Course Description
This course is designed for the participants to explore the background theories underpinning
the approaches and/or methods in the teaching of English, particularly English as a foreign
language (EFL). In the first part of this course the participants are to have a closer look at the
nature of Language (EFL), EFL Learning Theories, and Acquisition of English as a Foreign
Language; thus, theoretical foundations upon which these approaches are based. In the
second part of the course the participants discuss the learning of EFL (i.e. in Indonesia)
including the four-language skills and its implications in the teaching practices and the
learning process of the language.
Learning Outcomes
On the completion of this course, the participants should be able to
a. Identify, compare, and contrast characteristics and theories underpinning the
approaches used in TEFL
b. Demonstrate better understanding the theories and assumptions of a foreign
language acquisition/learning and its implications in TEFL
c. Demonstrate better understanding issues in the field of TEFL and its implications for
classroom teaching
