INTRODUCTION

The club represents freedom of

expression where as the classroom represents conformity
and repressionM. C. Kown . For supplementing the
teaching of mathematics in the classroom and to widen the
knowledge of his students a good mathematics teacher can
involve his students in a number of co-curricular activities
such as organization and use of mathematics library,
mathematics laboratory, mathematics club etc.
The meeting place where a number of
persons meet to discuss something or to study some
problems is known as club and where students of
mathematics sit and discuss together is called mathematics
club. Mathematics club plays an important role in motivating
the students to learn mathematics with interest and
involvement. Sometimes mathematics teaching in classroom
become so monotonous that the students become restless

and get easily distracted. Club provides a lot of freedom of

expression for the students and it supplements classroom
learning.

CONTENT
Mathematics club plays an important role in
motivating the students to learn mathematics with interest
and involvement. Mathematics
club provides excellent
opportunities for students to break away from the monotony
of a rigid and structured classroom environment .Though the
learning that takes place in a mathematics club is informal
in nature, it is meaningful as the stress in on practical
applications. In the mathematics club the students chooses
the activities on his own and purses them in a free and
relaxed manner contrary to the atmosphere prevailing in the
classroom. Club provides a lot of freedom of expression for
the students and it supplements classroom learning. The
mathematics club will create among the students an idea of
the practical utility of mathematics in addition to creating
their interest in mathematics. Also a number of interesting
programmes can be organised under the auspices of a
mathematics club.

IMPORTANCE OF
MATHEMATICS CLUB
The mathematics club can serve a number of
purposes. These purposes and values show the need and
importance of this club. The values of mathematics club
may be summerised as follows:
It inculcates the habit of self study and independent
work among the students.

It supplements classroom teaching.

It acquaints the students with the contribution of great
mathematicians in their fields.
It stimulates individual interest and initiative in the
study of the subject matter.
It helps the child in the proper utilization of leisure time
with purposeful activity.

It provides a less formal environment of study as

compared to usual classroom teaching.
It provides opportunities to the child for freedom of
thought and free exchange of different views.
It enhances co-operation between the teacher and the
taught.

It offers an ideal avenue for a free exchange of

mathematical ideas and for frank and helpful criticism
of these ideas.
It develops in the students the habit of selective study
which helps them to make a distinction between
relevant and irrelevant material.
It provides the students with opportunities to develop
their explorative, creative and inventive faculties.
It helps in developing heuristic and problem solving
attitude among the students.
It provides opportunities for students to translate the
theory into practice and to apply their learning in daily
life situations.
It helps the students to imbibe social qualities like
cooperation,
tolerance,
adjustment
and
openmindedness as they work in groups.
It helps to meet individual needs of the students as
every member gets an opportunity to work in his area
of interest.
It offers a good platform for students to listen to
renowned mathematicians, eminent mathematics
teachers and educationists and to acquaint themselves
with the latest development in maths.
It provides first hand experiences to the learners as
they participate in model making, arranging for
exhibition, field work, laboratory work and so on.

FUNCTIONS OF MATHEMATICS
CLUB
The list of functions in a way suggest activities
for the club. The following are some important activities
which may be organised by a mathematics club.

Organising recreational activities in mathematics such

as games, quiz, puzzles, riddles etc.
Preparing mathematical aids and illustrations.
Collecting and reading mathematical literature and
magazines.
Conducting projects, experiments, discussions and
debates on important topics related to mathematics.
Organising mathematics competitions, seminars and
career talks related to mathematics.
Organising programmes that necessitates extra reading
and study of mathematics.
Celebrating days and events pertaining to eminent
mathematicians and history of mathematics.
Organising lectures of prominent teachers from outside
and experts of allied subjects and professions.

Arranging mathematical shows, exhibitions etc.

Conducting certain outings of mathematical interest
such as visit to banks, post offices, business corners
etc.
Organising inter-class and inter-school competitions in
collaboration with other subject clubs.
Making arrangements for listening to relevant radio and
T.V programmes.

Holding discussion over the existing curriculum of

mathematics and to suggest measures to bring
improvements.
Organising discussions about the practical applications
of mathematics.
Making charts, models, pictures, graphs etc for the
mathematics laboratory.
Organising paper reading contests about certain
important topics of mathematics.
Organising seminars and career courses relating to
mathematics.
Arranging guidance programme for the needy and weak
students.
Thus a mathematics club gets
the students acquainted with wide range of topics
relating to mathematics. The success of a mathematics
club depends upon the enthusiasm shown by the
teacher as well as the involvement of the students in
the activities and programmes organised by the club.

ORGANISATION OF MATHEMATICS
CLUB

A properly organised
mathematics club will be a valuable aid for teaching
mathematics and also a means of motivating the children
for learning mathematics. For proper running of a club the
most important thing is the preparation of a draft
constitution of the club. This draft be prepared by the
mathematics teacher in consultation with the head of the
institution. This draft constitution should provide all
important details about the club like the lake of the club,
aims and objectives of the club, details regarding
membership and the fees to be paid by members etc. For

11

efficient and successful working of mathematics club, an

expert body has suggested to organization as under:
Patron : The mathematics club should have the head of the
institution as its patron.
Sponsor : One of the senior mathematics teachers can be
the sponsor of the mathematics club.
Members : All the mathematics students of the school can
be members of the club.
Executive committee : An executive committee should be
formed including the following members elected or
nominated among the students. It includes,
Chairman
Secretary
Assistant secretary
Treasurer
One or two class representatives from each class.
For the efficient and successful working of a
mathematics club, it is advisable to demarcate the duties of
each office bearer.

CONCLUSION
A properly organised
mathematics club goes a long way in stimulating interest
among the students in mathematics. It is desirable that the
initiative for the organization of such a club should come
from the students. It should be run by the students under
the supervision and guidance of the mathematics teacher.

12

The objectives of the club should be clearly stated and

understood by all the members. The mathematics club will
create among the students an idea of the practical utility of
mathematics in addition to creating their interest in
mathematics. Also a number of interesting programmes can
be organised under the auspices of a mathematics club.
