ZigBee Networks

Overview

Digital Lumens lighting components form and communicate with each other via a ZigBee / 802.15.4 wireless mesh
network. ZigBee/802.15.4 is a low-power, wireless network standard that does not interfere with 802.11b/g networks.
This document answers frequently asked ZigBee network-related questions, as they pertain the lighting components
from Digital Lumens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: On what channel or channels within the 2.4 GHz band do the LED lights communicate?
A: Digital Lumens lights are programmed to communicate on one of 128 channels. Each light operates within a mesh
network of up to 50 lights communicating on the same channel. Please see Appendix A for frequency bands.
Q: What is a wireless mesh network?
A: A wireless mesh network (WMN) is a communications network made up of radio nodes organized in a mesh
topology. In a mesh topology, each node not only captures and disseminates its own data, but also serves as a
router for other nodes (see Figure 1).

a mesh topology

Q: On what channel or channels within the 2.4 GHz band do the LightRules gateways communicate?
A: There is one gateway assigned to each channel in use. One gateway manages up to 50 lights in a single mesh network.
Q: What is the power output of the lights and gateways, in milliwatts?
A: Power output for both lights and gateways is 0dBm, or 1mW.
Q: What information is available confirming that a ZigBee network will not interfere with a WiFi
802.11b/g network already in place at a facility?
A: Refer to the Co-existence of IEEE 802.15.4 at 2.4 GHz Application Note PDF ( 2008 Jennic, Limited) available in
conjunction with this document. In summary, note the following:
Digital Lumens components output 1/100th to 1/200th of the power output by WiFi, on a far smaller frequency
band, for a much shorter period of time.
Q: Can you change assigned channels using software, or are channels hard-coded at the factory?
A: Yes, you can change the channel via software-based wireless configuration. This process takes minutes and can be
performed in the field.
