Call to Action Outline
Purpose: I want my audience to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters and talk to the girls (and boys)
in their lives. I want the audience to influence kids and their ideas before the media does, or before their
circumstances define who they are.
Thesis: You should support Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in order to influence the next generation
before the media does.

Intro (30 sec.)

A. Reflecting on the media and the ads we are faced with on a daily basis, its discouraging
to begin to see all of the things that beauty is not.
B. What is an encouragement, however, is the true beauty we also see all around every
day. (switch slide)
C. These are the faces of the empowered women that I want to be the role models of girls
everywhere; not images of Kim Kardashian or other airbrushed models.
1. Its important that we teach girls and boys what being authentic means.
2. Its important that we show them how to be strong and hardworking and be
successful while still being real.
D. Thesis: You should support Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in order to influence the
next generation before the media does.
Need (1-2 min.)
A. We spend 2-3 years of our lives watching television ads.
1. All we are fed from this information, however, is that women are only seen as
objects.
2. All we see are standards of extreme perfection that are impossible to obtain and
live up to.
B. These pictures of perfection affect people right around you. They shape your sisters,
your cousins, your moms, your aunts, your best friends.
1. These negative images lead to eating disorders and other mental issues such as
depression.
2. If we allow the media to tell girls and boys what is acceptable, the cultures
negative influences will begin to shape their identity the media will become
their role model.
Satisfaction (3 min.)
A. The Big Brothers Big Sisters Program began in 1902.
B. It seeks to change the lives of children facing adversity between 6 and 18 years of age.

C. The organization pairs children with older brothers or sisters who act as mentors to
form lasting, impactful relationships with these kids.
1. While these kids may not specifically be dealing with the impact of the media,
they are dealing with tough situations that create lies in their minds about who
to trust and who to look up to.
2. This non-for-profit organization works to empower these individuals whose lives
would otherwise be afflicted.
i. These kids may live in single parent homes, growing up in poverty and
coping with parental incarceration.
ii. By empowering these young kids, mentors are able to positively affect
these kids self-images and boost their self-worth to create young adults
who are capable of leadership, and who are proud of themselves and
their accomplishments.
D. Mentors bring their little brothers and sisters into their lives.
1. They spend time with them, and get to know their stories.
2. They encourage them and teach them core values to anchor these kids when
they would otherwise be floating in their circumstances.
Visualization / Conclusion (1-2 min.)
A. By empowering kids with values and encouragement from mentors, it will reduce the
need they have to look to what the rest of society is doing as their example for success
and self-worth.
B. There are countless testimonies on the website of ways in which Big and Little siblings
were impacted through these mentoring relationships.
1. One example was a story of Sarah and Victoria. Sarah felt so much hope, and
felt so special because she had the love of Victoria her Big Sister.
2. Because of this organization, Sarah is now starting her own family, and she still
has her Big Sister Vic to look up to, and to look to for support and
encouragement.
3. Sarah didnt fall into the traps that her friends did because she had someone
there to tell her it wasnt worth it to follow the crowd -- to waste her life
partying.
C. Another Testimony was that of Andrew and Jon
1. Andrews dad died when he was only 9.
2. With Johns help, Andrew even became one of the few Boy Scouts in the
country to complete every activity in his handbook. . . According to Margaret,
she has seen a remarkable change in Andrew since his first meeting with John. "I
understand that at age 11 Andrew is still finding himself. However, he is
communicating much better and is more confident when speaking." Andrew has
even decided he wants to follow in his parents footsteps and join the military

A. You can volunteer to be a Big Brother or Sister to child in your area like Victoria did for
Sarah.
B. You can also donate funds which go to the matching process and the costs incurred
using that technology.
C. You can visit the Big Brothers Big Sisters website at www.bbbs.org to learn more.
Conclusion: Its important that we shape the images of beauty and success for ourselves in this next
generation before the media tells us what WE should be. Be a role model for someone today. When
you become a mentor, show someone theyre beautiful, inside and out!
