SIGGIS Cyclo Mapping tools

INTRODUCTION
SIGGIS has integrated the use of Cycloramas within
the Esri ArcGIS software. The resulting toolkit is
called Cyclo Mapping tool.
Cycloramas are 360 degree panoramic photos taken
at street-level and are created by CycloMedia
Technology BV. These photos are made available
through web services1. Many national institutes,
regional and local governments, water management
administrations and utility companies are already
using Cycloramas. All of these organisations value
the wealth of visual information. The imagery can be
used quickly and at the same time allow detailed
surveys.
The SIGGIS Cyclo Mapping tool goes even one step further. SIGGIS has integrated the
GlobeSpotter API from Cyclomedia Technology BV with the Esri ArcGIS software. Thanks to this
development you can now use the full potential of Cycloramas from within this commonly used
GIS2 platform. The software allows you to not only survey, but also measure and capture all
visible elements in the public domain, e.g.:
- frontages,
- bridges,
- trees,
... and any other point, line or surface.
With the Cyclo Mapping tools you will be able to prepare and greatly simplify your fieldwork,
thus saving on time and distances travelled.
The toolkit is available as a low-cost extension for ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 and 10 and as
standalone application based on ArcReader.
Accuracy
Flemish water distributing companies have carried out research in 2010 on the accuracy of
measurements via Cyclo Mapping tools. The research results confirm that, all while keeping in
mind some basic principles, the measurement accuracy attained is at least 10 centimetres. This
toolkit is therefore ideal for applications that involve measuring tree heights and frontages or for
making inventories of parking spaces and public parks.

FUNCTIONS
Cyclo Mapping / Cyclorama functions
Retrieving Cyclorama positions
Taking any street map, the user can request to retrieve the positions of the Cycloramas, which
typically have an intermediate distance of 5 meters.

Cyclorama locations displayed on a map.

Select two cyclorama placeholders

to view and use the corresponding
panoramic photos.

Using two panoramic photos to measure an object

Select in each photo two identical points. Next the measure tool will calculate the distance
between the two.

The window displaying the Cyclorama also allows the user to:
- Rotate the view 360
- Zoom in and out of the panoramic image
- Choose a central or panoramic perspective (ie. Fish-eye or cylindrical respectively)
- Print the picture in its original dimensions or scaled
- Save the current view or the full scale picture to a bitmap file (BMP)
- Request meta-information about the currently displayed photos

Using two panoramic photos to make an asset inventory

By selecting an identical point in both frames, the application will calculate the geo-coordinates
of the mutually selected object. The resulting point will subsequently be displayed in the map.
The coordinates (in ao WGS84, National Grid, RD and Lambert72) and corresponding attributes
are stored in a Geodatabase of your choice.

PRODUCTS & PRICING

The Cyclo Mapping tools are comprised of several applications.
The Cyclo Mapping Editor Extension is available as an extension for the Esri ArcGIS Desktop
applications ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo and ArcGIS Engine. It comes in a Viewer and Editor
version. Both versions allow the display of Cyclorama images as well as the measurement of any
visible object in the public domain. Additionally the Editor-version allows you to directly store
points, lines and polygons in x-y-z-coordinates into your Geodatabase. The visualisation of GIS
data within the Cyclorama is also possible in the Editor version.
In addition, SIGGIS offers a standalone (SA) version based on ArcReader, a free application of
Esri. The Cyclo Mapping Viewer SA provides measuring capabilities, while the Cyclo Mapping
Editor SA also allows you to define coordinates in x-y-z-coordinate terms and save these in a
standardized Access databank.

BASE SOFTWARE
ArcView, ArcEditor and ArcInfo
The Cyclo Mapping extension is available as an extension for ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 and 10. It can
be used under three license levels; ArcView, ArcEditor and ArcInfo
With ArcGIS Desktop, you can create maps and alter them. You can view spatial data and then
edit, analyse and query this data to gain an advanced perspective of how the data interrelates.
With ArcMap, a component of ArcGIS Desktop, you have the possibility to denote and display
this data in many different ways. You can generate graphics and reports to share conclusions
with other interested parties. Additionally, ArcMap has a WYSIWYG3 interface that allows map
layout adjustments. Finally, ArcGIS Desktop can integrate a wide array of data formats, such as
shape files, coverages, tables, CAD-drawings, rasters and TINs. For more information about
ArcGIS Desktop, please visit: http://www.esri.com/products/index.html#desktop_gis_panel

ArcGIS Engine
The Cyclo Mapping extension is also available for ArcGIS Engine. ArcGIS Engine is a collection of
GIS components and developer resources that can be embedded, allowing you to add dynamic
mapping and GIS capabilities to existing applications or build new custom mapping applications.
Developers use ArcGIS Engine to deploy GIS data, maps, and geoprocessing scripts in desktop or
mobile applications using application programming interfaces (APIs) for COM, .NET, Java, and
C++.
For more information, please visit http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisengine/
SIGGIS can assist your organisation with the integration of any Esri software, including ArcGIS
Engine. Please check out our company profile at the end of this document and do not hesitate to
contact us with further inquiries.

ArcReader
The Cyclo Mapping standalone is based on ArcReader, a free application of Esri, as well as on
9.3.1 and 10. ArcReader is a free, easy-to-use desktop mapping application that allows users to
view, explore and print maps and globes. Anyone with ArcReader can view high-quality
interactive maps authored by a high-level ArcGIS Desktop product and published with the ArcGIS
Publisher extension.
