(teknon). n. neut. child. A child, especially in relation to parents.
This noun is related to the verb (tikt, to give birth) and originally referred to
that which is borni.e., offspring or a child. It can refer simply to offspring in general,
and it is often used interchangeably with (huios, son); for example, in Luke 15 the
older brother of the prodigal son is first referred to as huios (Luke 15:25), but then as
teknon (Luke 15:31). However, teknon is a somewhat more general term for child than
huios, and does not indicate the childs gender. Like huios, it can be used to describe a
believer as a child (teknon) of God (John 1:12; 1 John 3:1; Rom 8:16). The word
teknon can be used figuratively to refer to someone who is not a physical descendant,
but who occupies the role of obedient son, such as Pauls coworkers Timothy (1 Cor
4:17; Phil 2:22), Titus (Titus 1:4), and Philemon (Phlm 1:10). The term usually has positive connotations in the nt, often as a term of endearment and intimate affection (Gal
4:19; Col 3:20), though it can refer negatively to the naivety of the immature (2 Cor
6:13). The diminutive of teknon, (teknion, little child) appears only in the writings of John and always as a term of address, either from Jesus to his disciples (John
13:33) or from John to the audience of his first letter (e.g., 1 John 2:1).
Old Testament
(bn); Aram. ( bar). n. masc. son. Generally refers to a son, or immediate male
offspring, but can also describe children of unspecified gender, grandchildren, or descendants.
By far the most common word in the ot to describe offspring, Hebrew bn is used
mainly to convey the familial relationship of sonship. It can refer to the immediate offspring of a couple (e.g., Gen 4:25), and can be used in the plural to simply refer to the
concept of children (Gen 3:16). It can also be used to describe kinship beyond just immediate offspringgrandchildren or descendants (e.g., Gen 31:28, where Laban uses it
to refer to his grandsons). In contrast to ( yld, child), the term bn does not necessitate biological relationship, and can thus be used to refer to an individual that has
been adopted in order to fill the role as heir (see Gen 15:2). The word bn can also be
used in a number of other various waysfor instance, to refer to a group (e.g., sons
[bn] of Israel, Num 27:12; sons [bn] of the prophets, 2 Kgs 5:22; sons [bn] of
God, Pss 29:1, 89:6) or to refer to an individuals age (Noah was a son [bn] of five
hundred years, Gen 5:32).
The Aramaic equivalent bar has a similar range of senses, including referring to a
son in the familial sense (eg., Ezra 5:1) and to a group of people (e.g., Dan 2:25, the
sons [bar] of the exile, i.e., the exiles).
