What Is The: Purpose of A Cover Letter?
There is no such thing as a form cover letter. Each letter you write should be unique and tar-
geted to a specific employer and position.
The employer does not expect you to repeat your rsum in your cover letter. They already
have your rsum! The cover letter is a place for you to expand on and high- light the great ex-
periences you have had that are relavent to the job. One or two of your most
immpressive examples will suffice.
Your cover letter also allows the employer to gage your writing skills. Take time with your cover
letter! Have at least two people proof-read the document before you send it in.

Dear Mr. Newkirk:
I read your companys description on your website and would like to inquire about internship opportunities in
your nonprofit management program. I want to work in the community and would like to stay in the state of
Indiana and believe my interests and education will prove beneficial to the foundation in an internship capacity.
I shall receive my Master in Public Affairs with concentrations in Nonprofit Management and Policy Analysis
this coming May. My interest in nonprofits began as an undergraduate and developed further as I volunteered
with various non-profit organizations in the community. I feel my classroom experiences and various positions
have prepared me well for an organization such as yours.
My resume is enclosed for your consideration. My education and experiences match the qualifications you
seek in the nonprofit area. I know from customer and supervisor feedback that I have the interpersonal skills
and motivation needed to build a successful career in the nonprofit sector. Additionally, my relatively extensive
experiences give me confidence in my career direction and in my abilities to perform competently.
I know how busy you must be during this time of year, but I would appreciate a few minutes of your time. I
shall call you during the week of January 24 to discuss internship possibilities. In the meantime, if you need to
contact me, my phone number is 812-855-4848 or by email at ccandiate@indiana.edu.
Thank you very much for considering my request. I look forward to talking with you.
Sincerely,
Carl Candidate
