THE TASK
Your team is to prepare the technical specifications of your companys proposal and to
demonstrate that a design based on these specifications will meet specific performance objectives
that you must articulate. These must include a sensor resolution of 31.25 mV and a received BER
that is justifiably appropriate to the task.
Group Formation
The project will be undertaken in groups of 4 students. Students may assemble themselves into
groups if they wish. Other students will be randomly allocated.
! Draft group assignments due Friday 26 September 2008
! Final group assignments posted Friday 03 October 2008
Submission Guidelines
No projects will be accepted past 21st November 2008, so you are urged to work towards the
submission date of 14th November, 2008.
The report must be submitted in soft as well as hard copy. The soft copy must be emailed to the
course tutor (mark.lessey@sta.uwi.edu), and copied to the course instructor
(kim.mallalieu@sta.uwi.edu); while the hard copy must be submitted directly to the course tutor
(Mr. Mark Lessey) or the course instructor (Dr. Mallalieu). All reports will be filtered through the
electronic plagiarism checker, Turnitin. Reports handed in by the early submission date may be
resubmitted on or before the final submission date.

Appendices of any length may be included but care must be taken that their content is useful and
relevant. Marks will be deducted for irrelevance.
The report should be structured along the following lines:
1. Introduction
A brief overview of the key processes involved in preparing analog source signals for
transmission over a digital communication system, the impact of the physical channel and
key processes involved in the recovery of analog information from such digital signals
A review of your companys vision of the project and for its implementation
2.Design
Your design must specify, at the least,
Digitization scheme(s)
Coding schemes
Key transmitter and receiver parameters
Multiplexing scheme, if applicable
Modulation scheme, if applicable
Key transmission metrics
A rich characterization of the information in each transformation from source to destination
The use of diagrams, including graphs, narrative and analysis are required. A discussion on the
manner in which your design is influenced by the characteristics of the source and of the
communication channel are expected. Justifications for all choices made are also expected.
The Discussion should include, but not be limited to, a summary of how your selections meet
your stated requirements
Concluding remarks should include a statement on the importance of the choice of transmitter
input pre-processing based on source characteristics, and the choice of transmission scheme
based available transmission media.
5. References
The project requires that you take account of a comprehensive set of authoritative sources in your
research. An example of sources that are easily available on the Net but that not acceptable are
personal sites that offer tutorials and other technology briefs.
All of your sources should be authoritative (text and reference books; websites and documents
from recognized technical bodies such as the ITU, IEEE, etc.)

All resource materials must be referenced. The Chicago style should be used for the end-of-text
list of references as well as for the in-text citations.
Assessment
Reports will be evaluated as follows:
!
A single mark will be given to the project report, based on the following assessment criteria:
Research (15)
Structure (10)
Accuracy (15)
Relevance (10)
Initiative (15)
Completeness (20)
Presentation, including language (15).
! The overall project mark given to each team member will be computed using a participation
weighting determined by team peers, as follows:
0 (no participation);
0.3 (little participation);
0.6 (some useful participation);
0.9 (consistent, productive participation with little room for improvement);
1 (exemplary participation)
NOTE: The following will not be accepted:
1. Late submissions (for any reason)
2. Plagiarism
3. Any report less than 1800 words, excluding the Appendices.
