    QUESTION-ANSWER RELATIONSHIPS (QARs)

    Question-Answer Relationships is a strategy that focuses on recognizing the
    relationship between the type of question and the place where the answer may
    be found. The QAR approach uses four types of questions: Right There, Think
    and Search, Author and You, and On My Own. Use the example below to help
    you understand how each of the above types of questions can be used.

    Roses are red


    Violets are blue
    Sugar in sweet
    And so are you
    Right There:
    The answer, usually
    something factual, can be
    found clearly stated in the
    text.
    Think and Search:
    The answer can be found in
    the text, but it may be found
    in different places; the reader
    needs to work to find and
    synthesize the answer
    Author and You:
    The answer combines the
    readers knowledge with
    information found in the text.
    This kind of response
    requires interpretation and
    synthesis skills.
