The Power of a Mothers Prayers

Did anyone ever predict when you were growing up that

you would never amount to anything? Did someone
thoughtlessly tell you that you would one day wind up in
jail? Perhaps you grew up in the ghetto, barrio, or the
wrong side of the tracks. Human predictions leave out
divine direction and transformation.
Predictors are not prophets. John Eric Ericksen, surgeon
to Englands Queen Victoria, predicted in 1873: The
abdomen, the chest, and the brain will be forever shut from
the intrusion of the wise and humane surgeon. Journalist,
Junius Browne predicted in 1893: Over the next century lawyers will have
diminished, and their fees will have been vastly curtailed. Computer scientist,
John Von Newmann predicted in 1949: We have reached the limits of what it
is possible to achieve with computer technology. Chairman of General Motors,
Roger Smith, unwisely predicted in 1986, By the turn of the century, we will live
in a paperless society. Bob Metcalfe predicted in InfoWorld in 1995: I predict
the internet in 1996 will catastrophically collapse. How about this one? The
teacher of Albert Einstein said in 1895, He will never amount to anything.
I thank God for my mother who, though working a full-time job, tutored me when
I missed so much school with hospitalized illness that I should have been kept
back three grades. Actually, the doctor predicted that I would die of lung disease
if my parents did not take me to a hot, dry climate. Naturally, God had other
plans in Arizona.
No one expected that the church father, Augustine, would ever be godly, much
less a history-changing theologian. His mother asked the pastor to speak with
him, and as Augustine put it, To refute my errors, to unteach me what was
evil and teach me what was good. The minister refused and said to leave him
alone: Only pray to the Lord for him. The mother was not satisfied with this,
but with tears repeatedly urged him to witness to Augustine. Though there was
some influence by the church; ultimately, the prayers of this persevering mother
paid off. The pastor eventually affirmed her, It is impossible that the son of
these tears should perish. Plead for that child based on the Father-heart of
mercy. Dont give up. Dont give out. Dont give in. Thank God for mothers who
love the Lord and their children.
Many of you have been praying for that special person who directs our Preschool
Ministry. It is a huge responsibility. We are grateful for Beverly Burgoyne's 20
years of service and we will say goodbye to her after Vacation Bible School in
June, as she and Paul prepare for a new life. Miraculously, the Lord has led our
staff and Personnel Committee to a wonderfully winsome, experienced, and
qualified director. We will share more information next weekend about the inview-of-a-call process. Happy Mothers Day!

*There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and
Sunday morning 11:00am worship services. Pastor would love to meet you!

PRC, and return it to the Commons on the weekend of May 21/22. For further
information, please email dlapp@prcnaples.org or call 239-513-9775. You can
also go online at www.supportprc.org to make a donation.
