INTRODUCTION
Valves specified in group 77 cover most types and sizes required for the group's field,
refinery, chemical plant and utility piping systems, coherent with 'tubulars' and 'fittings'
specified in MESC groups 74 and 76 respectively.
Valves for special applications are coded in their relevant groups, e.g.:
- group 09, wellhead valves
- group 44, valves for LPG cylinders
- group 60, solenoid valves and control valves for process instrumentation
- group 61, vacuum and pressure relief valves for tanks
- group 80, valves for sanitary requirements
- group 90, valves for laboratory use
In these groups the different types of valves are grouped together in alphabetical
order, with the main body material and end connections at sub-group level followed by
a breakdown per material type for the trim and service application at sub-sub group
level.
Valve additional requirements are presented in section 5.
They reflect latest Shell policies and piping class requirements as well as present
capabilities of valve manufacturers.
Additional requirements which were used together with locally coded (dot 9) valves
have been removed, i.e.:
- SPE 77/132 for regular/full opening swing check valves to API 6D,
- SPE 77/163 for axial disc check valves to ASME B 16.34,
- SPE 77/164 for pressure balance piston shut-off valves,
- SPE 77/210 for valves in sub-sea service.
For detailed information refer to section five - Introduction to additional requirements.
2.
VALVE SELECTION
For guidance in selecting the appropriate valves for any particular service, reference
is made to 'design and engineering practice' publications DEP 31.38.01.12-gen and
DEP 31.38.01.15-gen.
These valves are incorporated in the MESC database.
3.
VALVE TYPES
3.1
ANGLE VALVES
The application of angle type globe valves is not recommended and they have
therefore not been included as a group standard with the exception of small size
needle type globe valves for instrumentation purposes.

3.2
BALL VALVES
Ball valves are compact, have a positive shut-off and are easy to operate and
maintain. They are available as 'soft seated' and 'metal seated' valves, both with
'reduced' and 'full' bore.
A disadvantage of soft-seated ball valves is the restricted temperature rating because
of the polymers and elastomer seats and seals.
Metal-seated valves shall be used for temperature ranges exceeding the ranges
specified for soft-seated valves.
3.3
3.4
CHECK VALVES
Check valves DN40 and smaller shall be of the ball type or piston type.
Check valves DN50 and larger shall be of the swing type or dual-plate type.
3.5
3.6
3.7
PLUG VALVES
The selection and use of plug valves (i.e. pressure balanced and sleeve types)
and double plug isolation valves shall follow the requirements of the DEP manuals.

3.9
VALVE DETAILS
4.1
BY-PASSES
A by-pass, when necessary, shall be fitted locally. If valves shall be supplied complete
with by-pass this shall be clearly specified in the requisition and/or purchase order.
4.2
FLANGES
Valves shall be supplied with drilled flanges as specified in the MESC buying
descriptions.

The additional requirements (SPEs) reflect the latest Shell policy and piping-class
requirements as well as the present capabilities of manufacturers.
For valves the following categories of additional requirements (SPEs) are available:
A
Additional requirements to the 'individual' valve design codes, e.g. BS, API,
ASME.

Whenever deviated from centrally coded standard buying descriptions and/or additional
requirements, the unique (dot 1) MESC number(s) shall not be used anymore and the
Principal shall create locally coded (dot 9) MESC number(s) instead.
However, as a good policy, adherence to the available standard description is essential to
obtain the full benefits of standardisation and procurement co-ordination.
