careers in the IT field with programming, networking, security, engineering, development and
management and will give youre a general idea of what kind of work they do as well as the
median annual salary and expecting job growth or decline.
Software developers are responsible for at least one million jobs in the information
technology (IT) career field. They are the creative minds that design, test, maintain and develop
computer programs. In order to develop the programs that an organization or user needs,
software developers will design the pieces of a program and how they all work together to
create a working program. Developer will also create multiple models and diagrams that assist
the programmer in writing the code for the programs. There are many different areas of
expertise for a career in software development two examples are application software
developers and system software developers. Application software developers create computer
applications like Word, PowerPoint and the likes, while system software developers are the
ones that create the systems that keep computers running. Employment in this field is expected
to grow about 17% from 2014-2024 thats an extraordinary 186,000 new jobs in 10 years time
with the median pay at about 100,000 according to Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Database Administers may use softwares made by software developers to save and
organize data. Saving and organizing data is a database admins main job, but they also make
sure the data is available to authorized users and that unauthorized users cannot access the
data. Often database admins need to maintain and update the databases in order to keep them
running as efficiently as possible while avoiding errors. An important duty of a data admin is to
make sure there is a backup of all the data they are responsible for. A bachelors degree in
management information systems is strongly recommended for anyone wanting to become
database admin. There are 120,000 jobs in this field with an median pay of $81,700 a year, and
an expected increase of 13,400 jobs by the year 2024
If you like a more hands on approach to computers, then a career as hardware engineer
may be for you. Their job is to research design develop and test computer hardware. The
engineers will need critical thinking and creativity skills to be able to make the schematics of
hardware that will be built while also overseeing the manufacturing of such hardware. They will
also need strong analytical and problem solving skills when testing the completed equipment
and make changes if they are needed. As of May 2015 computer hardware engineers average
annual wage is $111,000 with the highest ten percent earning above $165,000 dollars.
However, this field does not have as many jobs as some in the IT field and is only expected to
grow 3% in the next 8 years according to Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Computer system Analyst play an important role in helping organizations run more
efficient and effective. They utilize strong research and analytical skills to learn an organizations
IT systems and computing infrastructure. Once they learn an organizations systems and
procedures they can find new ways to improve the functionalities. They will also configure and
choose the hardware and software for the new system they are creating. After the system is
setup and tested to ensure success, computer systems analyst will need to train the end users
on how to use the new system and also write instruction manuals for the system they setup.
Any organization that will want to have their own network will need to employ a
computer network architect whose job is to design and build networks. Network architects will
usually have a bachelors degree in computer science, information systems or a similar field and
employers prefer a masters in business administration in information systems. Networks
architects will use their education organizational skills and analytical skills in order to create the
plans and layouts needed to make data networks. One important role they provide is
considering the security of the information when designing networks. They will often work with
hardware engineers to upgrade hardware when needed to support the networks they setup.
Network architects can expect to make somewhere around $100,000 a year with the highest
earning 10 percent making $155,000 or more.
Web developers is a career field that is expected to grow exponentially with a growth of
27 percent by the year 2024 that is 39,000 new jobs. Web developers can specialize in the
different aspects of designing and creating websites. Back end web developers design and
create the technical areas of a website. They do this by creating the basic framework that make
the website work correctly. Front end web developers focus on how the websites looks and
layout and functionality of the website using a variety of computer languages. Webmasters
however maintain and update the websites so that they will work properly for end users. Web
developers can expect to make on average $64,000 year with the low being $34,000 and the
high being $115,000 and up.
Information security analyst are responsible for keeping organizations networks secure.
They do this by watching out for network security breaches and investigating them. When a
security breach happens they will need to wright a report detailing the breach and the damages
caused by it. They are in charge of installing and using security software like firewalls and data
encryption programs to keep information safe. And are Also in responsible for developing the
organizations security standards and best practices. Once all the security software and
hardware is setup and working, penetration tests will need to be performed and analyzed to
determine where there are vulnerabilities in the system. Security analyst median pay as of 2015
is $90,000 per year. Their education will usually consist of a bachelors degree or more in a
computer science related field and exhibits analytical skills problem solving skills ingenuity and
be detail oriented.
Computer Programmers are the ones that make a software developers designs into a
computer program by writing in a language that a computer understands. Computer
programmers write programs in a variety of computer languages like java C# C++ and more.
They will also need to use analytical skills to read code written by other people in order to
update, fix or expand programs. They will need to have strong concertation and problem
solving skills in order to test find and fix any errors that might be preventing the program form
working right. Code libraries are something a programmer will need to be familiar with in order
to do his or hers work in a timely manner. Unfortunately, the programming career field is
expected to decline 8% by the year 2024. That is a loss of 26,500 jobs, the reason for this is
because computer programming can be done from anywhere and so many companies are
employing people from other countries with lower salarys.
The Computer and information system managers career field holds the jobs that have
the biggest salary like chief information officers (CIO) and chief technology officers (CTO).
Chief information officers make an average of $150,000 a year while chief technology officers
make the same at $150,000. These computer and information system managers use analytical
skills to analyze an organizations technology needs and try to get top executives to consider
them. They will also use their strong leadership skills to plan and instruct the installation and
maintenance of computer hardware and software as well as the work of other IT employees.
They will need decision making skills in order make decisions on projects and needs of the
department they oversee. Currently there are 348,500 jobs for computer and information
systems managers and an expected increase of 53,700 jobs by the year 2024.
Project manager are somewhat like computer and information system managers except
they are in charge of a project that the system managers have assigned to them and their
group. Project managers need to assist and have oversight in all off his teams like helping his
test team create test and analyze the data from the test. Also will need to assist the design
team and make sure they are hitting all development goals. They will need to create a timeline
of the project with the goals milestones dates and status in order to accomplish the projects
goals in a timely manner. Project managers median salary is $84,500 a year with some making
$130,000.
These are only the top ten careers in the information technology there are many more one
could choose from. Most of these careers want you to have at least a bachelors degree and
have some experience so it may take a while for someones career to really kick off depending
on the career you want. With the amount of job growth and the great median salary for all
careers this would be a great career field for anybody thinking of changing career path or
picking a career path.
