    Evam me sutam
    Thus have I heard:
    ekam samayam Bhagav
    On one occasion the Blessed One
    Svatthiyam viharati Jetavane, Antha-pindikassa rme
    was dwelling at Anathapindika's monastery, in the Jeta Grove near Savatthi.
    Atha kho atar devat
    Now when the night was far advanced, a certain deity
    abhikkantya rattiy abhikkantavann
    whose surpassing splendour
    kevala-kappam Jetavanam obhsetv
    illuminated the entire Jeta Grove,
    yena Bhagav ten'upasamkami, upasankamitv
    came to the presence of the Blessed One and,
    Bhagavantam abhivdetv, ekamantam atthsi
    drawing near respectfully saluted him, and stood to one side.
    Ekamantam thit kho, s devat Bhagavantam
    gthya ajjhabhsi
    Standing thus, he addressed the Blessed One in verse:
    1.

    Par-bhavantam purisam - Mayam pucchma Gotamam


    "Having come here with our questions to the Exalted One,
    we ask thee, O Gotama, about man's downfall.
    Bhagavantam putthu-mgamma - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us what is the cause of man's downfall."

    2.

    Suvijno bhavam hoti - Suvijno parbhavo


    "Easily known is the progressive one, easily known is the declining one.
    Dhammakmo bhavam hoti - Dhammadess parbhavo
    He who loves Dhamma progresses. He who is averse to it, declines."

    3.

    Iti h'etam vijnma - Pathamo so parbhavo


    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the first cause of man's
    downfall.
    Dutiyam Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the second, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's
    downfall?"

    4.

    Asant'assa piy honti - Sante na kurute piyam


    "The wicked are dear to him, with the virtuous he finds no delight.
    Asatam dhammam roceti - Tam parbhavato mukham
    He approves the teachings of the wicked. This is the cause of man's
    downfall."

    5.

    Iti h'etam vijnma - Dutiyo so parbhavo


    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the second cause of man's
    downfall.
    Tatiyam Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the third, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's downfall?"

    6.

    Niddsli Sabhsli - Anuttht ca yo naro


    "Fond of sleep and company, inactive and lazy,
    Alaso kodha-pano - Tam parbhavato mukham
    and manifesting anger. This is the cause of man's downfall."

    7.

    Iti h'etam vijnma - Tatiyo so parbhavo


    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the third cause of man's
    downfall.
    Catuttham Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the fourth, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's downfall?"

    Yo mtaram v pitaram v - Jinnakam gata yobbanam


    "Being affluent, one does not support one's mother and father
    Pahsanto na bharati - Tam parbhavato mukham
    who are old, past their youth and prime. This is the cause of man's downfall."

    9.

    Iti h'etam vijnma - Catuttho so parbhavo


    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the fourth cause of man's
    downfall.
    Pacamam Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the fifth, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's downfall?"

    10. Yo brhmanam v samanam v - Aam v pi vanibbakam


    "To deceive by falsehood a brahmana, or ascetic,
    Musvdena vaceti - Tam parbhavato mukham
    or any other mendicant. This is the cause of man's downfall."
    11. Iti h'etam vijnma - Pacamo so parbhavo
    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the fifth cause of man's
    downfall.
    Chatthamam Bhagav brhi - Tam parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the sixth, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's downfall?"
    12. Pahtavitto puriso - Sahirao sabhojano
    "To possess much wealth and abundance of gold and food,
    Eko bhujati sdhni - Tam parbhavato mukham
    but to enjoy one's delicacies all by oneself. This is the cause of man's
    downfall."
    13. Iti h'etam vijnma - Chattamo so parbhavo
    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the sixth cause of man's
    downfall.
    Sattamam Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the seventh, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's
    downfall?"
    14. Jtitthaddho dhanatthaddho - Gottatthaddho ca yo naro
    "To be proud of one's birth, wealth and clan,
    Saatim atimaeti - Tam parbhavato mukham
    and to despise one's own kinsmen. This is the cause of man's downfall."
    15. Iti h'etam vijnma - Sattamo so parbhavo
    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the seventh cause of man's
    downfall.
    Atthamam Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the eighth, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's
    downfall?"
    16. Itthidhutto surdhuto - Akkhadhutto ca yo naro
    "To be addicted to women (given to a life of indulgence in immoral
    pleasures),
    Laddham laddham vinseti - Tam parbhavato mukham
    a drunkard, a gambler, and a squanderer of his earnings. This is the cause of
    man's downfall."
    17. Iti h'etam vijnma - Atthamo so parbhavo
    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the eighth cause of man's
    downfall.
    Navamam Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the ninth, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's downfall?"
    18. Sehi drehi'santuttho - Vesiysu padissati
    "Not to be contented with one's own wives, and to be seen with whores
    Dissati paradresu - Tam parbhavato mukham
    and the wives of others. This is the cause of man's downfall."
    19. Iti h'etam vijnma - Navamo so parbhavo
    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the ninth cause of man's
    downfall.
    Dasamam Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the tenth, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's downfall?"
    20. Attayobbano poso - Aneti timbaruthanim
    "Being past one's youth, to take a young wife

    and to be unable to sleep for jealousy of her. This is the cause of man's
    downfall."
    21. Iti h'etam vijnma - Dasamo so parbhavo
    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the tenth cause of man's
    downfall.
    Ekdasamam Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the eleventh, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's
    downfall?"
    22. Itthi sondim vikiranim - Purisam v'pi tdisam
    "To place in authority a woman given to drink and squandering,
    Issariyasmin thappeti - Tam parbhavato mukham
    or a man of similar behaviour. This is the cause of man's downfall."
    23. Iti h'etam vijnma - Ekdasamo so parbhavo
    "We understand this as explained by thee. This is the eleventh cause of
    man's downfall.
    Dvdasamam Bhagav brhi - Kim parbhavato mukham
    Pray, tell us the twelfth, O Blessed One. What is the cause of man's
    downfall?"
    24. Appabhogo mahtanho - Khattiye jyate kule
    "To be of noble birth, with vast ambition and of slender means,
    So ca rajjim patthayati - Tam parbhavato mukham
    and to crave for rulership. This is the cause of man's downfall."
    25. Ete parbhave loke - Pandito samavekkhiya
    "Fully realising these twelve causes of man's downfall in the world,
    Ariyo dassana-sampanno - Sa lokam bhajate sivan'ti
    the Noble sage, endowed with ariyan insight, shares a realm of security
    (Nibbana)."
