INTRODUCTION
This procedure is developed to cover the general requirements for Magnetic Particle
Testing services provided and carried out by T.T.Asia Co., Ltd.
1.
SCOPE
3.
ASTM - E709-95
ASNT Recommended Practice for Personnel Qualification and Certification in NonDestructive Testing No STC-TC-1A 2006.
4.
QUALIFICATION OF PERSONNEL
Personnel performing the Examination shall be qualified and certified in accordance
with ASNT Recommended Practice for Personnel Qualification and Certification in
Non-Destructive Testing No. SNT-TC-1A-2006
5.
EXAMINATION MEDIUM
Examination medium used in this procedure shall not adversely affect the integrity of
the part examined and shall be Wet Visible Black Magnetic Particles (non
fluorescent)
Dry and wet particles, including wet particle suspension vehicles, and particle
concentrations shall be in accordance with ASTM E 709-95
Particles shall be used within the temperature range limitations set by the
manufacture and the applicable specification. The temperature of the part surface
and of the suspension shall not exceed 57 0 (135F)

Generally, Wet Visible Black Magnetic Particles shall be use for examination, brand
of contrast pain/magnetic particles should be:
-
6.
Examination shall be done by the continuous method; that is, the magnetizing
current remains on while the examination medium is being applied and while excess
of the examination medium is being removed.
7.
SURFACE CONDITION
Satisfactory results are usually obtained when the surfaces are in the as - welded
conditions.
Prior to the examination, the surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within at
least 25mm shall be dry and free of all dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding flux and
spatter, oil, or other extraneous matter that could interfere with the examination.
If coatings are left on the part in the area being examined, it must be demonstrated
that indications can be detected through the existing maximum coating thickness
applied. The demonstration shall be in accordance with Appendix I of this
procedure.

CALIBRATION
The applied magnetic field shall have sufficient strength to produce satisfactory
indications.
The magnetizing power of all yokes shall be checked by their lifting power in
accordance the following requirements:
Each alternating current electromagnetic yoke shall have a lifting power at least 4.5
kg at the maximum pole spacing that will be used.
Each direct current or permanent magnetic yoke shall have a lifting power at least
18.1 kg at the maximum pole spacing that will be used.
Each weight shall be weighed with a scale from a reputable manufacturer and
stenciled with the applicable nominal weight prior to first use. A weight need only be
verified again if damaged in a manner that could have caused potential loss of
material.
Prior to use, the lifting power of electromagnetic yokes shall have been checked
within the past year.
The lifting power of permanent magnetic yokes shall be checked daily prior to use.
The lifting power of all yokes shall be checked whenever the yoke has been damaged
or repaired.
A field strength indicator shall be used to check the adequacy or direction and
strength of the magnetizing field and shall be used by positioning the indicator on the
surface to be examined. The field strength is indicated when a clearly defined line of
magnetic particles form across the face of the indicator and when the magnetic
particles are applied simultaneously with the magnetizing force. When a clearly
defined line of particle is not formed in the desired direction, the magnetizing
technique shall be changed or adjusted.

13.
DEMAGNETIZATION
Care should be exercised to ensure that the part is entirely removed from the
influenced of the AC yokes before the demagnetizing force is discontinued.
POST INSPECTION CLEANING
Post cleaning is necessary where magnetic particle materials could interfere with
subsequent processing or with service requirements. Post cleaning techniques shall
be as follows:
13.1 The drying of wet particle and subsequent removal by brushing of use of
compressed air.
13.2 Removal of wet particle by flushing with solvent.
13.3 Any other techniques which may be used if they do not interfere with subsequent
requirements
14. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
- Acceptance criteria is application follow ASME B31.1-2001
