What Is Toeie?
TOEIC, which stands for Test of English for International Communication, measures English
proficiency in a work-related environment at advanced and intermediate levels. It is designed
to give an accurate measurement of the English capabilities of people who do not use English
as their mother tongue. Each year there are 4 million people from more than 60 countries
taking the test for various purposes, from seeking jobs to getting promotions.
such as:
gas services
(8) Office: board meeting, committee, letters, telephone, fax, e-mail, office equipment
(9) Personnel: recruiting, hiring, retiring, salaries, promotion, job application
(10) Purchasing: shopping, ordering, supplies, shipping, invoice
(11) Travel: trains, airplanes, taxis, ferries, car rental, technical areas
To ensure that the test measures what it is supposed to in a fair, valid and reliable way, these
characteristics are common of the test items:
Vocabulary, grammar and idioms are not specifically American English.
Culture-specific and job/profession-specific situations are avoided.
Names from different countries are included.
Different English accents are used throughout the test - mainly American, British,
Canadian and Australian accents.

Question Patterns
You are asked about the speaker's occupation /job. In most of the cases, the speaker's occupation/
job is not mentioned directly; instead there are some key words that may give you a hint. Usually
there are more than one cue about the occupation / job, but the cues are just spoken once only;
therefore it is essential that you should try to identify key words that are related to a certain
specific occupation /job.
Who are they?
What is the man's job?
What is the woman's occupation?
Where does the man work?
What does the man do for a living?

Question Patterns
These questions ask you about how an action is / was performed in the conversation. To find
the correct answer, read the question carefully before listening to the conversation. Keep in
mind that the correct answer choice may be paraphrased from the original expressions in the
conversation, while the wrong choices often contain some exact words or expressions that you
have heard in the conversation. This is to test whether you understand the conversation as a
whole; therefore, it is important to practice listening to different statements that have the
same meaning.
How did the man find his place?
How did the man find his job?
How will the man get to the meeting?
How will the man receive the report?
How will the woman get the news?

Dear Peter,
I received an order from a customer for one side table even though the tables are
only built and sold in pairs. The customer is a long-time patron, and I am wondering
whether you can fulfill this request. They also have made many compliments about
the excellent way you build and design furniture. The side tables are on page 97 of
our catalogue.
Please inform me of the possibility of sending only one side table to our store. I
understand that you are very busy fulfilling other orders, but these customers are so
eager to purchase your products that they have asked us to inquire quickly.
Thank you for your consideration.

Short Talks
Questions 71-73 refer to the following weather report.
The weather outside at the moment is fantastic
with sunny skies and mild temperatures throughout
the city. However, by this evening, rain is expected
to come our way. Tomorrow, we will have beautiful
weather again. It is going to last throughout the
weekend with temperatures rising to the mid-20s
by Saturday afternoon.
Questions 74-76 referto the following talk.
Hello, everyone! We are going to have to cancel our
trip to the beachside today because of the rain we
are getting. However, we will stay here at the civic
center and have lunch. There is a food court where
you can enjoy food from all over the world on the
first floor. You may also want to check out the gift
shop and pick up some film and batteries. The bus
is expected to arrive at 2 o'clock to pick us up.
