Silk Keepsake Pouch

Pouch finishes 5-3/4 x 7-1/2

inches folded. If you have a
special Valentine card, make
your pouch to fit the card.
1. Cut a paper rectangle 171/2 x 8 inches.
2. Fold in half lengthwise.
Make a mark 1-5/8 inch
from top edge on side
edges. Draw a straight
line using a ruler or
straight edge from tip of
fold to side mark (fig. 1).
Cut to create center point
on flap. Set aside to use
after embroidery.

Dimensions are given for pouch

Pink Victorian Vine silk dupioni
(MPC)
Lining fabric (batiste, broadcloth,
or silk)
1/2-inch lace insertion for heart
(L-2/778) (MPC)
Size 100 needle for pinstitch (optional)
Wash-away or tear-away stabilizer
Mettler 60wt or 80wt white thread

Cut a piece of fabric large

enough to fit in embroidery hoop and enough
for cutting out pouch
pattern.

Press in half lengthwise to find center.

Hoop fabric with two layers of stabilizer beneath. Align crease with vertical
marks on embroidery hoop.
Center heart design and stitch out.
Change thread colors in the following
stitch order:
1 #1148 coral (heart, and pouch
edge)
2 #1236 silver (leaves)
3 #1177 avocado (vines)
4 #1148 coral (flower petals)
5 #1033 dk orchid (purple flower
petals)
6 #1124 yellow (flower centers)
Remove from hoop and remove, or wash
out stabilizer.
Before cutting out pouch, shape lace
heart using template provided. Trace
heart design provided around embroidered heart. Pin to a pinning board or
piece of cardboard. Start end of lace at
top center point of heart and pin outer
edge of lace along design line. Miter lace
at bottom point. Fold back lace end at
top point and let tails lay flat for now
(fig. 2). With tip of a needle, pull one
thread on inside header edge of lace to
draw up lace and shape it to a curve
(fig. 3). Lightly starch and press curves
with pins still sticking out of board.
Remove pins from board and pin lace
flat to fabric. Take fabric to sewing
machine and straight stitch or zigzag
along each edge with 80wt thread. Do
not worry about tails, just stitch over
them (fig. 4).
Clip tails to stitching. Turn lace heart
over and make a clip in silk between
stitching to cut down center of silk behind lace, clip curves, and spread silk
open to expose lace, and press (fig. 5).
Zigzag along miter folds and trim little
triangular miter fold from back side.
Set machine for a pinstitch (L=2.5;
W=2.0) using size 100 needle and the
80wt thread; stitch around both edges
of lace on right side.
Trim excess silk fabric to stitching on
back side to neaten up.

Place rectangle pouch pattern over lace

and embroidered heart. Center pattern
so that end of heart is 3/8 inch from
seam line at point. Cut out.
Cut out one lining piece.
Place lining to silk with right sides
together and stitch a 1/4-inch seam all
the way around leaving a 3-inch hole
for turning (fig. 6).
Turn inside out and press edge seams
well. Press under 3 inch opening and
edge stitch or zigzag closed.
Thread machine with coral embroidery
thread in top and bobbin and set for
a tight satin stitch (W=4.0) about 1/8
inch wide and stitch off edge of fabric (if
tunneling occurs, use strips of stabilizer
under work while stitching). Satin stitch
entire edge of pouch.
Fold bottom third of pouch up 5-1/2
inches and pin. Machine zigzag (L=1.0;
W=2.5) edges together using same
thread. Tack well at each end to secure
(fig. 7).
