Jujitsu
KO "ancient," of olden times, or "senior"
DEN "transmission" or "tradition"
KAN "school"
DAN "sandalwood" a fragrant tree, similar to cedar
ZAN "mountain"
RYU "system", also a martial art tradition
Danzan refers to Sanadalwood Mountains, another name for Hawaiian Islands. Thus,
Danzan Ryu was the name of the style of jujitsu, which Master Okazaki developed.
Kodenkan is translated either "the school of ancient tradition" or "the school in which the
seniors transmit the tradition." Kodenkan was the name of Okazaki's school but has come
to denote both Okazaki's school in Honolulu and his system of jujitsu. Therefore, the use
of either term is acceptable to describe the art.
