and at a distance of approximately 30 cm (1 foot) to the
substrate. Try to maintain a fan width
of 20-30 cm (40-50 fan angle) and
move the gun at a constant speed. Release the trigger at the turning point of
each pass.
The result obtained from airless spray
application depends on the viscosity of
the paint. The main factors which affect
the viscosity is:
Temperature of the paint
Quantity of thinner added to the
paint.
It is preferable to reduce viscosity by

warming up the paint rather than by thinning - as thinning will increase the risk
of the paint sagging (running).
Safety:
Airless spray equipment is working with paint under high pressure. If you aim at
yourself or others the high pressurised paint may penetrate the skin and cause
serious injury.
The atomisation and the spray pattern

are determined by the pressure, the nozzle size and by the viscosity of the paint.
Therefore never aim the spray gun at your self or others.

When spraying avoid any kind of sparks. This must include sparks induced by
static electricity. Use conductive painthoses and grounded air- and hydraulic
hoses.
Advantages
Greater quantities of paint can be
applied with a more confined spray
pattern and less over-spray because
little paint fog is produced and there is
very little rebounce of paint.

Stay clear of movable parts.
Keep equipment in proper working condition, change work nozzles, and clean
filters of regular intervals.
Airless spray allows application of high

film thickness per coat and high viscosity
products.
Never dismantle equipment, nozzle etc. unless you are sure that the pressure
has been relieved and safety devices are in function.
Never leave spray equipment, nozzles etc. under pressure and without safety
devices in function.
Airless spray is much faster than air

spray. However, it will not provide the

a small tool to scrape paint of the tip. The tool can be a small brush or wooden pick
but not a metal object or scraper, which can damage the tip.

This code of practice is referring to
small hand held guns typically with a
6 litre hopper
Area of use
The hopper spray gun is a versatile piece
of equipment for civil/building projects.
It is ideal for the application of e.g. water-borne textured coatings with or without aggregate, spray plasters, fillers and
cement rendering. A hopper spray gun
is especially suited for the application
on ceilings and walls/facades.
Principle
The hopper spray gun is a normal spray
gun with an air nozzle and fitted with an
orifice plate. Changing the orifice size
is easily done by turning the orifice plate.
There are normally 4 different orifice
sizes to choose between, 3, 5, 7 and
10 mm. In order to obtain an optimum
finish for aggregate containing textured
coatings, the selected orifice should be
at least twice the size of the largest aggregate grains. By changing the distance
between the air nozzle and the orifice
plate, the volume of material that goes
through the spray gun can be controlled. On top of the gun a hopper or funnel is fitted. The hopper contains the
material to be sprayed. The material is
transported to the spray gun by the force
of gravity.
At the back of the spray gun an air hose

is fitted which is connected to a small
compressor. 220 litres of air per minute
and 2-3 bar air pressure is enough to
spray most materials. The air supply can
be adjusted on the gun.
Cleaning:
Clean the unit thoroughly after each use. When the hopper is emptied of material, run fresh water through the system. Dismantle the hopper if necessary
and clean it separately inside and outside. Thorough cleaning after each use
will ensure continued and reliable operation.
Safety:
Never aim the spray gun at yourself or others.
Never dismantle equipment unless you are sure that the air pressure has been
relieved.
How to use the hopper gun

Hold the gun with both hands, and employ round movements with both arms.
Ensure a continuous material flow by
keeping the trigger pulled. Overlap into
previously coated areas while they are
still wet, and if possible avoid application in direct sunshine to minimise the
risk of a patchy finish. Stop only for
longer periods at corners, cornices etc.
Different patterns can be obtained by
varying the nozzle size, the distance of
the nozzle from substrate, and by adjusting the air supply. Increasing the air
supply results in a smoother finish. Too
high air pressure may result in the aggregate separating from the binder (liquid part) of the material. Completely
smooth surfaces can be obtained by
using a broad knife just after application of coatings containing fine or no
aggregate at all.
Limitations
Make sure that the material to be
sprayed is well mixed with a uniform
consistency, thick enough to only just
allow a continuous flow into the spray
gun. If the material is too thin, this will
result in sagging and running and the
desired texture and wet film thickness
cannot be achieved.

and 2-3 bar air pressure is enough to
spray most materials. The air supply can
be adjusted on the gun.
Cleaning:
Clean the unit thoroughly after each use. When the hopper is emptied of material, run fresh water through the system. Dismantle the hopper if necessary
and clean it separately inside and outside. Thorough cleaning after each use
will ensure continued and reliable operation.
Safety:
Never aim the spray gun at yourself or others.
Never dismantle equipment unless you are sure that the air pressure has been
relieved.
How to use the hopper gun

Hold the gun with both hands, and employ round movements with both arms.
Ensure a continuous material flow by
keeping the trigger pulled. Overlap into
previously coated areas while they are
still wet, and if possible avoid application in direct sunshine to minimise the
risk of a patchy finish. Stop only for
longer periods at corners, cornices etc.
Different patterns can be obtained by
varying the nozzle size, the distance of
the nozzle from substrate, and by adjusting the air supply. Increasing the air
supply results in a smoother finish. Too
high air pressure may result in the aggregate separating from the binder (liquid part) of the material. Completely
smooth surfaces can be obtained by
using a broad knife just after application of coatings containing fine or no
aggregate at all.
Limitations
Make sure that the material to be
sprayed is well mixed with a uniform
consistency, thick enough to only just
allow a continuous flow into the spray
gun. If the material is too thin, this will
result in sagging and running and the
desired texture and wet film thickness
cannot be achieved.

Solution
All affected paint should be stripped off
and the cause of bleeding sealed off with
an appropriate sealer. After effective
sealing, re-paint according to the
appropriate specification.
Blistering
Takes place due to poor adhesion
between a paint and the surface. It may
be caused by sur face dampness or
excessive atmospheric moisture when
painting. Dampness in the surface may
be due to moisture retained in the
plaster or wood, or moisture migrating
from an adjacent structure.
Solution
All defective paint must be removed.
Surfaces must be cleaned, made sound,
then treated as new and painted
according to specification.
Brushmarking
Although mainly visible in glossy
finishes, br ushmarks are usually
present in the undercoat or primer and
may not be seen until the gloss finish is
applied, when it is too late for an easy
remedy.
Solution
Can be minimised by careful application
of undercoats and thinning slightly if
there has been solvent loss from the
paint before application, causing the
paint to thicken up. With water thinned
paints brushmarking can be caused by
overbrushing or inadequate thinning,
particularly on very absorbent surfaces.
Substrate should be sanded well back,
if in a rough condition, and sealed appropriately if porous.
Chalking
This is a powdery residue formed on a
paint finish when the surface begins to
erode from exposure to the weather.
Chalking is not usually considered a
defect unless it occurs prematurely. A
good gloss paint may soon begin to
chalk if used over a porous surface, e.g.
caused by the non-use of a primer or
sealer, or over-thining of previous coats
resulting in insufficient sealing of the
substrate. Chalking of surfaces can also
be evident where a saponifiable coating
has been used and has degraded, i.e.
by chemical attack.
Drying problems
Lack of drying is usually caused by one
of the following causes:
Contamination, such as wax or grease
on the sur face; Addition of unsuitable
material for thinning, such as paraffin,
oil, kerosene or slow drying thinners;
Painting in adverse conditions such as
during cold weather or when moisture
is condensing on the surface; Applying
paint over a previous coat which is not
dry.
96.82 Chalking
Solution
If the paint does not dry, it has to be
removed by solvent wash or with a paint
remover. Drying problems are greatly
reduced when paint is applied to clean
sur faces under reasonable weather
conditions with the appropriate thinner
used, where necessar y. If possible,
increase ventilation and the temperature
of the substrate. Sur faces should be
cleaned with detergent or solvent
washed.
96.82 Blistering
Efflorescence
It is recognisable as a white crystalline
deposit of water soluble salts which may
form on new plaster, cement render and
brick caused by dr ying out of the
structure. Efflorescence may also form
blisters in a paint film with no visible
salts. Also, efflorescence salt may be
attached to the back of the paint film,
causing no visible disruption, but
weakening adhesion and remaining a
threat to future decoration.
96.82 Brushmarking
Solution
Light chalking can be removed by
washing with water and detergent, and
the surface is then repainted normally.
Heavy surface chalking must be brushed
off and a sealer applied to bind the
surface before painting.
Solution
Remove by brushing down, do not wash
off. Repair any damage which may be
causing water ingress. Surfaces should
not be sealed or painted in alkyd or
solvent based systems until
efflorescence ceases. Whilst efflorescence is present, porous emulsion
paints are recommended.
Flaking
This results from the splitting and lifting
of a paint coat or paint system due to
loss of adhesion. This can be due to
one or more causes, such as;
1. Paint being applied on top of a
chalking substrate or other powdery
surface.
2. Using a primer which is unsuitable
for the surface, such as underbound,
over-thinned primer or one liable to
degrade on cement/alkaline
surfaces.
3. Painting on old, poor quality paint
which can become brittle and fail
rapidly once disruption occurs.
4. Moisture penetrating into wood
causing movement which cannot be
tolerated by the paint system.
Solution
Flaking paint and adjacent areas of
suspected badly adhering paint should
be removed completely. When repainting, care should be taken to provide a
dry surface free from powdery particles
and a sur face well sealed. Ensure
correct sealers/primers are used.

sealers is to make sure that the performance is acceptable to fulfil the requirements of the subsequently applied
paint system.
Areas of use
The sealers are used on porous surfaces such as concrete, plaster, gypsum
and masonry materials. They are used
on both interior and exterior surfaces.
What is a sealer?
A sealer is a dustbinding paint applied
to a cleaned mineral sur face, such as
concrete, plaster, gypsum, and masonry.
In general, it is done to secure a good,
water repellent basis for a decorative or
protective paint system.
Different sealers
There are several different types of Sealers. The type to use depends on the surface, the type of solvent in the subsequent paint system (water-/solventborne) and the resistance to humidity,
abrasion, chemicals, etc.:
Clear water-borne sealer
Mostly known as binder/sealer for
interior or exterior use. Transparent,
alkali resistant, economy binder/
sealer with good adhesion to gypsum
and plaster. Recoatable with wateror solvent-borne systems.
Pigmented or coloured waterborne sealer

Mostly known as primer/sealer for
interior or exterior use. Coloured, flat,
alkali resistant, primer/sealer, with
good adhesion to gypsum, plaster,
and masonry substrate in general.
Recoatable with water- or solventborne systems.
How is a sealer quality tested in

practice?
The most important tests to identify the
quality of a Sealer are the following:
Penetration
Good penetration results in a saturated
sur face showing no visible paint film
formed. However, bad penetration results in formation of a visible film formed
on the surface. The penetration properties can also be assessed by Consumption Calculations (see Hempel's code of
practise no. 96.21).
Clear solvent-borne sealer

exterior use. Extra good penetration
properties with good adhesion to
most masonry substrates. Transparent, glossy, alkali resistant, all-round
binder/sealer. Recoatable with water- or solvent-borne systems.
Dustbinding characteristics
Presence of dust or chalk on the surface is detected by drawing a black cloth
of cotton approximately 20 cm across
the surface. The presence of dust or
chalking is considered significant if the
cloth shows white or off-white colour and
if the dust keeps coming off after a couple of rubs at the same spot.
Pigmented or coloured solventborne sealer

glossy, alkali resistant, all-round
primer/sealer. Recoatable with water- or solvent-borne systems.
Adhesion
This method is used for evaluating the
inner cohesive strength and adhesion
to substrate. Plastic tape Tesa-film 122
is used for the test. The outermost 20
cm of a piece of tape of approximately
50 cm is firmly applied to the surface
with the finger nail. Then a sudden and
violent pull is made at the loose end
perpendicularly at right angles to the surface. Result: The tape test has not been
passed when some surface material/
sealer is adhering to the tape.
Non volatile or solids contents
These are stated on the Product Data
Sheet. High solids materials saturate
the substrate surface using less material compared to material with low solids content.

Area of use
The fillers are used on porous, uneven
surfaces such as concrete, plaster/ gypsum and masonry to repair imperfections in the substrate.
They are used on both interior and exterior sur faces normally on top of a
Primer/Sealer or binder/sealer which
forms a good basis for the filler.
What is a filler?
A Filler is a thick paint applied on top of
a suitable primer/sealer or binder/
sealer to a clean surface, such as concrete, plaster, gypsum, masonr y and
wood. This is done to secure a good,
smooth and even sur face which forms
the basis for a decorative or protective
paint system.
Different fillers
There are several different fillers available. Their uses depend on the type of
surface, the type of solvent in the subsequent paint system (water-/solventborne) and the resistance to e.g. water
migration, abrasion, chemicals etc.
Pigmented epoxy filler

Mostly known as epoxy filler for exterior
use. It is a very hard, impact and chemical resistant material when cured. It can
be applied in a dry film thickness of up
to 10 mm without cracking. Can be
recoated with solvent-borne primer/sealers and is the preferred filler for epoxy
and polyurethane systems.
All-round water-borne filler

Mostly known as putty filler for interior/
exterior use. Has excellent smoothing
and filling properties. Can be applied in
a dry film thickness of up to 1000 microns without cracking. Has a wet-edge
of approximately 20 minutes at 25C.
Recoatable with water-borne or solventborne systems.
High quality water-borne filler
Mostly known as putty filler for exterior
use. Has excellent smoothing and deep
filling properties. Can be applied in a
dry fim thickness of up to 1000 microns
without cracking. Has a wet-edge of approximately 20 minutes at 25C. Suitable for exterior exposure for a limited
period of time. Can be recoated with
water-borne or solvent-borne systems.
Pigmented epoxy grout

Mostly known as solvent-free epoxy
grout. It is a ver y hard, impact and
chemical resistant material when cured.
This 3-component material can be applied in a dry film thickness of up to 30
mm without cracking. Can be recoated
with solvent-borne primers/sealers and
is the preferred grout for epoxy and polyurethane systems.
How is a filler quality tested in practice?

Solvent-borne filler
Mostly known as putty, knifing- or blockfiller. This filler is thixotropic and is
smooth and easy to apply. It can be applied in a dry film thickness of up to 1
mm without cracking. Accepts a wide
range of solvent- and water-borne topcoats.
Application properties - are checked

by applying the filler with the application tools indicated on the product data sheet of the product. The
time for good workability is measured
indicating the wet-edge time. The
workability must be easy and show
good smoothing as well as filling
properties.
Economic water-borne filler

Mostly known as putty filler for interior
use. Has excellent smoothing and filling properties. Can be applied in a dry
film thickness of up to 500 micron without cracking. Has a wet-edge of approximately 10 minutes at 25C. Recoatable
with water-borne systems.
Cracking - is measured by applying

the filler on a non-absorbent
substrate, e.g. a piece of plastic, in
excessive film thicknesses. When
the film starts cracking, the dry film
layer is measured by e.g. a slide ruler
with 1 mm indication.
Sanding properties - the applied and

dry filler must have easy sanding
properties. This means that excessive force should not be required in
order to achieve a smooth surface
using appropriate sanding paper.
Also there should be no or only little
material left on the sanding paper.
Scrub resistance - is tested by finger rubbing with and without water
on the dried film.
An economic filler will typically deposit filler material on the finger. In
cases where there is only very little
binder material in the filler, the dried
film can be partly removed by rubbing the filler sur face with the hand
without any wetting of the surface.
Penetration of water - is measured
by splashing water on to the dry filler

Area of use
The fillers are used on porous, uneven
surfaces such as concrete, plaster/ gypsum and masonry to repair imperfections in the substrate.
They are used on both interior and exterior sur faces normally on top of a
Primer/Sealer or binder/sealer which
forms a good basis for the filler.
What is a filler?
A Filler is a thick paint applied on top of
a suitable primer/sealer or binder/
sealer to a clean surface, such as concrete, plaster, gypsum, masonr y and
wood. This is done to secure a good,
smooth and even sur face which forms
the basis for a decorative or protective
paint system.
Different fillers
There are several different fillers available. Their uses depend on the type of
surface, the type of solvent in the subsequent paint system (water-/solventborne) and the resistance to e.g. water
migration, abrasion, chemicals etc.
Pigmented epoxy filler

Mostly known as epoxy filler for exterior
use. It is a very hard, impact and chemical resistant material when cured. It can
be applied in a dry film thickness of up
to 10 mm without cracking. Can be
recoated with solvent-borne primer/sealers and is the preferred filler for epoxy
and polyurethane systems.
All-round water-borne filler

Mostly known as putty filler for interior/
exterior use. Has excellent smoothing
and filling properties. Can be applied in
a dry film thickness of up to 1000 microns without cracking. Has a wet-edge
of approximately 20 minutes at 25C.
Recoatable with water-borne or solventborne systems.
High quality water-borne filler

Application properties - are checked

by applying the filler with the application tools indicated on the product data sheet of the product. The
time for good workability is measured
indicating the wet-edge time. The
workability must be easy and show
good smoothing as well as filling
properties.
Economic water-borne filler

Mostly known as putty filler for interior
use. Has excellent smoothing and filling properties. Can be applied in a dry
film thickness of up to 500 micron without cracking. Has a wet-edge of approximately 10 minutes at 25C. Recoatable
with water-borne systems.
Cracking - is measured by applying

the filler on a non-absorbent
substrate, e.g. a piece of plastic, in
excessive film thicknesses. When
the film starts cracking, the dry film
layer is measured by e.g. a slide ruler
with 1 mm indication.
Sanding properties - the applied and

dry filler must have easy sanding
properties. This means that excessive force should not be required in
order to achieve a smooth surface
using appropriate sanding paper.
Also there should be no or only little
material left on the sanding paper.
Scrub resistance - is tested by finger rubbing with and without water
on the dried film.
An economic filler will typically deposit filler material on the finger. In
cases where there is only very little
binder material in the filler, the dried
film can be partly removed by rubbing the filler sur face with the hand
without any wetting of the surface.
Penetration of water - is measured
by splashing water on to the dry filler
surface. If the water is totally absorbed, the film is very porous. This
will indicate that it is an economic
type suited for interior use only.

There are 3 simple tests to make a
quality test of an emulsion in practice
emulsions is to make sure that the hiding power and colour stability are acceptable to fulfil the requirements.
Areas of use
In order to get a good quality paint job
the first step is to identify the areas to
be painted and their different in requirements. Below are a few examples of the
most common areas.
Ceilings: The only requirements are
colour stability and resistance to
smoke from cigarettes/cigars/cooking and humidity
Interior walls in living rooms: require
colour stability, wear-resistance and
good washability. On previously
painted surfaces a good hiding power
is needed.
Interior walls in kitchens: scrub resistance for cleaning, resistance
against cooking oils and detergents,
ease of cleaning, etc.
Exterior walls: weather resistance,
i.e. scrub resistance against e.g.
sandstorms and rain showers, resistance against sunlight, etc.
How is an emulsion tested in practice
Presented below are 3 simple tests you
can do yourself. These will give you a
good idea of the per formance of the
emulsion on the 3 key areas: Wear, hiding and weather.
Scrub test
Apply the emulsion on coated carton.
Let it dry thoroughly. Rub it with a wet
nail brush. If the emulsion disappears:
1. very quickly with less than 20 scrubs,

then the paint is only suited for areas with no wear e.g. ceilings.
2. after approx. 6-800 scrubs then it is
suited for interior use with some wear
i.e. living rooms and for exterior use
with low to medium weather exposure.
3. after min. 2000 scrubs then the paint
is well suited for exterior walls fully
exposed to the weather.

Test of hiding
Apply the emulsion to a thick piece of
clear plastic; let it dry thoroughly and
hold it against the light:
1. If you can see through the film then
the hiding power is poor and you will
need several coats and thus more
paint to hide old paint and/or obtain
an even colour.
2. If you cannot see through then the
paint will hide in 1-2 coats, thus saving not only on the quantity of paint
used but also on the labour cost involved.
3. Bend the plastic and observe to what
extent the paint will fall off or stay
on. This will illustrate the flexibility
of the paint. This is not important
for normal application on plaster or
concrete but might be important on
e.g. wood.

Apply the emulsion on 2 wooden boards.
Expose one to the sun for 21 days (500
hours), and keep the other one inside.
Compare the 2 boards:

1. If they look alike then the paint has

paint is degrading in the sun and will
soon lose its protective properties
also regarding the scrub resistance.

Textures is to make sure that the performance is acceptable to fulfil the requirements of service life and appearance.
What is a texture?
A Texture is a paint with or without aggregate of different grades.The aggregate is added to achieve a textured finish. Some textures are just thick paints.
When applied with e.g. a textured roller,
the finish becomes textured. Normally
the Texture is applied in rather thick
coats of paint (30-5000 micron).
Area of use
The purpose of applying textures is to
create a textured sur face for mainly
decorative purposes. The texture must
also be water resistant like any other
paint and have sufficient flexibiIity.
What makes a quality texture?
quality of a texture are the following:
Sagging
Since textured paints are often applied
in heavy coats, poor textures have a tendency to sag. It is therefore important
that it can hold itself together, meaning
that it does not slide down vertical surfaces resulting in a uneven and unattractive finish. However, sagging can
also be caused by excessive thinning !
The test is performed by applying the

Texture to a wooden panel in a high film
thickness and placing the panel vertically. If the sagging starts after a few
minutes, and hereby changing the surface pattern, the quality is not good
enough.
Patterns
A good texture will be able to provide a
variety of patterns depending on the
methods of application: Roller, spray,
spray and levelling, etc.

What is a texture?
Lower quality textures will only provide

soft rounded patterns. It is therefore a
good idea to make a test application to
evaluate the final apperance.
Flexibility
A poor textured paint may crack during
drying.
To test the texture for cracking apply the
texture on a thick piece of plastic. After
full drying bend the plastic. The good
texture will follow the movements of the
plastic without cracking and without falling off.
Water resistance
The texture must be water resistant like
any other paint.This can be checked by
applying the texture on an asbestos
panel at a high film thickness and in the
desired pattern. After dr ying overnight
immerse the panel in water. The low
quality product will star t to dissolve
within 24 hours while the high quality
product will remain intact.

of binder. They can be formulated to give
different properties with regard to drying time, tendency to yellow, gloss level,
hiding power and colour.
Alkyd enamels
The following will only describe quality
tests of alkyd enamels, but most of the
tests will also be relevant for other
enamels:
Alkyds are normally solvent-borne, but
water-borne alkyds can also be formulated. Alkyds will dry and cure first by
evaporation of the solvents and secondly
by a chemical reaction between the coating and oxygen from the air.
Please note that the drying time is also

dependent on temperature of the substrate and ventilation. At 20C and sufficient ventilation, an enamel should be
dry to touch within max. 7-8 hours.
Paint film appearance
Enamels are normally smooth finishes.
If the paint has not been manufactured
properly it may contain large particles
of undispersed pigments or other contaminants which will detract from the
decorative appearance.
Test of hiding power

Apply the enamel by brush to a glass
panel or a thick piece of transparent
plasticboard. Let it dry thoroughly and
hold it against the light.
If you can see through the paint film
then the hiding power must be considered poor and you will need to
apply two coats or more. Therefore
more paint is required to hide the
substrate and/or obtain an even colour.
Test of paint film appearance

Apply the paint in a low and even film
thickness on a smooth substrate. Allow
the paint to dry and evaluate the appearance.
Please be aware that there is a distinct
difference between dust coming from
the air/room and contaminants from the
paint. The paint should form a nice and
smooth film without coarse particles in
the film.

If you are not able to see through

the pint film, then the paint will hide
in one or two coats and thereby you
will save not only on the quantity of
paint used but also on the labour
cost and time involved.
Colour and gloss

Enamels can be formulated to different
gloss levels and in different colours.
It is important that you get the product
with the colour and gloss level you desire. The colour and the gloss level of
the product are stated in the product
data sheet.
Drying time
As stated before, enamels will dry not
only by evaporation of solvent, but also
by a chemical reaction between the paint
and oxygen from the air.
Properties of alkyd enamels

In the following we will go through the
different properties of alkyd enamels.
This should help you choosing the product that fit your requirements.
The paint should stay open long enough

for the paint to flow together to form a
uniform film. It should also dr y fast
enough to avoid dirt pick up.
Hiding power (opacity)

Hiding power is the ability of the paint
to cover or hide the substrate. It is a
proper ty that is especially important
when you want to change the colour of
a substrate.
Test of drying
Apply the paint to a panel of wood, steel,
glass etc. Allow the solvents to evaporate. Touch the paint with a finger at
intervals of half an hour. When the paint
no longer feels tacky, it is dry to touch.
Some alkyd enamels are sold as white,

but when applied they appear yellow! - It
is also important that the paint, after it
has been applied, retains its colour and
gloss for a reasonable length of time.
If the enamel has been formulated with
cheap, low-quality pigments it may loose
its colour and gloss when exposed to
sun light.
Tendency to yellow
All alkyd enamels will yellow when exposed in certain environments. The yellowing is only a cosmetic problem and
will not detract from the protective value
of the coating.

However, if good quality raw materials

have been used to formulate the paint,
it is possible to reduce the tendency to
yellow. There is no direct relationship
between tendency to yellow and price except for real non-yellowing enamels,
which will be significantly more expensive as compared to the traditional ones.
Enamels will yellow when exposed to the
following conditions:
Inside dark rooms where the surfaces are not exposed to sunlight.
When exposed to elevated temperatures for extended periods.
When exposed to tobacco smoke and
other pollutants.
Test on yellowing tendency (and colour and gloss stability)
Apply the enamel on 3 panels (wooden
boards, glass or steel panels). Allow the
paint to dry and cure for 2 days.
Expose one outside in direct sunlight.
Keep the other panel inside in a normally
lit room. Place the third panel in a
drawer. After 21 days (500 hours) compare the 3 panels.
If the panel which has been exposed
outside has lost gloss and has faded,
it has probably been formulated with
low quality raw materials. This must
be taken into consideration if the
product is for exterior use.
If the panel which has been left in
the drawer for 21 days has yellowed
considerably the coating will also
yellow when you use it indoors.
From the foregoing you may get the impression that enamels are very tricky
and that it is extremely dif ficult to
choose the right product. This is not the
case.

has been to inform you of the fact, that
there is as direct relationship between
quality and price. And we have tried to
suggest a few simple tests which you

Surface condition:
The surface should be stable, firm, dry and free of contaminants like dust, old paint, dirt,
oil, grease and algae. The moisture content of the wood should not exceed 16%.
Remarks:
Do not apply under humid conditions or at temperatures below 5C.

Drying data is given on the assumption that proper ventilation and relative humidity
below 65 % is provided.
It is advisable to saturate the dry surface with HEMPEL'S WOOD PRESERVATIVE 02350
which contains an active fungicide preventing the premature rotting of wood.

Surface condition:
The surface should be stable, firm, dry and free of dust, sand, loose old paint,
sealer/primer, laitance, dirt, grease and oil. It is recommended to apply a primer/sealer
prior to the specified filling procedure. Touch-up with primer/sealer on areas repaired
with filler is recommended prior to application of topcoats.
Filling:
Mix 2-3 parts of sand to 1 part of HEMPEL'S ROOF COATING 58810 to fill small cracks
in the concrete. For large holes and cracks, HEMPEL'S EPOXY GROUT 35930 is
recommended.
