The key takeaways are the different types of industrial hazards like mechanical, chemical, electrical, fire/explosion and dust hazards and some of the safety measures to prevent injuries from these hazards.

The different types of industrial hazards discussed are mechanical, chemical, electrical, fire/explosion and dust hazards.

Some of the safety measures mentioned for electrical hazards are to never pull or jerk the cord to unplug equipment, correct any cracked or exposed wiring, and tag equipment causing shocks or with leakage potential with a DANGER or DO NOT USE label.

INDUSTRIAL HAZARDS
Definition
Any real or potential conditions produced by industries that can cause injury or death to
personnel or loss of product or property.
TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL HAZARDS
1. Mechanical hazards
2. Chemical Hazards
3. Electrical Hazards
4. Fire & Explosion Hazards
5. Dust Hazards
1. Mechanical Hazards
Occurs near any moving parts of a machine
Source of Mechanical Hazards
i.

The point of operation - cutting, shaping, boring, punching

ii.

Power transmission apparatus- pulleys, belts, chains

iii.

Other moving parts- rotating, reciprocating, transverse

Requirements for Safeguards

i.

Prevent Contact

ii.

Secure

iii.

Protect from falling objects

iv.

Allow safe lubrication

2. Chemical Hazards
Source of Chemical Hazards
I.
II.

Vapors or Gases produced from solvents used in extraction of plants, purification of

synthetic drugs & in chemical analysis
Liquid chemicals if spilled on workers

Chapter Industrial Hazards

Industrial Pharmacy
i.

Chemical hazard pocket guide should be consulted

ii.

No drinking, eating or smoking where chemicals are kept or used

iii.

Skin should be covered with protective clothing

iv.

Face mask may used

v.

Workers must be changed routinely

vi.

Proper ventilation

vii.

Workers should immediately be removed if any problem arises

3. Electrical Hazards
Caused as a result of contact with electric energy
Electrical injuries consist of four types:
Electrocution (Fatal), shock, burns & fall
EFFECT OF ELECTRIC CURRENT IN HUMAN
CURRENT
EFFECT
(milliampere)
Above 10 mA Paralyze or freeze muscle
(muscle become stiff)
Above 30 mA Respiratory Paralysis
Above 75 mA Ventricular Fibrillation
(very rapid, ineffective heartbeat)
Above 5 A

Burning of tissues occurs

Safety Measures
i.

Never pull or jerk the cord to unplug the equipment

ii.

Cracked or exposed wiring must be corrected

iii.

Electrical equipment causing shocks or which has leakage potential must be tagged with
a DANGER or DO NOT USE label.

4. Fire Hazards & Explosion Hazards

Types of fire:

Class A Fires ordinary combustible materials

Class B Fires flammable petroleum products

Class C Fires energized electrical equipment

Class D Fires combustible metals

Fire Extinguishers:
Fire extinguishing agents work by:

Removal of fuel by blanketing with foam

By removal of oxygen by diluting with inert gases or vapour

By removal of heat by cooling

5. Dust Hazards
Sources of dust hazards
i.

Grinding or milling

ii.

Weighing

iii.

Powder mixing

iv.

Coating operation

v.

Capsule filing and tablet punching operation

Methods of controlling dust

I.
II.
III.

Filtration: Filter medium like paper, felt, wool, cotton and nylon
Inertial Separator: e.g. Cyclone Separator
Electrostatic Precipitators: consists of metal tubes though which a conductor wire is
passed. Several thousand volts of DC current is applied on the metal wire. When dust air
is passed through the pipes the dust particles becomes charged & precipitates.

Responsibilities of individual employee

Training & education

ii.

Hazardous Condition Reporting

iii.

Work Practices

iv.
