U.S Government Against Obesity

Obesity is a serious problem that the whole world must face, including the United States.
According to Kiener (2015), Progress in combating the problem has been unacceptably slow,
according to a recent series of papers on obesity in The Lancet. Only one in four countries have
implemented a policy on healthy eating, the six-part series reports. Halting and then reversing
the obesity pandemic . . . is one of the most important challenges that must be tackled
collectively by our civilizations, said Lancet editor Richard Horton." Therefore, if the U.S.
government want to reverse the obesity problem in United States; they must intervene on eating
habits by implementing a policy on healthy nutricion.
Although the numbers of obese people are worrisome, some people think that the
government should not interfere in the free will of the population to eat as much as they want or
whatever they want. Everybody has the right to do whatever they want with their bodies. But
most people are not prepared to maturely make healthier food decisions. Not only children but
especially teenagers and adults prefer to eat unhealthy foods than the healthier ones when it is
available. Perhaps because it tastes better, or because they do not have enough time to cook or
eat in a good restaurant, so they end up eating at some fast food restaurant. In this case where
there is a lack of maturity, only government intervention would help in the fight against obesity.
The government can take several measures to fight against obesity. It is up to them to determine
what the best option for their people is.

U.S Government Against Obesity

According to House (2014), Through actions such as reducing portion sizes and limiting
the availability of high-calorie foods, MGI believes the U.K. could halt the rising trajectory and
return roughly 8.5 million overweight and obese people to a normal-weight category. If this
measures works in U.K., it should works in U.S too. By regulating portion sizes and limiting the
availability of high-calorie foods, the government will encourage a lot of people to be healthier,
because they will have less and less unhealthy food choices and will end up choosing to eat
healthy food. This action can improve the quality of life of the population and help the country to
save a large amount of money in the form of reduced health care costs and higher productivity.
Implementing an obesity-abatement program on the required scale will not be easyas
many interventions as possible should be deployed at scale and delivered effectively by the full
range of sectors in society, as said by Dobbs et al. (2014) implement a healthy nutrition policy
will not be an easy task to be fulfilled but it is an important task for the health of the population
and to the future of the nation.
