REG: MAHENG/2009/56446

ver the years, on this page, we have had many a reason to express our dismay,
disapproval or disappointment at the actions and in some cases, inaction of
the official machinery, that have had an adverse impact on the process and
commerce of filmmaking.
The lack of incentives and tax relief in virtually every annual Budget, the frequent
unreasonable and arbitrary diktats of the CBFC, the often perplexing personnel
appointments in bodies relating to cinema, the alarming tendency of state governments
to impose bans on certain films despite them being cleared for exhibition by the
censors unfortunately, it is virtually a given that if a governmental measure features
on this page, then good news is unlikely to be on offer. Indeed, just last week, this note
expressed our anguish at the imposition of the Swachch Bharat Cess that has a direct
impact on our costs and profits (Pay Dirt, issue dated November 21, 2015).
However, for criticism or disapproval to carry any credibility and authority, it must be
accompanied by an equally vocal willingness to convey our appreciation and approval
when things, for a change, do move in the right direction and are likely to be beneficial.
We must, therefore, all commend and welcome the recently announced initiative by
the Information & Broadcasting Ministry of setting up the Film Facilitation Office (FFO)
that is envisaged to be the nodal agency providing single-window clearances to feature
and non-feature filmmakers as also those involved in making television software and
ad films both here and from abroad.
It is a sad irony that while our finished products feature films are much loved and
avidly followed by the countrys populace, the process of their production is very often
a nightmarish obstacle race, involving dealing with multiple levels of officialdom and
civic agencies to secure permission for film shoots. So much so that, very often, the
decision to shoot abroad is based primarily on the relative ease of filming there rather
than any narrative or aesthetic rationale for the locale.
One cannot stress enough, therefore, the enormous necessity and utility of a onestop-shop like the FFO that would hopefully act as the filmmakers ally in securing
permits and clearances from various state governments, ministries and departments.
What is also encouraging is that the FFO shall operate under the aegis of the National
Film Development Corporation (NFDC), a body that in recent years has often
demonstrated that traits like receptiveness and efficiency can exist in government or
semi-government organisations.
The process of setting up the FFO is off to the right start, with the announcement
being immediately followed by a series of interactions between leading filmmakers
and senior officials from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Ministry of
Tourism, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the Ministry of Home Affairs and
the Ministry of Railways.
We hope these interactions helped the officers concerned understand the film
producing communitys requirements and pain points and that the same shall be
suitably addressed while formulating the policy directives that will govern the working of
the FFO once it becomes operational. In fact, it may be a good idea for NFDC to actively
seek further representations and recommendations by all involved in film production
perhaps by creating a dedicated section on its website where interested parties can
directly upload their suggestions so that those involved in designing the modalities of
the FFO are well aware of all the practical problems that filmmakers face.
Further, while it will be undoubtedly be a massive relief to the industry if the process
of getting permissions and clearances is centralised and expedited, it is also important
that some mechanism exists to enforce the sanctity of these permissions. All too often,
we have witnessed that despite having complied with all the red-tape that precedes a
film shoot, our schedules are still held to ransom by multiple extraneous forces usually
local hooligans who enjoy political patronage. One hopes that the avowed new thrust
to make life easier for filmmakers will also involve far greater sensitivity and prompt
responsiveness by the law and order machinery in stamping out these extortionists.
That said, full marks for launching this much-needed initiative and though its early
days yet, the atmospherics and approach seem to be on the right track. The rub, as
always, shall lie in the efficiency of execution rather than the sincerity of intention. And
truth be told, the default tendency on hearing of any measure involving the government
is to be sceptical and cynical.
However, we, the filmmaking fraternity, shouldnt allow negativity to colour our
response as that is the surest way of making it a self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead, let
us extend our wholehearted support in making this work because if the FFO does
succeed in accomplishing its stated objectives, the real beneficiary will not be NFDC
or any ministry or regime, but we ourselves.

GOLD REVIEWS

Tamasha
Banner: Nadiadwala Grandson

Entertainment
Producer: Sajid Nadiadwala
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika
Padukone, Javed Sheikh, Piyush Mishra
Writer: Imtiaz Ali
Music: AR Rahman
heres Ranbir Kapoor and theres
Deepika Padukone. Cherry
on the cake Imtiaz Ali is the
director. And, as far as expectations go,
the sky is the limit. After all, we all know
what a team like this can deliver. And
Team Tamasha has scored. Not only is
everything about this film beautiful but
Ali, who is known for making romantic
films, has given a new dimension to
romance in Tamasha.
Every time he decides to make a film,
you wonder what he has left in his quiver.
And every time he decides to make a
film, he surprises you by giving romance
a new look. As soon as the movie starts,
you fall in love with his two protagonists,
and when you walk out of the cinema,
you take both of them along with you.
Thats the best way to describe the
impact of this film on the audience. The
entire film is so real that you feel its all
unfolding around you.
The story: In the hills of Shimla, a little
boy, Ved (Ranbir Kapoor), is entranced by
an old storyteller (Piyush Mishra). Later,
as an adult, Ved meets Tara (Deepika
Padukone), a damsel in distress when
she loses her passport and money while
on vacation in Corsica, France. The two
decide not to share their real names and
identities with each other. They have a
platonic relationship and decide to never
meet again after the holiday ends.
When Tara returns home to Kolkata
in India, she realises that she is in love
with Ved. Four years down the line, Tara,
still smitten, moves to Delhi for work and
chances on meeting Ved, who is now a
dull and mediocre product manager. It
is only when Veds life intertwines with
Taras that he embarks on a journey
that unmasks his true nature. How their
relationship and Veds life evolves forms
the crux of the story.
The concept is unpretentious from the

04

word go. Who doesnt have suppressed

emotions that havent been dealt with?
Sometimes, the mere presence of
someone in your life helps you be the
person you want to be. And, sometimes,
you find yourself on a path, where you
have no control over circumstances. So,
when your emotions are usually muted
and you suddenly find yourself on the
cusp of something dramatic, everything
comes alive. You can drop your mask and
reveal your true self and be free. This is
the crux of Tamasha.
Directorially, Imtiaz Ali has made a
brilliant film with beautiful thoughts
conveyed with conviction. Imtiaz Ali once
again proves hes THE STORYTELLER.
Every single frame of this film bears his
signature style and the result is nothing
short of awesome. The songs have been
beautifully woven into the screenplay and
take the story forward while strengthening
your connect with the protagonists.
The way Ali has handled the subject
and brought it to the big screen is
stupendous. He allows each frame to
slowly sink in and the outcome is rousing.
There are some films that stay with
you hours after watching them. Others
emotionally entangle the audience in
the humblest ways. And, sometimes,
a film blends the narration with the
conviction of the storyteller to mould the
final product into perfection. Imtiaz Alis
Tamasha does just that. Take A Bow, MR
IMTIAZ ALI!!!
Although the story is simple, its the
scripting that makes the movie truly
an experience. Some may feel that too
much negativity in the lead actor could
go against the film but Ali has deliberately
avoided the tried and tested. Its a
debatable debate; every filmmaker has
his own way of narrating a story. This is
Alis way and he succeeds in striking a
chord.
The first half of the film is very
entertaining and peppered with sweet
and tender moments but the second half
is quite the reverse. But the way Ali has
handled those scenes makes them worth
watching. Many scenes, which portray
Ved and Taras emotional outbursts, are
superbly executed, especially where

Veds office life is concerned and when

Ved narrates a story to his family. Other
memorable scenes are those where
Tara asks Ved to meet and the two have
an emotional outburst. This scene is
followed by the song Agar tum saath ho.
The dialogue has been fabulously
written. Editing by Aarti Bajaj is another
USP of the film. Bajaj must have had a
tough time editing this film but shes done
a FANTASTIC job. This may not be AR
Rahmans best music but after watching
the film, you are sure that no one could
have done a better job. Cinematography
by S Ravi Varman is fabulous. He not
only beautifully captures scenic Corsica
but also the locations of Delhi.
Performance-wise, Ranbir Kapoors
character is layered and complicated yet
presented in an unpretentious manner,
and he presents it very convincingly.
Kapoor plays his part so credibly that you
forget hes anything but the character.
During his outburst, he makes you laugh
and cry at the same time. You cant
imagine anyone else essaying the role of
Ved. This is his best performance to date
and it is definitely award-worthy!
Deepika Padukone delivers another
award-winning performance, which is
another asset to the film. She not only
looks stunning but has proved yet again
that she is UNDOUBTEDLY an actor par
excellence. Javed Sheikh is fantastic.
Piyush Mishra is good. Others lend
adequate support.
Verdict: A must watch for any and
every movie-goer! If you love cinema,
Tamasha is the movie for you.

AB In Shoojits Next?

fter the success of Piku, Amitabh Bachchan was very impressed with Shoojit Sircar. He has
also done many ads with the director and has always been very fond of him. We now hear
that Sircars production house, Rising Sun Films, has signed Senior Bachchan once again. But
this time, Sircar will not direct the actor; the makers have locked a script which will be helmed by
a new director. The film is about Delhi and its lifestyle. In all probability, the film will start rolling in
February 2016. Producer Ronnie Lahiri said, We are working on three to four scripts and nothing

Srijit Mukherji To Debut

irector Srijit Mukherji is known for his content-rich films in the Bengali
film industry. The director has a lot of hit films in his kitty like Autograph,
Baishe Srabon, Hemlock Society and Chotushkone, to name a few. Mukherji
has redefined Bengali cinema as his content-rich films are just not content
heavy; they also do good business at the ticket counter! His last release
Rajkahini, which was a superhit, will now be remade in Hindi. The director
reveals, I am all set to make my debut in Hindi with Rajkahini. The film
will be produced by Shree Venkatesh Films and Vishesh Films, and will be
presented by Mahesh Bhatt himself. We are currently working on the script.
My Bengali film was based in West Bengal and Bangladesh but, for Hindi,
we are planning to change the set-up to Pakistan and India. The
film starts rolling from mid-2016. We are talking to some established
Bollywood actresses.
PS: We hear that the makers are keen on casting Vidya Balan. Its a womanoriented film and Rituparna Sengupta played the lead in the Bengali film.

SLB Assistant To Debut

ishant Chandrashekhar, who was assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali on his television show Saraswatichandra, is all set to make his
directorial debut in feature films. Chandrashekhar has directed a few television shows and is also a writer. Now, after a long stint in
the television industry, he has decided to make his first feature film. Although titled Mahatma, the film has nothing to do with Mahatma
Gandhi, and is set in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh. Its a thriller comedy.

Now PKP 3?

KSG Signs Comedy

fter the tremendous success of Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, we hear

the makers have already decided to start the third instalment
in the superhit franchise. Although the films director, Luv Ranjan, is
planning to direct another film with a big star cast, the producers are
determined to make a third instalment in the PKP franchise.

aran Singh Grover has a huge fan following among

the television audience
and the star became bigger
when he made his debut in
films with Alone opposite
Bipasha Basu. The actor
will be seen in Hate Story
3. After that bold film, the
actor has signed a comedy
film titled Three Dev directed
by Ankush Bhatt. The film is
about three gods Bramha,
Vishnu and Mahesh. Along
with Grover, the film features
Kunal Roy Kapur, Ravi
Dubey, Kay Kay Menon and
Tisca Chopra. The film will
hit cinemas mid-2016.

Guess Who?

orking in this industry is like treading on shifting sands. Neither success nor failure is here to stay. Similarly, people change
with time, and, it seems, not even the most generous person in this industry is immune to this inevitability.
So this director, known for his extremely down-to-earth nature, had tasted success earlier too but the most recent dose was so
intoxicating, it changed his perspective. After a super-successful film, he is playing hard-to-get by refusing to take phone calls and
has also announced a clutch of films with some really big stars. But get this the stars claim they have only heard a narration from
the director, nothing more. Lets wait and see how long this director feeds this fantasy image of himself!

Why the tearing hurry? Because the

Its one of the reasons hes called a

As soon as I entered Filmistan Studio,
I spotted a bunch of vanity vans and

lunch, hosted by the makers of the film,
so that the media could get a sense of
what the movie is all about.
Kumar was in great spirits. He said,

to almost 1,70,000 Indians. Since India

had a good relationship with Hussain,
India was able to bring them home. But
the story of that massive evacuation
remained largely untold!" Kumar added
that it was covered only by a couple of

newspapers while, in fact, it should form a

chapter in school textbooks.
In Airlift, Kumar plays Ranjit Katyal, a
character based on a real-life individual
currently living in Kuwait. The filmmakers
have changed the name of the character,
but Kumar said the man played an
instrumental role in helping the Indian
government safely evacuate 1,70,000
Indians. He stayed back to help, in fact,
until the last Indian evacuee had boarded
the last flight home. Airlift traces that
journey of evacuation too, from Kuwait to
Jordan, and from Jordan, home to India.
Kumar revealed, I think this piece of
history has to be in the textbooks. What
India did was hugesomething that was
unbelievable. Even commercial pilots went
into the war zone and brought people
back. Today those pilots, and those
people, are alive. This is a real story. This
story was hidden from all of us. Indias
evacuation of 1,70,000 Indians is in The
Guinness Book of World Records. It is the
biggest airlift evacuation undertaken by

any country and thats why we want to tell

this story.
Asked if he drew on any inspiration
for his role, Kumar said, I had seen in
Balraj Sahinis Waqt how a happy family is
affected by an earthquake. That film stuck
in my mind since childhood and it was my
point of reference. When the Iraqi people
attacked, they were hunting down Kuwaitis
and asking everyone, Are you Kuwaiti?
Because expats have to submit their
passports to their respective companies,
many Indians had no way of proving they
were Indian and not Kuwaiti. And, as a
result, many were killed.
Airlift is Kaurs second film after The
Lunchbox. Asked what has kept her from
choosing other projects, she revealed,
I was away for half a year, shooting
(the American TV series) Homelandin
the United States. After I came back
sometimes it just happens that you are
waiting to start work but the script doesnt
come at the right time, and what you
like doesnt take off at the right time. So
it is just a matter of chance that I had a
two-year gap. When I heard about Airlift, I
knew I had to do this film. I was not aware
of this story at all. Our director Raja Menon
told us about it. All the research was
available through Raja, whose uncle was
in Kuwait, at the time of the evacuation.
On working with Kumar after having
worked with Irrfan, Kaur said, Actually, I
never worked with Irrfan; we didnt have
any scenes together (in The Lunchbox).
So, logically, I have only worked with
Akshay Kumar. In fact, I was very
intimidated before meeting him. He is
a huge star Kumar cuts in to say,
Bol do bachpan se dekh rahi ho, and
Kaur adds, During our school and
college days, there was always this one
GK question asked about Bollywood
What is Akshay Kumars original name?

Those are the memories I have of you

during my childhood. I have watched so
many of his films. In fact, I was waiting to
see him doing some action on the sets,
but there is no out-and-out action in this
film. But I have had the most amazing
time with him.

Speaking of the plot, Kaur revealed,

Its a dramatic film. It is about the trials
and tribulations these people had to
face. This man did not come up with
a plan in one go. There were a lot of
disappointments, a lot of back and forth.
Asked where songs fit in, in such a
serious film, Kumar added, The song
we are shooting currently is a party song.
In real life, that man was partying the
night before Saddams army invaded
Kuwait. So this song happens before the
drama begins. All credit goes to Bhushan
Kumar, who has created some brilliant
music for the film.
Airlift is slated for release around
Republic Day. Since Bollywoods
Khans are known to have Eid, Diwali
and Christmas sort of reserved for
their releases, we asked Kumar if he
wanted to become the Republic Day
star. Dates bache toh hum le na
do saal pehle se book ho jaati hai
dates. And I release after every three
months, he replied.
Produced by T-Series, Abundantia,
Cape of Good Films and Emmay
Entertainment, Airlift is directed by Raja
Krishna Menon. The film is slated for
release on January 22, 2016.

Thrills & Spills

Director Vishal Pandya and lead actors Sharman Joshi, Zarine Khan and Karan
Singh Grover of Hate Story 3 in conversation with Team Box Office India
Vishal Pandya (VP): Let me start by
asking each of you, was this role difficult
for you? I mean everything action,
erotic scenes and drama.
Karan Singh Grover (KSG): It was not
as difficult as I thought it would be and
that was because of you, actually. I
remember you told me dont create it in
your head; come, we will create it right
there. All I had to do was follow your
vision. That made it easier for me.
VP: That is why I asked this question, so
that you praise me. (Laughs)
KSG: (Laughs) So you knew what I
was going to say. I tell everyone what
you told me, which was, dont draw a
sketch from home and come because
if you do that, by the time you reach,
it will be permanent. If we dont like it,
we will make it there and erase it and
make another sketch. If I arrive on the
sets with a sketch that I drew at home, it
becomes a permanent marker.
VP: Zarine, what about you?
Zarine Khan (ZK): What about me?
VP: I mean, the same things especially
lovemaking scenes with two actors.
ZK: Yes, the thing is, before I could
start filming, I had a lot of reservations
about how I would go about this since

12

it was the first time I was doing it, and

I had completely no idea about this
genre. But thanks to you and thanks
to my co-actors, the whole experience
was very comfortable and there was
no awkwardness at all. Once we stared
shooting, it went very smoothly.
VP: Sharman?
Sharman Joshi (SJ): In the beginning,
you mentioned that I am very good at
drama. You said, Koi mera haath nahin
pakad pata hai drama mein. When you
said that, I thought, Lets just go with the
flow. I think it was on the second or third
day of the shoot that I understood the
nuances, that there was plenty of drama.
So the little tips and pointers you gave
me were fabulous. After a long time, I
felt I was being directed while working in
a film. I think the way you have directed
is commendable, especially at such a
young age.
VP: Thank you. I want to ask you
Sharman Apart from drama, when we
were shooting the lovemaking song, I
think you were not comfortable.
SJ: I was very comfortable. I was at
peace with it.
VP: I think you were showing that you
were okay with it but you werent.

SJ: Since I have known Zarine for a

while, there was a comfort level in terms
of what I was to play out there. Because,
after a point, we just went with the flow.
I was not uncomfortable, maybe it is just
the person that I am. You know me, I am
rather reserved, which leads people to
think, Oh, he is thinking something else
or he is nervous. Even during the shoots,
after delivering my dialogue in a scene, I
return to being quiet off camera. Its the
same during action scenes. After we do
our little number, I return to being the
person that I usually am.
Box Office India (BOI): Sharman, when
Vishal offered you the film, were you
apprehensive about taking up such a
project?
SJ: No, I had no doubts. As an actor, I
want to explore all kinds of genres. There
are a few left and hopefully I will get a
chance to work on those soon. But this
was a genre I always wanted to work on.
Offers had come by in this same space
earlier but nothing had worked out as
I always felt something was amiss. But
with this one, I felt everything was in the
right place and my instinct was to do it. I
had no second thoughts about it.

Box Office India

BOI: Vishal, coming back to Sharman,

it is very unconventional for him to be
a part of a project like this. What made
you choose him?
VP: When you have a thriller and
particularly an erotic thriller, people want
to see those actors in the films that they
have not seen in such a genre before.
Even in Hate Story and Hate Story 2,
the actors were who had never done a
film of this genre. I wanted the same
thing for Hate Story 3. In this film, we
have a fantastic story and all the three
characters that Sharman, Zarine and
Karan are playing are complex and
difficult roles. And I wanted actors who
had never done this kind of film before
and people too wanted to see them do
something they had never done before. It
was the same for Sharman.
Lately, Sharman has done comedy and
other genres. So I wanted an actor who
had not done something on the same
lines. But I also needed an actor who
was right for the role. So Sharman was
the first choice, I was a little sceptical
about asking Sharman as I thought he
might say no. I was not sure whether he
would be comfortable doing a film like
this or not. But, to be honest, when I was
writing the script, I was sure he would
suit the character and that the audience
would be shocked to see him doing
something like this. When I narrated the
script to him, he loved the story, and
thats how it happened.
BOI: What was it about the other actors
that made you cast them?
VP: Initially, I had neither Karan nor
Zarine in mind. There were a few other
actors I had in mind and I
am very happy they
said no to the film.
Some said it may
not turn out to
be a good film,

28 November 2015

Box Office India

others suggested we remove the Hate

Story tag, and some even demanded
that we delete the lovemaking scenes.
If I removed the soul of the film, what
would remain? Thank goodness they
said no and I reached out to Karan and
Zarine.
BOI: Coming to each one of you, what
made you take up this film?
KSG: I have never done a role with
negative shades before. The story is
extremely interesting and my character
plays a very central part in it. When
you have a very strong character and
a strong storyline, it becomes your film
and its your responsibility to take it
forward. Its a challenge as negative
roles are not very easy to play. But the
script by Vishal sir was fabulous. I was
offered something that I have not done
before and so I took up the film.
BOI: But werent you worried about
taking up a negative role so early in
your career?
KSG: No, as an actor, I want to do all
kinds of roles. I am looking for roles that
allow me to go into a different zone. My
character plays an important role in the
film and thats all that matters. And I
am very happy that other people are not
taking up this negative role; maybe they
are not secure in their own careers at
this stage or maybe they think they cant
pull them off. But I am determined to try
out roles that I have not done so far. This
will challenge me to bring out another
side of me.
ZK: For me, its same as Karan. I took up
this role because it was different from
what I have done so far. The characters
I have played in the film have different
shades to them. Also, the story was
really good. I did not know Vishal
very well but when we started
shooting the film, I got to know

him and he was the captain of the ship.

So we followed his vision. Another reason
I did this film was Sharman. I have
known him for a few years and when I
heard that he was featuring in the film, I
knew I had to say yes. I was not aware
of the other Hate Story instalments. I
knew T-Series was a big brand and, as
far as the cast was concerned, I knew
only about Sharman. So I was very
kicked that I would be working opposite
him.
BOI: Hate Story 2 released in 2014 and
you are releasing the third part within
a year. Was there any pressure to
complete the film within a specific time
frame?
VP: When your film does well, it makes
the producers very happy. Hate Story
was already a hit franchise and then
Hate Story 2 also did well. So you dont
have to look for a title for your film. Also,
if its a hit franchise, theres already
a buzz around the film. Thats what
happened after Hate Story 2. Bhushan
said he wanted to make a film with
me. And I was, like, which film? He
said, Hate Story 3, of course. Then we
started working on the script. We were
supposed to start in January but we
started in July.
BOI: The earlier two instalments
had one female protagonist and two
male protagonists. This time, you
tweaked it to two female and two male
protagonists.
VP: Actually, it is one female and two
male protagonists. Daisy (Shah) does
play
a very important
role in it. So we
took a year
to finish the
film.

13

@BOI
BOI: What kind of marketing strategies
are you going to use to maximise your
reach?
VP: This is an out-and-out commercial
film. It is also not only a multiplex
film but also a single screen movie. I
think more than us, this is a question
for Bhushanji because of the way he
has planned it. I have never had a fan
following before but now I do, because
of Hate Story 2. I mean, the way he has
planned it Actually I dont even know
half the things that are happening. I get
to know when I read about it. Would
you believe that people went to Pune
yesterday and I wasnt even aware of
that? But I pretend to know everything
and not act dumb so they are, like, today
is Box Office India, and I am, like, Its
today? Okay fine.
BOI: You guys have started doing city
tours. What kind of response are you
getting from live audience?
ZK: They are very kicked about the
film, especially the songs, which have
become quite a hit. The response is
fabulous; they are asking us questions
about the film, they know the story has
a kind of thrilling element and thats
what they are looking forward too.
BOI: What about you, Sharman?
SJ: The response has been amazing.
None of the films we have done so
far, except the films I have done with
Aamir, of course, has carried this kind
of excitement way before the release.
We have 10 or more days to go and
the hysteria built up three weeks ago.
Actually, with the very first trailer, it
went through the roof. It was when I
stepped out that I realise the impact it
was making. I would meet
my aunts, uncles and
friends, and sense
the excitement
among them.

14

BOI: Vishal, it is said that for a director,

his second film is the most important
film. Was there any additional pressure
regarding the response you would get?
VP: No, there is pressure for every film
that you make. So I dont agree that a
director feels additional pressure when
he is making a franchise film. You have
to give every film you make 100 per
cent. But, sure, with a franchise, you
want to make it big. I knew this film
would be big because of the producer
we have, which is Bhushan Kumar. So
all my doubts were dispelled, whether
about the production or getting good
locations or fantastic songs. When
Bhushan Kumar backs a film, you have
all your answers.
BOI: Was there any creative
involvement from T-Series?
VP: No, Bhushanji said I would handle
the shoot planning and he would handle
the music. He said, just give me the
situation and I will give you the song.
And the best thing about Bhushanji was
that I was wondering how I would
speak my mind since I was working with
Bhushanji for first time, independently.
But he knows how to work with new
directors, how to work with big directors
and
how to handle both. So
whenever songs
used to come, I
used think that,
yaar there is
no script, I
used to spend
half a day just
wondering how I
would explain that
him.
And he would
be,

like, have you listened to the song?

What do you think of it? Did you like
the lyrics? I would be, like, no, and
immediately he would be, like, okay
fine, I will change the lyrics. I think he
can sense whenever there is a problem
with a song. He has a fantastic ear for
music, yet he said, Vishal, in music,
I am 90 per cent. And I was, like,
Sir, you are 100 per cent. And he
something beautiful, he said, Vishal,
I know that I am 100 per cent but I
always leave out 10 per cent so that I
can give good music. He never, never
interferred. After the edit was complete,
he asked how it had turned out and
said he would like to see it. He did
not interfere at all. In fact, we used to
ask him when he was planning to be
present on the sets whenever we use
to shoot. He called me and the actors,
saying this was the first film where he
hadnt received any calls saying there
was a problem and something was not
happening. He was very happy with the
shoot and there was no interference.
BOI: Talking about interference Were
there any concerns with the Censor
Board about what to show and what not
to, especially with this kind of genre?

Box Office India

28 November 2015

VP: When a James Bond film suffers

a cut over a kissing scene The best
part is, we have ensured that the cuts
didnt affect the content of the movie.
Otherwise the feel of the story and
what we were trying to convey would be
lost. Whether the songs, or the scenes,
the cuts have not majorly affected the
storyline of our film. I will not say that I
have no complaints. At present, people
have only complaints, complaints and
complaints about the Censor Board.
But I have none. We had amicable
discussions with the board on our film,
and sometimes we agreed with their
views and sometimes it was the reverse.
Actually, it was more the former!
(Laughs). But yeah, it went very well.
BOI: Karan, you have a big fan
following, especially after a film like
Alone and now this one Are there any
particular genres that you want to do
that your fans would like to see you in?
KSG: I think they want to see me do
good work and thats all I keep in mind
when I choose roles doing good roles
and good films. And with Hate Story 3,
we also have a message that we want to
the audience to take back.

28 November 2015

Box Office India

BOI: Sharman, with the kind of films you

do, say 3 Idiots or Ferrari Ki Sawaari,
you have a certain fan following among
kids. While choosing Hate Story 3, did
it concern you that this film didnt cater
to that set of fans?
SJ: Every film has its type of audience
and fan following. This film is not meant
for kids, so they can stay home and
chill! (Laughs)
ZK: (Cuts in) The kids can watch it
when they grow up!
SJ: Yes, they can watch it when they
grow up.
VP: Yes, you cant watch this film with
your family but you can make a family
after watching this film! You see these
government ads which say Hum Do
Humare Do. This film can be part of the
campaign to help the government.
BOI: Everyone wants their film to do
well at the box office. How much trade
tracking do you do to help your film clock
good numbers?
SJ: I dont follow the trade at all.
ZK: I have no idea about it.
VP: I have started following it after Hate
Story 2, but when someone asks me
about it, I say, No, I dont because I
dont want to be wrong (Laughs). So, yes,
I follow the trade but dont admit it to
others.
SJ: I do the same thing.
VP: When I estimate that a particular film
will do a particular amount of business,
and then someone mentions a different
estimate, I generally keep quiet and then
understand that, yes, so much business

can be expected!
KSG: Yes, I do because, at the end of
the day, it is important for a film to make
money. I follow it to that extent.
BOI: Vishal, the second half of the year
is full of festivities and people want to
release their films during this period.
How important is it to choose a release
date at this time?
VP: Yes, it is really important. I have
started following all the release
dates, months and everything after
the release of Hate Story 2. I have
studied all the big December releases
of the last five years. So even if its
a small film, people will say that
December mein badi film aa rahi hai.
BOI: Is there anything you want
to say to the trade on what to
expect from this film?
VP: No, I think they have already
assessed it when they watched the
trailer. For those who say we dont want
to watch the film, I know they will and
those who want to watch it will do so!
In both cases, I know the film will be
watched, and I am very happy as that
would add to the collections. I am not
overconfident but positive that it will
attract movie-goers.

which was designed to encourage
dialogue between members of
the film fraternity and government
bodies, on the current challenges
faced by filmmakers in India.

fraternity and the foreign film

experts to talk about their needs
with government representatives to
create a synergy between the film
community and various authorities to
facilitate an eco-system that would be
sensitive to the needs of filmmakers
as well as the administration. It was
concluded that the FFO would adapt
the best practices already present in
India and abroad, and identify and
recommend such policy changes
at the central and state levels.
Sunil Arora said, There was a need
to conduct a well-structured workshop
between the fraternity and the central
government, various state governments
and relevant government departments.
Theoutcome of this workshop, which
is a first among many such interactive
sessions, would be to lay down the
required changes that may be done
by various ministries and government
departments, so as to develop afilm
friendlyenvironment. He further
emphasised that state initiatives need
to be synergised from the point of view
of the overall coordination mechanism.
TheNFDCwould be responsible for
holding these dialogues and the first
such workshop would be held at the
end of this year.
Day Two saw a session with the
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI),

chaired by ShharatSharma, Additional

Director General, ASI, and Nina Lath
Gupta. It was attended by prominent
filmmakers, line producers and
international delegates, who discussed
how filming at ASI sites could become
easier without impinging upon the
principal concern of the ASI, especially
with regard to protecting national
monuments from damage. The ASI
and film industry delegates also had
a discussion on the current guidelines
for filming/shooting at different heritage
sites/monuments that belong to the
ASI and the existing ground realities in
securing filming permissions at such
ASI sites.
AsShharatSharma, said, ASI
acknowledged the role that films can
play in spreading Indias historical
legacy and culture to different parts
of the world and thereby spread
the message of preservation of the
countrys national heritage. He added
that the symposium was a good
learning process for the ASI, as it
helped in knowing the problems faced
by the film industry and in turn the
filmmakers committed tohonorthe
guidelines that ASI would issue towards
the preservation of the national
monuments. Many new areas of cooperation were discussed between
the parties to further collaborate so

destination.
Sharma assured the film fraternity
that the ASI would consider some of
the key issues that filmmakers face
while shooting at ASI sites, this includes
setting up an online mechanism to
accept applications for permissions to
shoot at monuments, giving filmmakers
a three hour time slot for setting up for
sunrise and sunset shots, appointing
a liaison officer to be available with
the film unit to help implement the
permissions given.
Day Three witnessed a session with
the Ministry of Home Affairsto discuss
issues pertaining to issuance of an
exclusive visa for film shootings in India
and faster clearances and permissions
from the various competent authorities
under the aegis of the Ministry while
day four was a session with the Ministry
of Railways,represented by Narendra
A Patil, Chief PRO, to discuss existing
issues while shooting at various
locations owned by the railways and
deliberate on the possible solutions for
speedier clearances for filming.
It was suggested in the meeting that
an unused railway yard be dedicated
for film shoots across selected
geographies, which could also be
leveraged for tourism purposes. For
this, art directors, production managers
and other relevant crew would be
roped in to create such a suitable
facility. The dialogue also included
recommendations such as having
different fee structures for features,
documentaries, television shows,
regional films and other such verticals
for preserving rolling stocks from the
bygone eras for period films, exploring
the facilitation of guerilla shoots in
crowded stations amongst many other
valuable propositions.

SPOTLIGHT

Feminine Mystique
Pan Nalins upcoming Hindi film Angry Indian Goddesses is up for release. The film, which is all
about female bonding, is a rollercoaster ride with myriad emotions and many a spilled secret
as an impromptu bachelorette party gets underway. This week, the four 'Goddesses' Sandhya
Mridul, Pavleen Gujral, Rajshri Deshpande and Anushka Manchanda share their
experiences during the making of this film. Over to them:
SOUMITA SENGUPTA

Poles Apart
SANDHYA MRIDUL
ON BAGGING THE ROLE

I met Dilip (Shanker), our casting

director, at a party and I was talking to
him about the predicament of actors like
us, why we dont have women bonding
films, where do we stand in the industry.
Pan Nalin was also at the party although
we didnt meet at the time. One day,
Dilip called me and said I must meet
him. To date, I call Nalin the tirchhi topi
walen because he wears his hat at an
angle. They said they wanted to make a
film on female bonding. They didnt have
a story or a script but they worked on it.
Thats how my journey with Angry Indian
Goddesses began.

ON HER CHARACTER

I play a character called Suranjana, a

business woman. I had to do a lot of
research on mining because thats what
my work is all about. My character is of
a strict woman and a mother of a small
girl. It was quite tough for me because
neither am I a strict woman nor a mother.
So I got into the character, I studied
about mining, and everything else I had
to know. In fact, while we were shooting,
everyone else had a fun role, where they
were cracking jokes and laughing but
I had to wear a serious look. It was a
challenging role because in real life I am
not like Suranjana but yet the soul of the

character was that

of Sandhya Mridul.

ON WORKSHOP

I have been an actress for

a very long time and have worked with
many directors. But with this film, I have
experienced something totally different.
During the workshop, we were told to do
breathing exercises and we acted based on
our breath. So if I breathe in a certain way, I
was naturally getting angry; and in the other
way, I was crying. I was wondering why I was
going through all these emotions but the
director explained it was an exercise. It was
a wonderful experience.

Just Like Me
PAVLEEN GUJRAL
ON BAGGING THE ROLE

I am a model and, lately, I have been

18

working as a media consultant where I

host shows and events. One of my friends

told me about the film and suggested that

I audition for it. She said it didnt matter

Box Office India

28 November 2015

whether I
bagged
the part
or not; I
should
just try.
So I went
and it was
nothing like
an audition, it
was just
conversations. I chatted with the director,
who wanted to know something about
me as a human being. After a few days, I
learnt that I was doing the film.

ON HER CHARACTER

I play Pamela Jaswal, a character who is

pretty close to me as a person because
she is a scholar. I too have studied a
lot and have studied law and computer
engineering. She is the most relatable
character in the film. She wears expensive
clothes, she goes to kitty parties, and she
is obsessive about looking pretty.

ON WORKSHOP

Those workshops were custom made for

us. We had a lot of exercises to do, like
meditation and yoga. We had to learn to
let go of ourselves during those sessions.

The theory behind Dilips workshops

was that we had to go through our own
personality traits and face our personal
demons so that we can work on it. Thats
why he got all of us talk about our personal
lives, our personal demons and things we
are coping with, to let the emotions out.
We also worked on character bonding.
Anushka and my character play best
friends. So the director gave us a back
story, where we have been friends since
college. So during the workshops, we
played out scenes like Anushka meeting
me for the first time in college, to see how
she would react.

Always In Turmoil
RAJSHRI DESHPANDE
ON BAGGING THE ROLE

Someone suggested that I forward

my profile to Dilip. He called me for a
meeting, we met for dinner, and our
director was also present there. We
were chatting casually but there was
this guy with a camera who was also
shooting us. Prior to this meeting, I
had filled out a form at their office
which required me to write about
my personal life. So Dilip asked me
about my travelling experiences
rather than my acting experiences. He
was more interested in my personal
life experiences. As that was more
important to them. And then, just like
that, they told me I was doing the film.

ON HER CHARACTER

I play a character called Lakshmi. She

is nothing like me but the character
has traits which are very relatable to
a woman of today. Somewhere, all of
us experience the same emotions. My
character is very reserved about her
internal journey. Lakshmi is in constant
struggle. But she is also fun and the
coolest person I have ever known.

ON WORKSHOP

Nalin used to give us homework, lots of

homework. For instance once we all had to
go out for dinner while in character. With
Sarah (Jane Dias) and I play childhood
friends, so we had to go back 15 years

and
behave
like 16-year-olds would during the
workshop. I didnt know Sarah at all, so
we developed a bond, we discussed
our respective childhoods, about how
we were and how we could create some
chemistry between us. Some scenes had
no dialogue and we communicated only
with our eyes.

On Song
ANUSHKA MANCHANDA
ON BAGGING THE ROLE

A friend told me Pan Nalin

had called me for
an audition.
I was, like,
Who is Pan
Nalin? And
what was I
supposed to
do? When he
told me who
Pan was, I said
why would I meet
him? But I went

28 November 2015

Box Office India

anyway and we chatted. The script

demanded a musician and thats how I
bagged the role.

ON HER CHAR ACTER

Mine was the easiest character to play

as I am a singer in the film. I didnt
have to do any research. They made
us write our characters ourselves. The
writer and the director met us, they
understood us, they got the vibe from
us and then sketched our characters.
My character is kind of a rebel, she is
aggressive and speaks her mind.

ON WORKSHOP

In our workshops, we were taught

not to act but simply react while
being in character. They put us
through various situations and we
had to react accordingly, just as
a common man would react to a
certain situation. Our workshops
helped us bond on a personal level
which is reflected on the screen.
Thats why, when you watch the
film, you will notice a lot of great
chemistry between us. Its due to the
workshops, which lasted 10-12 days.

MARKET RECAP
A LOOK AT LATIN AMERICAS EXHIBITION
MARKET IN 2015
Part II: Mexico & South America
By Daniel Loria

Barco Escape uses multiple

projectors and screens to create
a panoramic viewing experience.

n The big news from Mexico continues to occur overseas. 2015 will be
looked back upon as a key year for the international expansion of Cinpolis;
the Mexican exhibitor extended its reach in the United States while looking to surpass 400 screens in India by 2017 and strengthening its reach in
Central and South America. The companys biggest headline, however, was
the acquisition of Spains Cines Yelmo, marking the companys arrival in
Europe.
Back in domestic territory, the Mexican box office enjoyed another
strong year led primarily by family-focused titles like Minions ($45.7M) and
Inside Out ($31.7M) and cross-quadrant fare like Furious 7 ($51.4M) and
Avengers: Age of Ultron ($51.4M).
In September, the Cinpolis Acoxpa Mexico City location became the first
Latin American cinema to offer the immersive Barco Escape format with the
release of Foxs Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. It might very well prove to be
more than just a simple expansion for Barco Escape; Mexico has proven itself
to be a pioneer of several of todays trends in U.S. exhibition, with amenities
such as 4D, luxury seating, and cinema dining already being firmly established in the market. As weve seen with several other immersive formats, audiences best respond to innovations inside cinemas when they deliver with the
product on screen. In this context, introducing Barco Escape into the region
with a film like Foxs Maze Runner sequel, which was crafted specifically with
this format in mind, might prove to be a driving force in the expansion of the
immersive-screen concept across Latin America.
Its an up year across the board for territories covered by Ultracine, the
Argentina-based box office data tracking company that has emerged as
one of the leading sources for exhibition news in Spanish-speaking South
America. Ultracine currently provides coverage for Argentina, Bolivia,
Chile, Paraguay, and Peru and is working to expand to Brazil and Mexico
in 2016. The company saw various admissions records shattered this year
since it began collecting data in 1997, in large part thanks to the success of
UIP, the distribution outfit representing films from Universal, Paramount,

22

BXIndia_Nov28.indd 2

and others, depending on the country. The only other company that was
able to claim a significant portion of the market share was Disney, with hits
like Inside Out and Avengers: Age of Ultron, reports Ultracine Director of
Content Gabriel Giandinoto.
Minions was a force to contend with across South America, breaking
admissions records in Argentina (4.94M) and Chile (2.1M) while registering as the top grosser so far this year in Uruguay and the second biggest film
of the year in Paraguay. Fellow UIP release Furious 7 claims the top spot in
Paraguay while Avengers: Age of Ultron takes the same honor in Bolivia. The
Hollywood dominance wasnt unanimous, however, with a domestic title,
Asu Mare 2, coming in as the biggest film of the year in Peru by reaching
2.7 million admissions.
The big news of the year on the exhibition front comes from the continued expansion of regional players Cinemark and Cinpolis. They are
competing at a continental level, stresses Giandinoto, highlighting the sale
of Hoyts locations in both Argentina and Chile. The Argentine government
finally approved the deal this year, giving Cinemark control of around 45
percent of the market. A similar situation is developing in Chile, continues Giandinoto. Cinpoliss acquisition of Hoyts locations in the country
will increase its presence to around 40 percent of the market.
The growth in Latin America is reflected in the success of Ultracines
annual exhibition convention, Vista, which is preparing to celebrate its sixth
edition in Buenos Aires on November 24 and 25 of this year. The event, traditionally held in May, will be moved permanently to November beginning
in 2016. Having the event scheduled between CinemaCon and Cannes
required executives to spend too much time away from the office and
made it difficult for people wanting to make the trip down south, explains
Giandinoto. Moving the event to November solves that problem and will
allow studios to showcase films for the holiday season and their slates for
the following year. It will also create an exciting synergy with our friends at
ExpoCine in So Paulo. n

SOUND BOX

Keeping It Simple
Album: Hate Story 3
Banner: T-Series Films
Producer: Bhushan Kumar
Music Composer: Meet Bros,

Amaal Mallik, Baman

Lyrics: Kumaar, Manoj Muntashir,

Rashmi Virag, Shabbir Ahmed

Label: T-Series

hile the trailer of Hate Story

3 has already set the theme
for the soundtrack, the
composers, Meet Bros and Amaal Mallik,
have managed to squeeze in a few
different sounds. Unlike its predecessor,
the short and sweet album of four tracks
packs a mixed bag of sensuous and
melodious tracks.
Dont be surprised if Tumhe apna
banane ka reminds you of the nostalgic
feel of Tumhe apna banaane ki kasam
khayi hai from the 90s hit Sadak.
With this album opener, Amaal Mallik
includes his own musical sensibilities in
the Nadeem-Shravan-Sameer classic
song. Mallik has built his own version
by adding a few contemporary sounds
and a completely different antara. The
composition is quite simple yet engaging,
matching the standards of T-Series.
The lyrics penned by Rashmi Virag
for the antara complement the writing
of Sameer and also flow along with the
erotic theme of the film. Neeti Mohan

and Armaan Malik seamlessly emote the

feel of the song. Since the classic track
was highly addictive, the revised version
will need some heavy promotion to sit
well with listeners.
The sensuous number Tu isaq mera
starts with an interesting rap by Earl
Edgar. Straying from their regular sound
of Baby Doll, composers Meet Bros have
experimented with the fusion of Middle
East themes and club music. The song
is quite a refreshing offer from Meet Bros
and is escalated further by a perfect
rendition from Neha Kakkar. With the
instantly catchy tune and dance beats,
the song will receive a definite place on
the clubs playlists.
Wajah tum hi ho introduces new
composer Baman to the Bollywood
music scene. Without much
experimentation, the composition is
light and breezy, complementing the
romantic flavour of the song. The tune
suits the vocals of Armaan Malik, who
has effortlessly rendered this melodious
song. The simple treatment of the song
doesnt stand out and since Bollywood
is loaded with some of the best
harmonious romantic tracks, this song
doesnt impress.
After experimenting with a new tune,
the team of Meet Bros and singer Kanika
Kapoor is back for the concluding
naughty number Needein khul jaati

hain. The lyrics are quirky and it seems

lyricist Shabbir Ahmeds imagination
has run wild with this song. Although
quirky, the tone and flavor of the song
suit the theme of the film and dont seem
forced. The musical arrangement reflects
the composers trademark zest and
high-spirited tunes, which are clubbed
perfectly with the high-powered vocals
of Mika Singh and Kapoor. The basic
sound palette of the composition loosely
matches Shamshad Begum and Asha
Bhosles Kajra mohhabbat wala from
Kismat.
Verdict: The album stays true to the
films theme

Benny Dayal Turns Mentor

is interest in singing spiked

when he heard AR Rahmans
Dil se and now, nine years
later, Benny Dayal has become one
of the most sought-after singers in
Bollywood. Discovered by Rahman
himself, Dayal has crooned several
chartbusters not only for the maestro
but for several other composers as
well. From Pappu cant dance saala
to Badtameez dil, Bang bang, ABCD,
Daru desi and many more, the singer
has expanded his reach to other
languages such as Tamil, Punjabi,
Malayalam, Kannada, Bangla and
Marathi.
Although Dayal has been flooded
with film offers, he prefers not to
reveal details about them right now.
But the multi-lingual singer believes in
exploring different platforms and has
been quite active in the film space as

24

well as the non-film space. He also

has a few singles lined up for release
and is working on their music videos.
I am working on a few singles and
have explored different genres like
ballads and indie-pop mix. They are in
Hindi and Tamil. I believe that a songs
language doesnt matter. If listeners
like the music, then the song is a hit,
says Dayal.
Exploring the digital medium, Dayal
has also become part of Indias first
and one-of-its-kind singing contest,
Close-Up Websingers, whose quest is
to find Bollywoods Singing Jodi. The
contest has been initiated by the multichannel network #Fame. The Uff singer
will be mentoring the participants along
with Pritam.
The concept of this initiative is
fresh and innovative. It is not like your
regular singing reality TV show. Here,

every upcoming singer across the

world gets an opportunity to showcase
their talent on the digital platform.
They ultimately get a global reach as
the videos are promoted on social
media. In fact, most youngsters these
days upload their music videos on
YouTube, and Websinger gives them
an opportunity to be judged. Also they
get an opportunity to work with some
renowned Bollywood composers and
musicians. The hunt is divided into
five rounds and the participants will be
mentored and groomed by me, Pritam,
Raghu Dixit, Aditi Singh Sharma and
Monali Thakur, Dayal reveals.
With the concert season kicking off,
Dayal has been travelling across cities,
performing chartbusters along with his
band Funktuation.

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA
WHATS IT ALL ABOUT?
Launched in 2010, the relatively new
Cambodia Film Festival receives a
star-powered boost this year from
Hollywood star Angelina Jolie Pitt. The
actress will serve as President of the
festivals honorary committee. The
programme highlights movies made in
or about Cambodia and also features
a selection of films from the world
in diverse formats documentaries,
animation, short and long fictions. The
goal of the festival is not only to present
other cultures and exchange ideas but
also to be a crossroad for young and
more experienced film professionals to
expose their work.
CIFF has been organised by the
Cambodia Film Commission (CFC) and
the Bophana Center.

INDIAN CONNECT
In its sixth year, CIFF will screen AFAA
Film Roadshows under the category

International Film Festival and the Tokyo
International Film Festival, to develop
Asian cinema and its talent.
This year, the festival will feature

Lunchbox starring Irrfan, Nimrat Kaur
and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It is about
a lonely housewife Ila (Nimrat) who
feels neglected by her husband, and

HUNT IS OVER

Going Dutch
The Netherlands is a land of castles, windmills and medieval magic
contrasting with ultramodern architecture and a picture-postcard natural
landscape every element mouthwatering for filmmakers
Q ROHINI NAG

he Netherlands, in northwestern
Europe, is known for its flat
landscape, canals, tulip fields,
windmills and cycling routes. It has a
stunning range of film locations, from
broad beaches, extensive forests and
water to the widest variety of architecture
styles. From medieval towers, gates,
streets and castles to ultramodern
buildings and anonymous, ultramodern
cities with international appeal.
Visionary architecture, vintage-meetscontemporary fashion and interiors,
street markets selling rainbows of fresh
flowers, drinks at canal-side cafs are
all reasons to take your production to
Netherlands.
Over the ages, generations of painters
and artists have ensured that the
impressive meteorological play of water,
land and sky came to international fame
as Dutch Light. It can be admired all
year: often sharp shadows, at sunset
and sunrise, romantic deep red colours
provide great production value. The total
number of sun hours in the Netherlands
is about 1,521 per year. The peaks are in
the months of May and June, with over
12 hours of available light per day. In

28

the winter, the sun shines an average of

1.3 hours a day, which is seven hours of
available light.
The working culture in the Netherlands
is very dynamic and flexible. The country
has thousands of highly qualified,
prize-winning professionals with the
widest possible range of expertise from
location scouts, production crew, coproduction companies, casting, technical
positions, post-production, animation
and photography to low budget rental
equipment.
Throughout the Netherlands you can
find attractive, modern, well-maintained
and often freely accessible spaces like
parks, bridges, tunnels, beaches, tulip
fields, dikes, cinemas and museums,
sports fields, swimming pools, libraries
and city halls. Thanks to this finely
meshed infrastructure, all destinations
can be reached by car from Amsterdam
Schiphol airport in about two hours.
The capital Amsterdam is a
cosmopolitan city known for its world
famous museums, unique modern
architecture, the royal palace, canals,
leaning buildings, coffee shops and a
vibrant Red Light District.

Outside Amsterdam, film locations

of particular interest to filmmakers and
photographers include Rotterdam, The
Hague, Maastricht, Utrecht, Afsluitdijk,
windmills, castles, palaces, breweries
and North Sea beaches. The tulip farms
around Lisse offer spectacular, colourful
aerial shots. Amsterdam and Rotterdam
are the main production centres.
WHEN TO SHOOT?
The Netherlands has a maritime climate.
Winter (December to February) is mild
with occasional frost and snowfall. Spring
(March to May) is dry, with tulip fields
in full bloom. Summer (June to August)
is relatively mild and the best time to
film for weather. Fall (September to
November) is rainy.
FILM PRODUCTION INCENTIVES
The new Netherlands Film Production
Incentive scheme, effective since May
2014, is based on a system of cash
rebate. It aims at promoting a healthy
film production environment in the
Netherlands and is designed to reinforce
the international competitive position of
the Dutch film industry as a whole.

The Netherlands Film Fund awards

grants for production costs to films of
cultural value. These production costs
must be demonstrably spent in the
Netherlands. The applicant is legally
represented by a producer who has, as
majority producer, been responsible for
at least two film productions over the past
seven years.
If the film production applied for
is an international co-production, it
should meet the criteria of the European
Convention on Cinematographic Coproduction, or the criteria of bilateral
agreements with the Netherlands or
agreements with the Netherlands Film
Fund. The Netherlands should be one
of the countries of origin among the
co-producers. In order to ensure the
cultural objectives of the measure, a
test of qualifying characteristics will be
conducted. Applications should meet at
least three of the ten cultural criteria to
be eligible.
The production expenses that
are taken into consideration for the
calculation of the financial contribution
must be directly related to the filmmaking
process. The Incentive guidelines
indicate the specific costs that are not
considered eligible, such as internal
costs, financing costs and insurance
costs.
The amount of the grant is determined
by the production costs that are both
eligible and demonstrably spent on film
professionals or film companies based
in the Netherlands, multiplied by 30 per
cent. The maximum award is 1 million
Euro per application. The maximum
amount per year per applicant is 2 million
Euro. A grant will only be awarded if there
is a minimum of 1,00,000 Euro of eligible
production spend in the Netherlands.
